What’s the Function of Kassadin’s Tube Helmet Thing?

I just now realized that despite being his defining design feature, I don’t know if it’s ever been said what it’s for. Is it some life-sustaining device to pump oxygen into him? Was he wearing it when he entered the Void and got it physically attached to him in while in there? Is it some Void creatures fighting gear? Could it possibly also be some sort of symbiotic being attached to him like Kai’Sa (I doubt this one though as it doesn’t have a very organic appearance to it)?

His lungs probably got jacked up so it helps him breath or somthin. Maybe he is just constantly high.

Maybe he was wearing it to defend himself from the Void atmosphere but the corruption fused it with him (void is now described as a world mixing organic and inorganic things, so maybe that's what happened). Or maybe he just has breathing issues, I don't know.
