But I am pretty sure none of them ever used a gladius in place of a katana.

Only the best of ninja use them.
You can tell because they've never been seen.
They didn't teleport either, so I guess they aren't going for full fidelity.
I'm no expert... but judging video games on real life is asinine.
Pretty sure they also aren't built to take punches to the face. Or taunt people to punch them.
