What are your biggest fears regarding your favourite champions/regions' future?

Falrein·11/12/2019, 5:32:37 PM·30 votes·20,581 views

Hi everyone! Lately, I've been thinking a lot about "what would annoy me the most regarding X or Y champ's future?", and while I thought a lot about mine, I'm wondering about other people's. Since I don't think a lot about other champions' future, I'm interested in knowing what you're the most afraid of regarding their future. Other than, you know, death for the most part!

So yeah... Tell me what, in your opinion, is the worst thing that could happen to your favourite champion? Or region, if you're more invested in regions than champions! I'll share mine below! I'll also leave a poll (a serious one, for once!)

  1. Regarding Syndra, my biggest fear is that she'll be irrelevant. She already feels irrelevant to the world around her because she hasn't done much, and I'm afraid she never will. I'm also afraid she'll become a mindless villain with no real motive, since she currently lacks a defined personality and goal.
  2. My second fear is regarding Kayle and Morgana. Both of which I dearly love, and I fear one of them will eclipse the other. While I know a lot of people think that's already the case, I don't feel like it is... yet. And again, my biggest fear is that one of them becomes irrelevant next to the other.

That's about it for me! Now tell me what's yours! I'm not saying these are rational fears or whatever, I think Riot's writers and editors are very good, but it sometimes happens that a writer's plan doesn't align with your hopes. Which is totally fine, it is their story to write, but I also think it's fine to voice aloud some fears and concerns! :p

  1. That LoL won't live long enough to tell enough stories.

  2. They will keep giving popular/favourite characters more and more lore while the others will keep with bare bones.

While some may tell me to have more faith in the lore team, all I can say is that the worst stuff happen when you expect them the least. So far the lore team has done incredible job and occasionally little "mistakes". It's up to time before they make a move with massive disappointment. Maybe they already have and I just didn't feel the impact.

I fear that Riot will forcefully add Rumble to Zaun in order to keep ignoring Bandle City as a legit Faction.

Dont get me wrong, i love Zaun, but Rumble is all about Bandle City... putting him in Zaun just because he hates Piltover would make him an Ekko 2.0 in terms of Lore.

Now that i mention it, i fear that Riot will do that with every single Yordle Champion... Sure, Poppy, Kennen, Heimerdinger and Kled make sense to be considered from their "Human" Faction... But the rest? NO, THEY DONT.

Sure, the lore of Gnar has relation to Yetis, and Yetis are from Freljord... But he doesnt feel like a champ from Freljord at all. Veigar has some story with Celestial Magic, Mordekaiser and he is evil, but you dont HAVE to add him to Targon, Noxus and or the Shadow Isles just because of that. Just because Tristana has a canon like the ones that people in Bilgewater it doesnt mean that she should be considered from that place. The same goes for Teemo, Lulu, etc.

The worst part is that it is something that Riot is ALREADY DOING. Teemo was randomly put in Zaun/Piltover in the TCG for reasons and Ziggs was in Zaun as well for random reasons, even if he was AGAINST Zaunites in the original lore.

Gee whiz, you're a regular mind-reader. Here are my two (or three) Big Worries:

  1. Karthus. I'm worried that a lore "update" will scrap the part where he wants to help and just make him a generic Spooky Evil Preacher Guy. For me, the best part of Karthus' character is the vast chasm between how much he thinks he's helping and how much he's actually helping. I don't want him to lose that depth.

  2. Rhaast. I'm worried about a potential "always evil" backstory when the dude finally gets, you know, a backstory. The point of the Darkin is that they were decent people who then became terrible, not that they were terrible people who became worse.

  3. Rhaast, Part 2. My biggest concern with Rhaast is personhood. I'll use Aatrox as an example. Aatrox is consistently referred to as a person, not a thing. A "he," not an "it." This in no way diminishes the evil of his actions, but reminds us that there's a person doing them. Rhaast, on the other hand, is mostly seen from Kayn's perspective. Kayn only knows him as a scythe. So to Kayn (and thus the reader), Rhaast is a thing, an "it". Instead of being a person trapped in a weapon, he's just a weapon. A thing that needs to be vanquished/dominated/controlled instead of a person who needs to be stopped. It's like a really, really bad take on the Venom symbiote. I don't want Riot to double down on that rhetoric, 'cause dehumanization is wrong no matter who you're doing it to.

  1. Shurima and Azir My fear is that its plot results in Sivir gaining some Mary Sue-ish powers, becoming Empress alongside Taliyah, and all the Ascended dying because of some cliche Disney thingy with "hurr durrr their time has past". Turning Azir into a tyrant just to justify Talyiah and Sivir becoming leaders, etc etc. That fear was lessened by the new Realms of Runeterra book tho, which has a story featuring Azir (Graham is as always an amazing writer and I hope that him and Anthony get to continue the Shuriman arc)
  2. Ryze being defeated by a weaker, but more popular champion just to highlight the underdog for the sake of popularity

They've messed with Taliyah so much already. They ruined her for mid lane. She just has so many bad matchups now because they gutted her waveclear. I hate playing jungle. All I want is Taliyah mid back. Every time a pro player picks her I get worried they'll nerf her again somehow.

I'm honestly dreading them ever revealing Jhin's face. I think that ruins the whole point of his character. Like, I totally have an idea of what I think he looks like, but anything they introduce would completely destroy the point of the mask. I wasn't really thinking they'd do it until they revealed Zed's face. I'm not even too attached to Zed but even then it was a complete letdown.

Don't go slapping romance on Celestial entities like Soraka Don't canonize Lulu x BS Veigar (she's too pure for that weirdo) Don't ruin Leona by giving her the Morg update special STRONG BADASS > Whiny teen angst Let Morgana be a badass again whose independent from Kayle Make Zyra have more of an effect on the area she's in

thats what i hope happens and doesn't happen

ModJikker11/12/2019, 6:13:24 PM8 votes

I don't have specific fears, but I do have a generic fear -- that Riot won't move characters forward beyond the little bit we know. They'll be willing to discuss their past, but not their future causing champions to stagnate. For example, we will probably never get to see the full attempt at a Void invasion, which stagnates the void champions and those associated with it like Kassadin and Malzahar.

I also worry that they will not want to compromise a champion's current state to bring them to a different state for example, finally crowning J4 as king, Ryze finding all the world runes, or the complete restoration of Shurima under Azir.

Lewanor11/12/2019, 5:37:50 PM7 votes

Talon is now General Du Couteau. Talon itself doesn't exist anymore.

Oh also, I'd be just disappointed if they made him into a generic assassin guy but that's not the end of the world.

Chembaron Yamada11/12/2019, 7:07:44 PM6 votes

Piltover I fear that they keep neglecting Piltover since they were throwing it together Zaun as a "dual-city" and therefore just think "Zaun and Piltover are the same thing anyway". Piltover and Zaun have very distinct designs and I hope that they will flesh out Piltover more.

Viktor He should not ignore the Glorious Evolved, the cult that formed around his philosophy. They are abusing the whole idea behind it and he should stand against them directly some day.

Honestly, I dislike the addition of "Gods" to the gameAurelionSol Ornn Not only do they feel extremely underpowered in the game, but their lore makes other champions seem weaker in comparison

Examples: Fizz trident is just Ornn ´s old fork

AurelionSol vaporizing Pantheon for fun

I still enjoy these 2 champs, but their "godlike" status overwhelms all the other champs

Leona I get they are trying to make her rivalry Diana more on the gray, and not a straight up good vs bad one. But seeing how they portray the second now, and seeing some lines of Leona new biography, I fear they are trying to transform her in a religious zealot of the Solari, for the way she wanted to kill Diana for her heresy, as her biography states. I liked her more as the virtuous and mesianic figure, that was the only voice of reason in a society of religious fanatics. But with Pantheon new biography and the part mentioned on Leona stopping him from killing some barbarians, I have some hope.

Aatrox Mordekaiser Riot barely progressing their lore at all or turning them into jobbers who can't make any progress towards their goals because if they managed to advance in any way it'd have drastic changes on the world (Unless they decided to redeem Aatrox or something idk).

I know Riot isn't as afraid to put regions into peril anymore (like they are currently with Sylas' mage rebellion in Demacia), but we're talking one guy leading a rebellion in one region vs the two I listed whose plans are either to annihilate all life or conquer the entire world, which would eventually force everyone else to postpone their story lines to deal with them.

Not to mention we have other world ending threats going on as well (the Void, for example), so these guys might have to wait a while before they can do anything significant.

That they'll unmask Jhin

The last time they unmasked someone with Zed was.. yea

Sometimes I feel like Rito unironically really hates Yordles, and Poppy being one of my favorite champions, I'm worried that her story with that hammer will never be developed, in any form or way. At least with a legendary skin and an animation... I don't know, that would make me happy. [sg-poppy]

Let's see

  1. In the last few years they changed Darkin from a race of unstoppable demon like beings to a bunch of humans with too much power, they changed Kayle and Morgana from Angels to 2 humans born from a human Ascended and most recently in a universe update they changed Vastayan to be deceded from being born of magic to "Calling upon the wisdom of their ancestors, the most enlightened mortals took the power of the spirit realm into themselves, becoming Vastayashai’rei—deathless shapechangers".

They are removing their unique races and just making them base arse humans. How long until they make Yordles just some humans where accidentally ended up in the spirit realm?

  1. They remove what makes Yordles their own personalities and beings. Making it so Heimer's genius, Poppy's heroism, Veigar's evil or Ziggs recklessness isn't because they are their own beings but because of where they live. Heimer's only a genius because he's emulating those around him because he's a Yordle and he 'copies' them. Veigar isn't evil, he only that way because he was captured by Morde. Stuff like that. They should be their own people and if anything should have influenced the regions their in not the other way around.

  2. Nami gets ignored. Plain and simple. She's has a comic and a great story, has connection to Diana in lore only and that's it. Never been in any cinematic, no connection direct to any other character or chance of meeting them. She's just there. Similar to Bard, Skarner, Rammus, their connections to the wider lore exist in very minor ways and their goals and wants can easily just be ignored because the wider stories of a Ascended ruining the world, a mage rebellion or a war between nations have far more people and characters involved. Like Skarner's entire people and race were mined by humans for their crystals which are now being used to power hextech devices, not only is that horrific but what happens when he arrives in Piltover? That's the cinematic/story I want to see.

Nekorus11/12/2019, 8:35:22 PM2 votes

theres this theory that nocturne is zed and i dont want that because i want nocturne to be his own character. his theme on the league of legends soundcloud sounds like a antihero and i like that idea for nocturne. if not then i just want him to be like fiddlesticks and have no place and just be everywhere haunting your dreams at nightNocturne . I also wish they gave him a spiky head and not a bald head like in the short story that was made for him and the 10 year anniversary art with nocturne designs.

Kenneky11/13/2019, 9:15:48 AM2 votes

The champions I like and play are either new or have already received a gameplay update or a VGU so as gameplay goes, I worry about nothing. As lore goes, one thing I fear the most is Talon being just left like that, being literally nobody in the lore. I just want him to be more than a Assassin's creed wannabe. Also other thing I fear is Lulu and again Talon not receiving Visual updates, I mostly want for that update for Talon, since he visually looks really stupid and It doesn't match the modern style of League.

FrancisMuni11/13/2019, 9:50:54 AM2 votes

I fear Skarner may be retconned into being a Voidborne, a Vastaya or some shit. It would be a stupid move, since Skarner's lore is the core of all hextech-related stuff; but it would still be far from the most idiotic decision thst Riot has made.

I trust Faux and his plans forEzreal , but I do have some concerns. The main one, and this may sound bad, but I hope his parents are dead and that he finds their bodies in a ruin somewhere, holding a family picture. I say this because an experience like this would be a major point of growth where he needs to cope with the fact that the only people who truly seemed to care about him are not alive after all, and Lux could probably help him with this. If they were alive, it would leave him where he was before because he was right and now has parents. The storytelling seems better if he has to face the trauma of losing the only people who showed him affection than if he just gets it back and everything is happy.

Riot noted during the Champ Rework vote that Shyvana was very popular and they might revisit her. I'm afraid that they'll do her like Galio, Aatrox, or Warwick and completely change the champ. Still optimistic though

immafukthemoon11/14/2019, 3:15:48 AM1 votes

They already retconned and changed so much about Mount Targon's lore and it's champions... I've made my peace with it by just combining parts of the new lore and the old lore and ignoring other parts. The thing I'm worried about though is how they would handle Leona Diana romantically. The people who worked on Diana headcanoned her as a lesbian, Ironstylus specifically. We got the Eclipse skin where the writer Jared Rosen confirmed Leona is.

Tencent kind of owns Riot and after the Blizzard fiasco with the hearthstone player I'm really worried how they will do this story if at all. Would they censor it overseas? Would they just leave it out of the game and keep it in comic's or lore. And if they DO do it, will it have a happy ending because the bury your gays trope is so overdone and awful...
