Could you please stop with all those Lores built around "VENGEANCE" ?

  • Renekton : Lore and Quotes are Based on being Mad and the fact he wants VENGEANCE against Nasus.

  • Nautilus : Is looking for VENGEANCE against the Captain who betrayed and tricked him into going into the unnatural darkness that transformed him. " I will have VENGEANCE. "

  • Kalista's Champion Title : " The Spear Of VENGEANCE " No need to go further there is too much. " We are VENGEANCE. " , " VENGEANCE is at hand. " , " Thus is our VENGEANCE exacted. "

  • Maokai : Is angry and wants VENGEANCE against the curse that took over his Forest " VENGEANCE may be hollow, but so is my trunk! " , " VENGEANCE bears the sweetest fruit. " .

  • Warwick : Wants VENGEANCE against singed and those who turned him into a monster I gess? " VENGEANCE is only a step behind you. "

  • Yorick : Wants VENGEANCE against the Ruined King for causing the Shadow Isle to be Cursed. " The Ruined King will soon meet the victims of his curse. " .

  • Pyke : Is executing his VENGEANCE against those who betrayed him ( including MissFortune, Gangplank and Kalista ) and so who are on his "List" . " Not sure whose REVENGE I'm getting... Don't care! " , " Sweet REVENGE. " and " I am not the only one who wants REVENGE on everyone. " effectively this post proves your last quote mister Pyke. ( VENGEANCE = REVENGE BTW )

  • Aatrox and Varus : Want VENGEANCE against those who trapped them their Weapons for centuries. Varus is more obvious as his Title is : " The Arrow Of Retribution " knowing that Retribution is a word close to VENGEANCE. Even in his French Title retribution is traduced into VENGEANCE. For Aatrox it's more specifically VENGEANCE against Zoe for gifting to Humans the tools to trap them ( Basically all of his Quotes to Zoe ).

  • Brand's Champion Title : " The Burning VENGEANCE " .

  • Gangplank and MissFortune : MissFortune Wants VENGEANCE against Gangplank for killing her mom and dad. Gangplank Wants VENGEANCE against MissFortune because she avenged herself on him and now he lost his boat and left arm.

These ones have their VENGEANCE side nearly only part of theit Lore and not in the overall champion design and theme aka in-game quotes and overall character atmosphere.

  • Urgot : Is looking for VENGEANCE against Swain for betraying him and leaving him to die in Zaun.

  • Lucian : is looking for VENGEANCE against Thresh for having Senna ( Lucian 's Wife ) in his lantern.

  • Tryndamere : Is looking for VENGEANCE against Aatrox for the massacre of his whole tribe. Aatrox's Quote at Tryndamere : " I wait for you, Tryndamere! Come, take your VENGEANCE! " .

  • Azir : Is looking for VENGEANCE against Xerath for betraying him and causing the destruction of Shurima.

  • Shen : Is looking for VENGEANCE against Zed for killing his father.

There might have been some champions or quotes I've missed but I think that is already enough to prove my point on the fact that there is a TOO DAMN HIGH amount of champions who are related to VENGEANCE. Maybe that's the easy way to make the lore of a champion not entirely flat that developers often use (and maybe abuse).

Just because you are adding the word "VENGEANCE" between 2 champions that dont like each doesnt meant that one of those champions actually wants Vengeance.

Renekton Renekton doesnt really wants vengeance, he is just insane and wants to die. Nautilus is not looking for vengeance anymore Yorick Wants to "cure" the Shadow Isles, not vengeance Brand This one is weird... because even if Vengeance is in his tittle, he doenst really wants vengeance, he wants magic Urgot wants anarchy and make Zaun great again Lucian wants to free the soul of Senna that is traped inside the lantern Tryndamere needs an update Azir wants to rebuild Shurima Shen wants balance

I think you are completely blind to the nuance between these characters and you're forcing a pretty vapid over-simplification of their individual motivations just to prove a point.

I mean, sure, Maokai and Yorick would like revenge, but that's not even close to their primary motivation. The main thing they want is the undoing of the Ruination (although they differ in how it should be solved; Maokai wants to restore the Isles to their former glory while Yorick believes they are beyond saving and thinks they should just be laid to rest for good). Vengeance against the Ruined King is, at best, a secondary goal.

When i think of Azir and Yorick's reasons for "vengeance", the rest just pales in comparison. one doomed an isle for what seems to be an eternity. another caused a great nation to fall! not a tribe, not a person, a whole damn nation!

Although, i think in a way this represents how vengeful people can be. its such a typical trait among...well, i wanna say among humans but look at this list!

First, using in game quotes as evidence is sketchy from my experience, although perhaps I have a bad experience with this after arguing with some one about the quality of Maokai's lore when he hadn't even read it and was only using his quotes. Secondly, there are over 140 champions, personal grudges and conflicts are going to pop up. Revenge is a very broad topic and can be explored in many different and interesting ways. Moreover, half of the characters you listed don't even want it that badly.

  • Azir, Maokai, Yorick and Shen easily have motivation as to why they should be angry and want revenge against certain people, but their main goal is to rebuild what they have lost. They may get some form of revenge in the future, but they do not actively seek it.
  • Miss Fortune and Lucian both have a strong urge for revenge which is consuming them, a personal demon they must overcome, and likely the reason they featured together in the Harrowing story (Tryndamere may be along these lines, but we will see when his lore is reworked).
  • Pyke, Varus and Kalista are examples of what happens when you are indeed consumed by vengeance. Those who want Kalista's services must pay with their soul, their vengeance costing them everything, while Pyke and Varus have both been blinded in a similar way and ended up in similarly dire situations to Kalista's customers.
  • Nautilus, Warwick, Brand, and Urgot were all victims, however to say that their characters are built around vengeance is ridiculous. Naut and Warwick are more forces of nature than people now, while Brand and Urgot seek power as a result of being exploited while having none.
  • Renekton and Aatrox are both obsessed over one thing, Renekton with his brother and Aatrox with oblivion. These are coping mechanisms for their respective torments that they have endured, and to say they just want revenge is to completely miss the point. These characters both fell from grace and are more tragic in my opinion. If I had to guess, Renekton will be saved or redeemed in some respect and Aatrox will be put out of his misery.
  • Gangplank is... well, he hasn't been featured a whole lot since he got "killed". His story more seems to explore the idea of what losing everything has done to him and how he will reclaim what he has lost. He may very well be used as a consequence of Miss Fortune's act of vengeance. But he doesn't really fit into the previous dot points, at least to me (maybe I don't understand it as much as I should).

So yeah, 17/141 champions have personal grudges and relate to revenge (very loosely in some circumstances), but to say that they have relatively flat lore because of this is far too reductive. They all have potential, and the main thing holding them back is the fact that Riot can't tell 141 stories at once.

It's a cheap and easy motivation.

Beat's Zoe's weak lore, though. She has no goals, no aspirations, and no purpose. Sure, you wouldn't expect much from a kid, but then again Nunu and Annie remain more endearing than her.

The good news is Nautilus doesn't want vengeance anymore.

The bad news is he wants taxes, so now there are even more people who could face his ship-smashing wrath.

Requiemsfire9/2/2018, 11:22:10 AM2 votes

Nautilus has been retconned Brand is now seeking the world runes solely for their power and the ability to command magic, not vengeance, Shen does not seek nor is motivated purely by revenge, he seeks to restore balance to the point where he was aided by Zed to find Jhin

I agree with a lot of the above that a lot of these are incomplete if you just boil it down to vengeance, or that they're just really not about it. I think it's also important to note that there are 140 champions, and you've listed 15 in your original list. Considering how broad vengeance is as a theme, I don't think that's quite TOO DAMN HIGH.

You forgot Brand. The fires of VENGENCE

Chembaron Yamada9/1/2018, 8:04:23 PM1 votes

How about vendetta, is vendetta ok?

You are right that we have alot of this thematic in the game. On the other hand, it is a good way to let champions interact with each other and create rivalries in the lore.

Some other backgrounds would be nice, tho. Would still enjoy some hikikomori data analyst champion from Piltover, who is working together with Caitlyn and Vi to catch criminals. But not for some noble reason or vengeance, simply because of that sweet sweet money.

SugeMinPikk9/1/2018, 8:25:24 PM1 votes

It's the low hanging fruit of backstory. You got the motivation, the villain, and the origin all wrapped up in one nice little easy to understand package.

League of Legends?

More like League of Vengeance!

That's the game's name now.

DerMangoJoghurt9/1/2018, 9:24:02 PM1 votes

Desire for vengeance is a natural consequence of a conflict that disproportionately favors one side. Look at the list you made. Every single champion lost a conflict with someone or something. It would be unnatural for those characters to not desire vengeance. It is what makes these conflicts feel real, it gives them character building consequences.

As long as vengeance isn't every characters primary motivation I don't see anything wrong with it.

I think you forgot Vayne , she killed the person that saved her life because she hates magical beings like Evelynn that killed her parents.

Sirsir9/1/2018, 10:06:03 PM1 votes

Brand isn't vengeful, its just trying to make a name/title sound cool
