So why hit just Ezreal, Riot?

Lux and Ezreal were the first two champions I ever learned to play in LoL- so both hold a somewhat special spot in my roster. So when I heard Blitzcrank rated them as a good couple, I was relatively happy. It's like hearing two friends that you thought were good together decided to officially show interest in one another.

But now I hear Lux has been given a line to deliberately shut down Ezreal? Why would you do that? What possible benefit does that provide to the gameplay, characters, universe, or fans?

From a gameplay perspective it obviously has no effect. From a character perspective it seems outright detrimental- Lux is losing content (a possible relationship) and gaining little, if anything, in return. Same with Ezreal. The universe isn't getting anything out of it either- the League of Legends universe isn't becoming more fleshed out by mentioning Lux has never spoken to Ezreal. And most fans have their 'ships' about who goes with who, fair enough, but I can't think of any other such relationship that was specifically removed by dialogue.

I hope answers come out with an update featuring Demacian lore or perhaps a new champion- because currently I don't see a very good reason to do that sort of thing. This isn't specific to Lux and Ezreal, I'm genuinely confused at this point why you would target any two champions in such a way.
