What I Want From A Janna Update, From A Janna Veteran

Janna is a champion I love dearly, being the champion that's consistently been my most played for 3 out of the 5 years that I've played League. Times has changed, and now, in the visual department, and a few others, she's a bit lacking. This post won't be some short script of what's wrong with her model, but how I wish Riot will reinvent her when she does eventually receive a Visual Update. I'll mostly be talking about visuals, but I will mention some gameplay aspects, among other things.

Thematic and Character

Janna's thematic has stayed consitent throughout the lore update, despite being changed from a human to a spirit. At her core, her character is one of hope, and compassion, but also freedom, and the capriciouness of the winds. I love this personally, as it contrasts well against the other more altruistic champions in game, such as Soraka, who I feel has a more dignified and noble approach. Yet, now with her new lore, she's also a spirit worshipped by some as a goddess, and a mainstay with her lore since the beginning, is that Janna will always seem distant, even when she's right beside you. She cannot be tamed, she functions to help people, and feels compassion, but she'll let nobody use her. Despite being a goddess now, I hope that Riot keeps her more mischevious side, as she's always been somewhat playful and fun, as was depicted in her short story "Deep Breath" which I highly advise you read.

I also feel that this one short story gives such a great interpretation of how Janna should be represented. When she helps the boy, she could have done so much, having stolen money for him, or countless other things that I fail to come up with because the endless possibilities. in spite of all of this, she simply hugs the boy and tells him that everything will be okay before pulling a harmless prank on a man, it'll make sense if you read the story, for the boy's enjoyment.

A character in media I find that Janna could get a lot of inspiration from is Galadriel, from Lord of The Rings. Both are beings that have an untold amount of power at their command, yet they only act to defend and protect, and even when they do get involved it's often indirectly. With untold wisdom, they give bountiful sage advise to those who have need or would listen. Janna has watched humanity for countless centuries, she has seen the good, the bad, and the ugly, giving her a wealth of knowledge to pull from. In contrast to Galadriel, who is much more refined, Janna is more free-willed and energetic, she smiles openly and freely, and masks the wisdom she holds behind a mischevious and care free mask. Compassionate, caring, fun, yet somehow forever distant.

Visuals

Lets be real here, Janna's model is grossly outdated when compared to newer models such as Zoe. Like all champions, Janna fulfills her own visual aesthetic. Ahri fills the Kitsune "Fox Girl" slot, Ezreal fills the "Young Boy Adventurer." Janna fills in the "Elf Girl" slot. What first brought Janna to my attention was in fact her Elf aesthetic, and what actually keeps me enthralled by her. These are things that should stay with Janna: her tapered ears, windblown blonde hair, and empty blue eyes. In fact, her blonde hair I feel is quite important as she is the only blonde in the game aside from Lux and Camille, if you look it up, the great majority of League girls have dark brown/black hair.

This some concept art by Thomas Randy, aka Riot Hylia, for a Janna visual update, which is incredibly nice. The addition of the feather headpieces and the wing like design on her staff is a great nod to her new, current lore, as I've seen many Janna fans ask for some more feathers. Unfortunately, I feel that giving her to many feathers would just be a bit lazy, not to mention with Xayah and Rakan, the feather aesthetic has already been taken.

Something interesting I've seen is the request to keep Janna sexualized, and for good reason. Aside from the obvious, Janna being sexualized in fact respects her position as a goddess. Gods and goddesses alike in the real world, unless outright stated to be hideous or deformed, are often represented as the perfect aspect of beauty for that culture, and heavily sexualized. Even Artemis, the Goddess of the hunt and the most famous of the virgin goddesses, is depicted half naked or with her breast uncovered in statues and art. It would only make sense for Janna to be the picture of beauty for her people. However, my request is this; have her be a natural beauty, opting for no make up. So many girls in League wear make up, even Kai'sa, who supposedly lived in the Void, and Janna would be the great choice to step away from this. Being a somewhat nature focused deity, it would make sense for to be the picture of natural beauty.

I'd also love for Riot to take some inspiration from Reniassance art, such as Aphrodite in this picture, and how figures are often depicted in sheer, thin fabrics that they keep to cover themselves, often just draped over their body and seen blowing in a breeze.

This is just something to add to Janna's more ethereal and otherworldly nature, but perhaps have her legs fade out, starting from her knees and reaching to her toes, similar to Aurelion Sol's tail. Maybe Riot could re add her markings, as before Janna had sun-like markings on her shoulders, which, while somewhat conflicting with the natural beauty aspect, would be a nice way to further differentiate her from the rest of League girls.

Skins

When champions recieve Visual Updates, that also means their skins chan be changed greatly, such as how Crimson Akali has been changed to Infernal Akali, and how Nottingham Ezreal now depicts him as an Elf. I hope that Riot takes this chance to kind of step away from the cutsey-utsey of her normal skins, and take this chance to put more personality into them. Sacred Sword is a perfect example. Sacred Sword is perhaps, inn my own opinion, the best skin for Janna. Yes, it uses pink, and it retains depcitng her as soft, yet just in what she wears and how she wields a sword, it adds so much more strength to her, in a subtle way, that isn't seen in her other skins such as Star Guardian. Janna is a goddess, god damn it, and we need to show off her power.

Most of all, I hope they take the Tempest skin from simply being a black chroma and use to reimagine Janna in a much more morally ambiguos light, not necessarily evil, but just what would happened if Janna decided to go full throttle wind goddess on people, using the full might of her powers.

VO, Gameplay, and Extra

I'm not a game play genius, so I don't really know what to say, and personally I think gameplay wise she's fine. My one thought is that maybe they should add to her passive having her gain bonus heal and shield power based on bonus movement speed. This would reward Janna players for trying new builds, instead of the same old default support build. Of course, Riot would have to balance around this, but like I said, I'm not a gameplay genius.

Also, I do expect Janna to get a new voice over. I like her current voice actress, and if it's possible, I hope Riot can hire her again for the new lines. While I don't have an actual script to give, I hope they at least give her some more personality. Currently, she just says "for serentiy" and "by your command" very basic and empty lines of dialogue. Janna imbues a sense of care free and vibrancy, have her softly laugh to herself from time to time, and make little jokes to herself, while also expressing her compassion and love for people, yet hide kernels of wisdom between words, that give way to her true nature. Interestingly, Janna is a champion that hasnt actually killed anybody in universe, as far as we know, with the most violent thing she has ever down being "sendig squalls and storms to throw pirates and raiders off course." I'd love for her to express remorse and regret when killing somebody, such as saying "I don't want to do this" and "I'm sorry" after getting a kill.

Finally, and this is just one last little thing, but a way to honor her lore, and that she has a birdform, would be for her to change into her bird form when out of combat. This would be a purely cosmetic change, not giving any bonuses to combat.

LOL, sorry I made this post so long guys. I just care very deeply about my favorite champion, and what will happen to her when she gets her eventual update. If anybody is wondering why I didn't address her lore, it's because I think her current lore is fine, and fits her best. My only issue is that I feel that her impact isn't truly felt in Zaun, like she's there, but she's not there. Ezreal and Camille, champions from Piltover, which is directly above Zaun, and which both of these champion frequent, don't even have a single line of dialogue directed towards her.

I've removed your second image. I don't feel like that material is suitable for the boards, even as an example of renaissance art.

If you have any questions about this moderation, feel free to reach out to us in the Boards Discord.

I love Hylia's VU design, but my personal thinking was that Janna should look more... well, like a spirit. Less human. I was thinking ghost-white or pale blue skin, marked with gear designs that reflect her adapting to Zaun as people from the city pray to her. She would have shorter, more wind-blown hair. Her clothes would be pretty much made of mist, but opaque of course, and in the form of typical Zaunite dress. (Baggy pants and a [cropped?] blouse with loose sleeves, perhaps.)

Honestly, all I want from a Janna rework is a kit that blows me away like the original.

I have a feeling Janna is to the Piltover/Zaun area what Ornn, Volibear, and Anivia are to the Freljord. Aka, her sexualization is an artifact of her initial design, and if she were made today, she'd probably be designed as more of an air elemental than a scantily clad elf. That being said, I don't mind her aesthetic staying the way it is, but I'd prefer they add some flowing wind around her or something. Her model is quite rigid for a wind goddess.

I love Janna, but want higher cooldown on shield for much more bigger shields, and reworked q and e. I love that Janna VU concept picture though!

A Janna main named Please End Mee... sounds about right. Anyway, I really liked the post. I'd love to see Janna get an Ezreal update. Also, totally agreed. Tempest should basically be Black Frost Janna.

Hello fellow Janna main, I enjoyed reading your suggestions and I do feel like Zephyr could use more attention when it comes to her kit indeed.

Personally, I’d like Janna to have her hair down more but still floating and flowing. She’d look look nice in a unique, long, and diaphanous dress. However, I’m not sure what would be added to make the design distinct and unique from other characters from other games.

Ifneth10/18/2018, 1:40:20 PM3 votes

Wow. That’s dedication, my friend! I never knew Janna was playful at all. I thought she was very serious and detached, much like Soraka. Thanks for showing me that.

I’m not a fan of keeping the ‘sexy’ part of her design because it never connected to her lore. Sure you can say that she’s seen as a goddess now, but that’s a stretch based on a later coincidence. I want her dressed up in a fancy outfit like Sacred Sword Janna.

As for her VO, it would be cool to see her have ‘windy’ voice lines, where wind blows in the background, and her voice rises to a howl.

Janna (ult) “By the gale!” Janna (shielding low-health ally in combat) “The Storm guard you!” Janna (casting Ardent Censer) “The wind’s at your back!” Janna (casting Redemption) “Breathe!”

All I want is Riot to give Janna her global 5% movespeed passive back, then I'll main her again. :)

The major problem with Janna above all else is she is in terms of gameplay. I honestly feel like Janna could benefit from a small mini rework, similar to Ezreal. A champion as easy as Janna just simply shouldnt be in the game, is unfun to play against, and just offers extremely low amounts of player interaction and gameplay. More skill expression should be put in her kit in some way, shape, or form if we are seriously going to have a conversation about her. I think her base model could use a touch up in terms of visuals, but everything about the champion outside of monsoon is just not very exciting visually or gameplay wise.

I don't find Janna's blue eyes to be empty...i mean..what? What is empty? She has pupils and everything. The glow masks it fairly well is all.

As for sexualization. Janna isn't supposted to be someone who exists as a caricature of Aphrodite because "natural beauty" and stuff. She is a goddess and obviously is naturally beautiful but she shouldn't be like Ahri or MF who are purposefully in slutty poses and drawn at revealing angles to get the kids' dicks hard. It's shallow and takes away from the character.

And i do not like any "fade out" mechanic. She is still very much human in terms of who she is and what she wants to be, but not what she actually is. This would serve 0 purpose and would make it look very weird and wonky.

You seem to view her as a carefree naive moron who makes choices lightly.

If you read the original lore, you'd know that Janna is a survivor of Zaun, who suffered hunger, filth and the pollution it is under. She came out on top through her willpower and maturity. Her composure and willpower is the driving force of her inspirating power. Janna was one of the wisest, if not the wisest champion in League for her inherent human qualities that persevered after everything she saw and suffered, despite being a near-deity-like mage.

You are essentially giving suggestions that would cement her as the most stereotypical E-girl permanently by having "a person who has watched humanity for centuries" be soft, naive and borderline pathetic in judgment and conviction. I have lived for a fraction of that time, and know better than this description of hers you're giving.

By the way, her gameplay is extremely flawed. Her E and R have some severe design issues. That is coming from someone who has ~3500 games on her because she is the only champion i have ever truly fallen in love with.

Needless to say, i do not agree with your viewpoint.

That Janna concept art looks pretty good.

AugustHeatHaze10/18/2018, 3:16:14 AM1 votes

yea if you are going to make a champion sexual at least make it interesting and new... not just more impractical armor and looks that don't fit the champs stories like with kaisa, thats just pandering crap and it is SO FUICKING BORING ohhh yay tit armor wheeee same face Booooooring give me more diverse pool of ladies to pick from where they look actually unique and fit thier lore...

Evelyn can be sexy and a cool character because of her lore and its an appealing lore setup and on the other hand we have kai'sa who is sexy for no fucking reason she grew up as a child in the void how does she even know about makeup and where the fuck did she get it.

FilDaFunk10/18/2018, 3:24:31 PM1 votes

I think they should keep her focus on her utility - remove any bonus daamge from movement speed while empowering her utility.

Apparently the only role I'm "decent" at playing is support, and I've rested on playing Janna for that role. I absolutely love her character and her lore. I personally feel her icy blue eyes makes it to where she seems cold and calculated, extremely unconcerned with mortal conflicts. However, her lore makes it seem as if her almost cruel (and empty as you stated) eyes betray her character, as if she has some sort of nurturing nature in her that compels her to be understanding and considerate which isn't really shown in her gaze. I definitely see her playful character, especially because of what happened at the end of the "Deep Breathe" story. She is by far one of my favorite champions, and I definitely agree that she needs more.. updated (in a sense) skins, or at least more attention devoted to the development of her aesthetics and character. I absolutely adore the concept art by Riot Hylia, but dare I say it's almost Mercy-esc? Something about it just reminds me about the other healer. I love how you mentioned her voice lines. I think her laugh is so pure; it almost emanates innocence and mischief. She's such a "pure" type of character and I entirely agree with your suggestions on the "regretful" voice lines when she achieves a kill. However, I think instead of turning into her bird counterpart out of combat, she should have some more subtle character pieces implemented to give a nod back to the lore, so to say. Not the inclusion of more of the "bird aesthetic", but perhaps she could have an amulet or something of the sort (even a voice line, perhaps) that references her transformation.... But if we would be ok with the bird aesthetic, she could, perhaps, have a skin similar to Riot Hylia's concept in which as she backs her robes go from white to blue and she transforms into her counterpart (recall concept perhaps? And after the recall she'd revert back to her "normal" state but would leave behind little blue feathers?). I think this is a somewhat subtle nod to that side of her character without placing too many "bird" aspects on her that would make her seem part of the Xayah Rakkan vastayans. I don't know... just throwing ideas out there and sharing an opinion.

Also, in a stroke of luck, earlier this week I got a skin shard for her Sacred Sword skin (which is by far, in my opinion as well, Janna's best skin as of yet).

Janna really needs a visual update, and as an oldschool fan of her I really do adore her to play in both the pro and the casual's perspective and she's been one of the most top popular and iconic support role champions ever to surface even used in tournaments and thats a huge plus I'd say.

Now to share my opinion and perspective, she's very to the top enjoyable to play if you guys wanna give her a chance and this is all terms of the aspect from an oldschool perspective like me back during the year 2011 (before her current splashart rework end of 2014 and early 2015). To me I find her very iconic as a design on her early league days **especially, the time on her 2nd rework. and as a gamer, it's like you're playing a summon unit from Final Fantasy games and control her on many ways (think of it as like a playable Shiva) and thats one aspect I greatly admire from her as a support role.

Now about the lore though, to be honest I'm kinda a fan of both but in my perspective I kinda grew more on the old lore when she was still human and and to the many factors of how it affected the community.,the change kinda killed the anticipation in which I believe left some disappointment to players and questions unanswered **especially to people who grew attached to her core character, her design and her lore that can have it's potential but considering how there are many champions being made every season, I'd see why riot really needs to revisualizes and rework the whole environments of League of Legends. **She was used to be friends with Lux and now it's kinda gone....

Anyways, she's at best should be made beautiful, and the type of character who acts harmoniously, modestly, caring, gentle (can still act playful if she desires too), pure of heart, incorruptible and kind to all her surroundings she faces **I kinda treated her much like the anime, Belldandy and this is why I'd see how she's very difficult to build and rework as a character design. and since League of Legends is a fantasy base game, then it would still be okay and natural for her to be portrayed/conveyed as a beautiful human/ elf like appearance despite being ethereal by the concept (in which some of you guys are killing what you're trying to suggest...) pushing the boundaries of creativity, whatever RIOT's up too reworking her nowadays and besides she's one of the few early female champions so I hope when Riot's going to rework her it should be epic in some ways.

the only thing I can picture her out newly is something appealing as both her Sacred Sword Skin (in terms of her physical appearance and a rework of her outfit can be based on the 2nd Artsplash and believe me there's nothing wrong with that (I mean all female characters have been sexualized at some point and make em pretty and appealing). and this is why somehow I agree with you "Please End Mee", except we do all have our own tastes and differences, there are a lot of things to point out here and most the time I felt I have the same page with you but a bit altered.

Now if there's anything I'd like to make some suggestions for her gameplay wise, I think they can upgrade her zephyr skill to something able to hit multiple units, since that bird is often seen flying around her and the scope of the current meta around but I'm too am not a game mechanic wiz so it's up to them..also since she's very iconic with her Howling Gale (q) why not have her foes get sucked into that tornado especially when they're nearby?
