Let me explain to you why new Varus lore is wrong and needs to go
Since my original post got instantly removed from r/leagueoflegends i am posting this here.
As a passionate Varus player over the years i am frankly disappointed and outraged with the shananigans Riot is trying to pull with my favorite champion. Let me explain to you why exaclty that is a BAD move and needs to go point by point:
-
Let's talk about statements. If RIOT wanted to make a statement about LGBT they could have released a brand new champion that is gay from the beginning instead of Forcing such a personality trait on an already established champion. What i find most probbable is that Riot are too afraid to make such a new champion due to fear of him/her being unpoppular, thus taking the easy way out - we will just force this on some old champion, they play and own skins for him already so they can't run away. I will elaborate more below.
-
On old champions. Varus, being a part of league for the 5+ years give or take, is a champion with already established player base and identity. That being said you can already see why brushing his old self under the rug will cause a strong negative responce from players, not to mention that not-so-slight 180 degree turn of his Lore, but more on that later.

On the Lore. Bear with me this will be the longest part of the expose. So Varus' original lore stated that he was a protector of the temple containing the ancient evil (we now know as Darkin), and lived in the nearby village along with his wife and child. During a Noxian attack he made the choice to uphold his duty, whilst knowing the village stood no chance without him, for it is him who can protect the evil from coming out of it's imprisonment. He later came to regret that descision as it became clear that his wife and child had been killed by the merciless Noxians. Filled with rage he emraced the accursed evil and swore to bring retribution to the ones who wronged his wife, child, family and home. Summary: The old Varus is a man of Duty and Passion, who would stand for his responsibilities even if that means he would forsake his own interest in the process. Having been pushed to rage from the loss of his beloved family he went out to seek vengance, no matter the cost for onesself. I dare say that is a very strong personality that had been built. I daresay i fell in love with THAT Varus and that was the reason why i picked him up and struggled until i mastered him when i was a new player. Let's take the new Lore now - Two men, warriors, in love with eachother. They are nervous about how they will be accepted by the family of 1 of them. Whilst being on a home visit they get attacked by the Noxians, one of them being mortally injured, the other one decides to jump into the puddle of evil (the Darkin) where they get fused together as a whole made of 3. Yes they love eachother strongly. Yes there is drama. But not nearly as strong as it was before. (and I am not talking about their love, but about the personality) What duty are they fulfilling? What do they stand for? If you are going to say Love - Riot should have released a cupid champion from the start and hit that spot on. TL:DR: The tale of a patriarchal(wife, child) man of Duty out on a path of vengance regardless of the cost for himself is an age old - and gold - tale and fitted very well in League in the face of Varus. The new Lore is far from that and pales in comparison as they didn't actually loose their respective loved one but fused with him. I am not saying it's not a good story - it's just not HIS story and the champion we know and love.

On All the wrong reasons. As previously mentioned if Riot need to make an LGBT statement they can do that in a far better way than to erase an already strong persona in League of Legends and try to morph him into something that he wasn't created to be. And it's no mystery why they did it – they wanted to hit a certain demographic and most likely hit their pockets with the upcoming re-branding of the champion/skins. If they were so concerned about LGBT they could have made ANY of the 100s of champions that came out over the years gay, and yet they didn't, because it's not good for marketing, and money is king. It feels like Riot sat down and was like "hey we need a gay character to show diversity. Let's just change one of our character's back story COMPLETELY and make him (or rather 2/3 of him) gay! Fixed!"

For all those that would play the “homophobe” card – don't. I have nothing against homosexuals, to each his own romance and happiness. I am sure many of you, who would pull out the argument above, don't want people to Force their norms on LGBT, but since you are against Forcing people into something they clearly aren't, don't force homosexuality on other persons. In the case of Varus they forced it on a typical patriarchal man of duty, and I can't stress this enough - exactly because it is so far from the original and established Varus and is Forced is the reason why I am outraged by it and it needs to go. EDIT: I would also dislike a straight couple inside of Varus, for the same reason i dislike the current lore even if i completely do not take into account the fact that both of them are gay. It's not anywhere near the original lines of the story. There is no love and loss, there is no retribution for said loss. I never said new varus is straight up gay and that is not the issue at hand.
If you made it this far I would like to thank you and urge you to give my opinion some thought. I would also like to get a reaction out of Riot games, since it seems support are prohibited to comment on the topic at all.
Your average Varus main.
