Is it okay to change a champion's name entirely during a VGU?

Evil Bisex Plant·8/19/2018, 11:36:28 PM·10 votes·6,099 views

I was thinking, because let's be honest: Volibear is just stupid... Nomen omen in a very wrong way...

And there are others who I think wouldn't mind changing their name for the same reason (because early League was notorious for this): Amumu Karma Nami Pantheon Sona MonkeyKing

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we should 100% change all of these, I'm not even saying we should change a single one. Sure, most of them are way too integral to the game and I got used to them, I'm just saying that when I started, these are those I was the most uncomfortable with.

I'm sure I'll get alot of hate for some of those (especially Nami), I get it.

I'm here only to start a discussion. Thoughts?

Edit: Seeing alot of comments, I just have to pin one thing: Before you comment your thoughts, please, look up what nomen omen means, otherwise we're only having another and another "what is wrong with this name?" comments.

Nami is fine. Sona is fine. Amumu is 100% fine. Wukong is fine if a bit generic. Pantheon, okay, maybe. Karma's fairly egregious.

Volibear is set in stone as Ornn does call him that in his VO.

Wait Nami, really? Care to explain? I'm not hating, I'm just a little surprised.

Waiting for Vaarus. There was a memo.

Would love a Pantheon Volibear name change.

Been wanting that for a while.

Volibear can just be Voli

They already explained that Wukong was originally Kong. He just had Wu added to it by Yi, the Wuju guy.

Amumu is fine, and I don't see what's wrong with Karma. It's fitting.

Why? there's no reason for that. I don't see what's wrong with wukong's name anyway (or the others). So he's a reference to the story of Sun Wukong/Son Goku but is that bad? Why would league not be allowed to do that? Nami, sona and (if you're asking for them to change) Lux are fine names that have a meaning behind them.

Eleshakai8/21/2018, 6:22:28 PM2 votes

There are a lot of cultures where names have literal, obvious meanings. Ever met a Japanese lady named Sakura? Welp, that means 'Cherry Blossom'. Is her name bad because it means something? What if she owns it and dies her hair pink all the time?

Even in English, most of our names DO in fact have meanings... just we often don't know our names' meanings. The name Sean is a religious reference, translating roughly to 'god's grace'.

There's nothing wrong with SOME names being derived from more obvious meanings, as long as not every name is that way. If it's just a few, then we have a good variety of 'ways characters get their names'.

As to your question of 'is it okay to change names' - I feel like only if the personality of the character changes to such an extent that it becomes necessary... or if the change is just a refinement of a name that was originally restricted by technical limitations(ex. Nunu and Willump or if they made Quinn 'Quinn and Valor').

Karma's name just reflects something from the real world, the concept of Karma and reincarnation that exists in some beliefs, I always thought her name was offensive and unnoriginal, Darha could fit her more.

Honestly, Amumu, Karma, Nami, Pantheon, Sona and Wukong are all fine.

The issue with Volibear is that it's up against names like Ornn, Anivia, Lissandra, Frostguard, Braum, etc - it simply doesn't have the same gravitas.

Robertsmash8/20/2018, 7:49:47 AM2 votes

Volibear and Wukong, yes change.

Amumu doesn't sound problematic to me. Maybe it's too close to "A Mummy"? Still has an ancient Egyptian, pharaoh-like vibe to it.

Karma... Sure? It being a word doesn't bother me, since it's more of a title now and Ionia's theme is somewhat related anyway.

Pantheon, I thought the same before his updated lore came out, but I'm fine with the constellation thing. Like Karma, it's more of a title anyway.

Nami and Sona... wut? I like when names have a linguistic connection to the character's theme.

I've always loved Nami

IDK most of these aren't that bad...

Except Wukong, I wouldn't mind that changing

Oh lord, first of all "look it up" is another way of saying "I'm a genius and you're an idiot"

Secondly, no, changing names is not acceptable. What's done is done. The only alternative I'd accept is Vaarus.

I think Nami, Karma, Sona and Wukong are fine. There's nothing really wrong with it.

Kinda agree with Pantheon Volibear andAmumu

Pantheon was named such because he was a generic spartan warrior and his champion designer was clearly inspired by a weekend viewing of 300. In his old lore he was just a normal soldier from a tribe of warriors representing his people in the League of Legends. Now with the aspect storyline the name kind of makes sense. Pantheon retains less of his individuality than Leona Diana Taric or Zoe do. Pantheon subsumed all of Atreus' consciousness and so he is more of a husk

If he were the same as them than they would need to call him Atreus in my opinion but clearly the Aspect of War is different than the other celestial themed aspects entirely. Riot will need to address this when he gets a VGU

Volibear also suffers from changing lore. Before he was a bear in a tribe of bears that took control of his tribe to follow Sejuani on the warpath. Now he is a god. It doesn't make sense.

Ornn, Anivia.... Volibear. Give him a cool ass Norse name and let him fit.

Amumu is welll.... Amumu. I don't think they need to change it but it's still a dumb name that I just got used to

JonnyBoyy8/20/2018, 10:49:05 AM1 votes

Yep volibear is indeed an off name to begin with. It can be changed into just "Voli" in his VGU. And maybe Volibear is just his title/orrn's nickname to him so that's why ornn calls him that and maybe nunu too. "Voli" - the Thunder Bear is a nice name

Camille Ferrøs8/20/2018, 11:52:30 AM1 votes

Pantheon should be Atreus

Reabilov or... Riot?

Volibear could use a different suffix like Voli-fric (I know this example is schist) cause Voli on its own does not sound like a fierce warbear demigod. Pantheon should be called Kratos. Edit》Or Volibârr like op said.

Nami and Sona are fine champion's name.

I'd say it is, but it would warrant a Traditional skin.

Meta Noir8/20/2018, 5:12:22 AM1 votes

A while ago I suggested Volibear being changed to just ''Voli'' especially, because pretty much the entire community calls him the shortform anyway. The -bear'' is just so silly and doesn't even make sense at all compared to his siblings names, but I got quite downvoted for it.

Voli just sounds pretty ''riot-esque'' and reminds me of ''Volt'' regarding his thunder theme.

KestrelGirl made a point though, with the Ornn VO... I can't see Riot backing off from this, because of the heavy effort behind changing it.

Some Champion names are quite a mess anyway, so just Volibear is a thorn in my eyes. The completely non region related french for example. Vladimir & Olaf are the extra kind of uninspired, but I personally don't get what is the problem with any other you have named. Also I would like it to be THE Pantheon & THE Mordekaiser (only in lore not ingame!), but I guess it is also far to late for these, eh?
