I'm near certain that Rammus is a Baccai

Baccai are failed ascendants, often twisted or malformed. Rammus perfectly fits this. In his short story, he demonstrates godlike feats and is already known to be immortal. He has the characteristics of the ascended, but then seems messed up. He's nearly humanoid, but the animal part is definitely the dominant look on him. I mean if there was a list of things required for him to believably be a Baccai, he's definitely fulfilled every characteristic you could think of.

Honestly, I always just assumed Rammus was an animal that gained ascension after some magic spill over however many years ago in the past it happened.

I thought a closer representative of a baccai would be Cassiopeia. Who clearly got Ascension juice when she accidentally woke up Azir, but is twisted and malformed.

Your way could work as well, of course.

Baccai are actually very well known in Shurima, sort of like a hermit social-caste. Along with that, they often appear more malformed, like a twisted, horrifying grotesque version of what animal they were meant to be. Rammus on the other hand, is actually revered as much more than a Baccai, most believe him to be a spirit or even as a god, many even having rituals about him.

So it's more likely that Rammus may be a spirit/demi-god on the same level as Ornn, Anivia and Volibear, just not as talkative of course.

Since they introduced demigods with the addition of Ornn, as well as putting Volibear and Anivia in that category, I assume that Rammus is a demigod as well.

We have no reason to assume that demigods are exclusively Freljordian and he absolutely fits the bill.

  • really strong animal features (Ornn is a ram, Anivia a bird, Volibear a polar bear and Rammus an armadillo)
  • godlike powers related to elements (Ornn has fire, Volibear thunder, Anivia ice and Rammus earth)
  • immortal
  • we know that he has an own cult

Rammus, in my opinion, is not malformed enough. Reading about baccai, I always imagined something really gross, with melting flesh, being a conglomerate of different animals.

I hope that we get a baccai champion some day in the future, tho.

Killing animals to eat them, that sounds normal to me and normal Galapagos giant tortoise have a life span of 190 years, so maybe, armordillos have even longer life span than that. Nothing really screams "godlike" about Rammus, except what people wants to see.

How about Amumu?
