Let us look upon this Bilgewater event critically.

This is make or break for the few of us (lore enthusiasts) that remain, I feel. The Bilgewater Event has me impressed so far, admittingly the idea of map reskins does churn up some excitement. However, I caution all of you not to get swept out to sea by the flashy and masterful display of Riot's exceptionally talented art team. They are indeed proficient in most all projects they do, but not the group we should be eyeing.

This event is the first opportunity for meaningful lore interaction and progression in a long while.

Take this opportunity to look closely upon those in Riot's lore department and see what they have learned from prior events. Be quick to take notice of rewrites. Keep a close eye for character progression as opposed to character revision.

Let us see if they are truly listening.

Lore team (if you exist) I'm holding out some hope for you. Please don't disappoint us. For myself, it may likely be the last time I put much faith in League of Legends Lore.

Riot: Hey guys, did you like our event, its full of lore stuff right, and how about that map? Fans: Em no, there are still unfinished stories and some champions didnt get updated lores , only short bios. How long will this keep up? But the map was nice, but somewhat weird since we already had an ARAM map. I like the artowork you done for Bilgewater, I guess. Riot: Thats neat, its awesome that you liked our map, sorry for not talking to you all, we really do listen to you all, honest and for truly. Well see you next champion release and event, toodles. Fans: Wait what!? What about MF and Gangplanks Chapter 1 conclusion, what about the Shuriman and Freljord events having a lore conclusion for the place and champions. Riot why are you doing thi...oh look Gentlemen Gnar, thank you Riot, you awesome.

I don't care much about this event. Probably going to tell us some stuff about Bilgewater, perhaps remove and replace or change some characters. It comes with an ARAM map. Me not being into ARAM, I don't even care about that part.

In my eyes, Riot has already messed up. If they don't fix that, then I won't be able to care about their characters anymore, for I know that any of them could be removed for arbitrary reasons at any time.

Wasn't it obvious that most people will see the event in a critical way? I mean the shurima event was kind of a disaster lore wise, because all that lore got replaced by short lores, but then they didn't manage to give us the full lores

From a lore point of view, I am disappointed. It is just hard to tell the lore when you playing competitive 5v5!

When I looked at the concept arts, I was initially really excited... Then I saw someone on Pbe playing the game. It was just meh.

I want a mode where I can take my time to EXPLORE the port. I was TALK to the people. I want to see their DAILY LIVES. I want to SEE the culture. I want to walk down the bridge and interact with different NPCs. Heck, I want to borrow one of the ships and head to sea, and explore other parts of the world. I love adventures and I love exploring. I DONT want a MMRPG that make me grind in order to explore. I want to roleplay a lvl 18 champion exploring different parts of the world, kicking ass, no grind, and just talking to people, and seeing their lives.

This is a re-skin of an ARAM map. If the narrative team is involved at all, it'll be through tertiary ties at best.

Move along, because there will inevitably be nothing to see here (except, you know, more theory-bait and unexplained crap that "will be explained at a LATER DATE and by golly, it'll be SO COOL when we do it!tm").

Do me a solid and let me know when they offer material that stands on its own, and not just as a collection of jumbled theories.

I think that they wont start the lore over this event , I mean when you think about it starting the lore rework with one of the side city's is really daring if they do it. Even if its the start I don't think we will see that much into the actual lore of the story. I mean I love Bilgewater personally and think its the best city-state in all of Valoran but starting here is going to be really hard. I look foreword to see what riot will try to do with this.

We aren't done with rewrites for a long while longer, though. They can't really move on to just progression before they have laid the groundworks for everything. The event will probably be all about solidifying what the Bilgewater faction is all about and how all the characters fit into it, like how they did with Freljord. Gangplank might get significant additions to his characterization, but I doubt they'll do something as significant as Trundle, which a few people weren't happy about at the time. Some stories would be awesome, but expect a scope similar to Freljord, which was pretty great, tbh, despite what some hard-to-satisfy people would say.

I'm expecting something in the same line as the freljord and shurima updates, more cohesion between characters tied to the faction, both planky and MF have upcoming reworks coming soon too, MF's appears to be only visual, but this makes me think they want to tie them in a similar visual style to go along with the new bilgewater. This will likely also include the addition of characters who werent linked to the city directly, or the revision of characters with ties to make them more in line with their new bilgewater. So far so good really, and as long as no one gets the Rammus treatment, still waiting for that updated lore, this should be an improvement both in terms of cohesive themes and world building. Beyond that though, I dont think the lore will be getting expanded all that much, and so far previous faction reworks havent shown much in terms of binding together the world of runeterra, that is to say, if you look at reljord and shurima their updates didnt really do much to connect them to other factions beyond cameos by characters from Damacia and Noxus respectively, roles which could have been fulfilled by nameless npcs without making any actual difference. That said the updates didnt segregate the factions either, but without the institute of war tying them all together in an unifying theme all the different factions dont seem to have much connection to one another currently. At leas this indicates that they havent completely decided to abandon the lore entirely, but neither do they seem to be aiming for any depth to their lore treatment any time soon, so the update appears to be more of a visual/ thematic nature, with the lore being a side effect that while not ignored it also wont be focused on too much beyond the equivalent to flavor text to support the visual/thematic aspects. Then again thats just my, long winded, opinion, would be nice if this was the start of riot paying more attention to the lore, but while I am excited about the event and what it may bring Im not expecting too much in terms of lore focus, hope Im mistaken though.
