@Anyone Who Cares Enough To Respond... What's The Best Starting Point For Me To Get Into Lore?

Impetual··6 votes·1,321 views

I really like the lore of League of Legends, and I'd like to delve into it and figure out how it works in a pretty detailed fashion.

I've run into some problems with my research when Riot seemed to retcon it's lore a few years ago. I'm trying to figure out Runeterra's modern story, and it's been pretty hard to do that. There are a LOT of gaps.

This may be a bit of a lofty goal, but I want to understand the lore of League of Legends!

Riot, I think we can all admit that the lore of "League of Legends" is in a weird and confusing state at the moment.

Riot, could you get off your freaking high horse and actual make a decision about your games lore?

Players have been given the run-around by the narrative/lore team for far too long. Please Riot, take this opportunity to be honest with us for once. What's the general direction you have planned for lore creation?

Go to your champions and find the ones with the micro lore's, not even a paragraphs length, then search their old lore, you will get a better picture then the one riot decided to take.(personal suggestion is the ascended brothers Nasus and Renekton, that is true characteristic story telling.) once you feel satisfied, hunt down the JOJ/ Journals of Justus.

Thanks for the advice! It will help alot in researching individual champion's lore.

But how do I search/find the lore of the game as a whole?

I've gotten the impression that there's been several events that have affected Runeterra over the years - What's the best way to start learning the lore/history of this world?

there isn't really an ongoing lore with a moba game like league just champion backrounds

Fair enough, there doesn't currently seem to be any moba game with an on going lore, as most of them seem to just settle with champion bios, and event lore that is few and far between.

I think there might be some value in looking at the past lore delivery models Riot used to use.

As you say "there isn't really an ongoing lore with a moba game like league", but in the past, League of Legends used to actually have consistent ongoing lore updates, they were produced through the "Journal of Justice".

The way that the "Journal of Justice" delivered lore seems to have been well received and engaging to players, while accomplishing the goal of consistent and engaging lore updates to Runeterra's lore.

The Journal of Justice seems like it was pretty successful, so why did Riot cancel it? Anyone have any Rioter quotes? Why was it cancelled?

Let's get to the bottom of this.

If you want to get a good impression for the new lore, then I'd say that the lores of MissFortune Gangplank TwistedFate Graves Kindred Kalista KarthusMordekaiser Thresh Hecarim Illaoi Poppy and Jhin(though he is still lacking the second part of his lore because of localisation issues) are up to date.

Sion Azir Xerath also have full lore pieces and it is very likely that the lores of most 6300-champs are still canon(the newest champ to ever receive a retcon was thresh and even then its debateable since his previous lore was nothing but rumors)

I'd also suggest the burning tides story and the shadow&fortune-story

Sharjo1 votes

Adding to this the next folks who are scheduled to get updated lore are Shen Diana Leona and Pantheon over the course of the next few weeks. Other champions with lore that could be considered as pretty much completely accurate right now are Aatrox Anivia Ashe Braum Gnar Heimerdinger Jinx Karma Lissandra Lucian Maokai Nunu Olaf Quinn Sejuani Trundle Tryndamere Twitch Udyr Velkoz Volibear and Zac.

Also Fiora has proper lore too, so check hers out.

GreenLore1 votes

Yeah you are right(and I totally forgot about fiora :p)

Sharjo2 votes

Well to be fair Fiora's lore came out of nowhere and nobody was expecting it, just like everything else about her rework, so it's understandable.

EDIT: I just realised, the OP is Impetual. Huh. Alright then.

And I wondered already why this all seems so familiar and why the opening post has more to do with "riot why u do this?" than the actual title...

Sharjo2 votes

Yeah I read down and was like "Hold on. Don't I know this tone from somewhere?" then proceeded to check OP's posting history and was greeted by threads and responses I know were from Impetual. I suppose I was caught off guard by the title question so I didn't read the post as diligently as I should have.

Yeah, I'll admit that most of new lore is of decent quality, but in my opinion, most of it isn't as good as the lore it's replacing.

But back to the main point: What's the best way to start learning about lore for LoL?

Dude, I'm just a guy sharing my opinion. I love League of Legends, and I'd love to post about it without people dismissing my opinions based on the fact "Impetual" is the person the posting it...like you currently seem to be trying to do by calling me out. Douche.

Seriously, you have no idea how many valid cohesive arguments I've made that have merely been dismissed as "just another Impetual post", without any substantiation.

I realize that I've made some stupid posts over the years with some pretty extreme views on lore.

Presently, I'm trying to rebound from that. I don't want to spread hate anymore. I'm trying to only post constructive threads, and not blindly hate on Riot. In my opinion, this thread fit that criteria.

This thread is constructive, as it's mainly asking Riot to provide a official source for it's games lore. We'd assume RIot would have this displayed publicly as most other game companies do so as a necessity, but Riot seems to go out of it's way to avoid provided cohesive lore.

It's been over a year since the retcon, and we don't even have an official Riot timeline for events in Runeterra. That's pretty sad.

In my opinion the, the whole point of the forum is to discuss things, and that the ideas should be judged based on merit, not the person who' posting.

That's a small part of why I did a name change. I want my posts to be viewed from the perspective of a random LoL player who has an opinion about lore.

I'd rather be a random unknown person making my opinion heard than a person who gets their threads downvoted just because of their posting history.

I want the stuff I post to be judged on it's merit, without being influenced by the Impetual is bad (regardless of what he is saying) crowd. - Seriously, look at several of my latest posts!

I've made sure that the posts I've made lately, especially under the Elmyst name have been purely constructive in nature. Yet for some reason people just want to deflect this thread into talking about my name change (an option Riot made available to everyone) instead of actually talking about something that actually affects this game.

Edit: Part of the Reason for my name change was how awesome the Forgotten Realms books have been. I've been reading them alot lately, and think Elminster and Mystra are both pretty awesome and interesting. My new username is conjuction of those two. Yep, I'm a huge D&D nerd.

I'm sure that surprises no one here on the Story/Art forums lol.

That's just my personal opinion! If you disagree with me, have the balls to actually form a cohesive argument. I wasn't trying to make jab, I was just sharing my opinion.

If you wanna have a discussion, I'm game, but you have to actually post something of substance for that to happen, otherwise, we're just talking about my opinions.

Sharjo, I'm sorry, I've never done this before, but I'm I'm calling you out. Your post totally ignored the the content of the post you were responding on and instead decided to comment on the poster of the thread, which in my opinion, shouldn't really matter. A good idea is a good idea, no matter who it comes from.

Are you willing to have a planned lore discussion with me on the forums about your views? Seriously, I'll have an open discussion with you about what I think about the state of LoL lore...but personally I think you're just another fanboy who agree's with the status quo and goes along with whatever Riot provides for you.

Despite popular opinion, challenging RIot's direction doesn't make for a worse game, it actually makes for a better game. Player feedback helps RIot develop LoL for the people that play it. Honest feedback is important, especially when it is negative.

Well here it is; I don't agree with your statement because I find the lores presented there to be far more immersive and interesting than the majority of other forms of lore that existed in the past. These lores are individually more interesting to me as a person based on the stories they tell and how they do it. I personally believe that the lore we've gotten, for how small it is and how much work still needs doing even after so long, is an incredibly positive step forward and it got me intrugied and invested in champions that I didn't give a toss about before. Thus to me these lores are better than the lore they're meant to replace.

For a specific example, Graves and TF's lore is SO much better for me personally because before, TF didn't even mention Graves, and then when Graves came out it warped perceptions of TF, making out to be a right arse hole when he was really just a smart arse. With their new lore it presents their common history and properly shows how they both screwed up, how they then came to terms with that and worked towards a new destiny.

f you wanna have a discussion, I'm game, but you have to actually post something of substance for that to happen, otherwise, we're just talking about my opinions.

That's fair. To be honest I don't spend a lot of time in the client if I'm not playing, coupled with the fact that I just enjoy getting involved in banter as I get involved in these discussions. I feel that just having a relaxing time when discussing stuff helps to get points across and fosters stronger relationships.

I called you out and that wasn't fair of me, so I'm sorry; that was shitty of me, but I'll explain why I chose to do it this way: your legacy. You've elaborated on it in another post (I still don't know why you make other posts instead of editing to add on to what you've already said) that you want a clean slate because the name impetual is tainted by the idea of spam and riot bashing, and you changing your name out of the blue screamed of trying to rebrand just to do the same old stuff again, under a different name and face. That concept in itself of rebranding to try again is fine, but there were other ways of going about it and it comes off as highly suspicious when you just do it out of the blue with no explanation. My trepidation stemmed from that. Was it right to call you out? Not necessarily, because I have the right to question about such things, but I could've done it in a less shitty manner.

Despite popular opinion, challenging RIot's direction doesn't make for a worse game, it actually makes for a better game. Player feedback helps RIot develop LoL for the people that play it. Honest feedback is important, especially when it is negative.

That's indeed true. The problem is that for you in particular, you ignore sources Riot already put out explaining their reasoning. Not agreeing with something is fine, flat out ignoring it isn't. Challenging Riot is one of the best things we as a community can do and it definetly isn't acceptable for the lore to be in the state is not, not by a long shot. The reason I'm more tolerant of things is because i'm a patient sod as well as liking what Riot's provided for us over this process. The least I can do is, given my perspective, is to try and at least speak to why things are as they are and give my own understanding of things. I'm not one to jump the gun on matters and I'd rather approach things with caution and an open mind. Is the community (and you especially) justified in being royally pissed off for all the lore changes? Absolutely. I actually like many of the changes because they've gotten me more interested in the lore than ever before. I don't call out Riot for their bullshit because I can see the evidence of what they want to do; the fact stuff like Bard: Mountain and Chronobreak existed in the first place despite those champions who they were meant for not having lore was enough for me to see that Riot DOES care and they did have things in the works. If they didn't such things wouldn't exist in any capacity and we'd just get a champion shoved out with a small paragraph and that's it.

I'm also more inclined to blame Riot's web/client engineers for the lore problems we had in late 2014 early 2015 because it's not like Narrative are involved in the nitty gritty of that tech related stuff; they just write the stories and such, but of course that's just how I see things.

I'd rather just go in to things with the expectation that there is a reason behind things and try to comprehend that, even if I don't agree with it. Getting mad about such things feels like a waste to me unless I actually have that understanding. Then I'll get pissed if I want to. As it stands nothing Riot's done lore wise has pissed me off. I've been weirded out by some of their decisions in many areas, but nothing that's made me say "OMG RIOT SUCH A SHITTY COMPANY DOESN'T KNOW THEIR OWN GAME" y'know? That's the perspective I'm running with here.

And also one more thing, I know that you have your ways around the Boards and have your reasons, but just leaving posts for days before responding isn't a great way to foster discussion. I almost didn't post this because I knew a response was probably days away and by that time I'd have forgotten about it.

Sharjo, I really appreciate your well thought out post.

Unfortunately/Fortunately, for many forum goers, is that I've kinda decided to stop posting on the forums. That's why some of my posts go unanswered for several days.

I've figured out that trying to fight Riot's Lore Retcon is a lost cause...that being said, I've definitely had a few relapses.

Honestly, I'm trying to get to to the point where these forums aren't a part of my life anymore. I know I have an unpopular opinion of Riot's decisions, but I'm tired of defending my point. I want out.

That being said, I hate the new lore direction, and personally find it quite inferior to the original one. The new lore events lack a sense of development...

Despite how well written the new lore is, there is no sense of Runeterra advancing as a world. It feels like we're getting established champions getting thrown into dramatic situations that, while pretty awesome, don't really have much global significance...(Bilgewater Lore...)

I hate to be the extremely broken record that brings up the Journal of Justice, but seriously! It was a much more enjoyable way for Riot to distribute content.

The Institute of War was a place where any random champion's could interact and where subtle political acts could spawn. It created an easy explanation for random friendships between champions and long term grudges. It made a viable reason for pretty much every champion viably to interact with one another on a somewhat consistent basis.

For some reason Riot threw that away, and has never delivered any decent explanation on why. But we'll see, Riot seems to have plans for their IP that they think will overshadow their current/only IP.

After reading your post, I think that the reason that we disagree, is that we're very different people.

I also like how the TF and Graves lore was written for the Bilgewater event. It was pretty interesting, and would have made for a good movie or book. But as lore for a game with such an expansive world...it didn't really feel to be very significant to world at large...which is a pretty big departure from how the old lore was told.

Most events within the old lore (let's take Kalamanda for example) were global events with multiple factions and their champions vying to fulfill their own goals. It made for a really interesting political setting that had a lot of subtle nuance between multiple champions. It really felt like it had a major effect on Runeterra! It actually felt like it changed the world! The Bilgewater event didn't do that. It didn't change, or develop Runeterra. It was just an awesome story about a few of Runeterra's champions having some altercations with one another...which is fine...but not much of an event. It didn't seem to change Runeterra very much, if at all. I don't see how it progressed the story of the world. It just seemed like some cool stuff that happened that didn't really matter that much.

Despite the pre-retcon lore having a lot of world significance...this, while really well written, doesn't seem to have much impact on the world. It's a fun adventure for a few people, but there isn't really reason why it should matter within the expansive world of Runeterra.

When I get interested in a fictional world, I'm the kinda guy who like to figure out everything, from the global politics to the mundane - Since the cancellation of the Journal of Justice, Riot hasn't provided that kind of lore. I can kinda understand why... maybe it's only appealing to a few lore nerds such as myself, and they're focusing on a bigger mark-share. Fair enough, you're an honest company out to make money.

It just pains me that I'm so hungry for more of the global lore RIot used to produce about Runeterra, and that Riot's seemingly decided to scrap creating a world, in favor of creating character pieces.

If you're a fan of the new lore, seriously, check out the Journal of Justice, and you'll immediately see how much better lore used to be.

Heck, as an experiment, compare how many long-term lol memes came from the Journal of Justice compared to the new lore releases.

One of my favourite skins, Sinnful Succubus Morgana, was created to reflect the fact that Morgana actually owned a bakery in the JoJ lore. Heck, back in the JoJ, Blitzcrank operated a dating service!

When's the last time anything that awesome happened post retcon? Seriously, I don't think it's possible to answer this, try as you might.

First of all, this is a discussion that's happening via a game forum. If I take a few days to respond to a thread I post...that's pretty normal. Sure, there are some people who log on to the forums every daily, and there's nothing wrong with that...but there's also nothing wrong with the people who only have time to log into the forums once every week or two. Once again, this is a forum about a video game, it doesn't take precedence over real life.

Sorry if I'm "leaving posts for days", but I have a life outside of LoL, as I'd hope that every player on this forum also possesses.

My actual life comes first for me, but it doesn't make any of my opinions any less valid, even if I only post on these forums a few times per week.

Also, I felt like I should nudge you into really digging into some of the older posts I've made. I'm not just a wild fan of the old lore obsessed with resisting change. I've made many posts that have explained my lore position in a very detailed manner. You don't sound like a player who has read those threads, yet seem to be relentlessly condemning what you perceive my opinions be, rather that what they actually are.

My view of the Riot's Lore Retcon is a lot more complicated than: good vs bad. There are some positive sides to the retcon, and there are some negative sides. While I've personally been focusing more on the negative sides in my posts, doesn't mean I'm ignorant/blind the positive the retcon brings. I just don't think it's worth it.

Is there a place to find the links to all the Lore Events in one place? Because there definitely needs to be

That seems both awesome and kinda necessary!

Riot Please: Provide Links to all of the Lore History Event Information in one place!

I believe not even Riot knows that.

There is one place that has it all, or should have, but expect half of it, to not be true since like 2014.
