... Otherwise he would have gone back to before he sent his friend out and told him to stay... Right?

Storyline-wise, he pulls the cord to set an anchor to return to. Any time before the cord is pulled, he cannot get to again.
He pulled it as soon as he realized something was wrong, but that was already too late.
