So a little late to make this news but when I saw it I figured it was still worth sharing and I wanted to rant a little about it.

Honestly I wanted this to happen. Nothing fundamentally wrong with Mordekaiser's current lore but in the years since, things like world building and the general amount of lore exploration could mean old developments dont quite align with new. Where unforseen kinks need to be amended. Especially when the champ is to be reworked and the nature of new elaborate ideas being explored.

I want to ask Fauxschizzle- What might interest you the most about writing for Mordekaiser? You seemed to have a clear grasp on what you wanted to accomplish with Ezreal during his rework, what say you now with Mordekasier?

Please just don't pull the Lissandra here.

Mordekaiser is the one character in league who MUST remain a being of pure evil. I don’t want him to have any sympathetic qualities at all. Him being a merciless warlord of evil who’s crushes his enemies is part of his core identity imo

Mordekaiser's current character is as hollow as his armour.

He's a lack of character, without any defined personality or actual motivations that go beyond: "I'm Evil, thus I will dominate everything, hue hue hue" His place in the lore is already solidified by his past deeds but we have yet to see what lead him to choose this path, what his greater ambitions are and what exactly his bloody personality is.

Is he smug, condescending, sadistic, brutal? We'll know once his new VO and Lore hit.

He's needed a good fleshing out for quite some time now (get it, fleshing out, he doesn't have a body and only skeletal remains, hehe...) and by breaking down his character and rebuilding it with a more coherent image of who he's supposed to be is essential for creating a solid, well-written villain.

Hmmmmmm. I really hope they don't mess things up, I really like the current Mordekaiser lore. FauxShizzle wrote many of my favorite characters so it should be fine, but I wonder what they're changing. I think his backstory is pretty set in stone, evil warlord wanted to live forever so he created the Immortal Bastion to house his bones while he terrorized people, always coming back when killed. Eventually the bones were stolen (with the help of LeBlanc betraying him) and he sat dormant on the Shadow Isles until the Ruination happened.

That's basically the extent of his lore so I wouldn't be surprised if something is added after he's resurrected. I've always been curious how he and the Ruined King relate to each other, we don't know anything about the Ruined King in undeath. I've always thought since Mordekaiser's power is the same as the Mists, he becomes extremely powerful and leads most of the undead. Maybe the Ruined King became depressed and Mordekaiser locked him up to siphon his power Veigar style, idk.

I'm interested to see how this goes. He absolutely must remain entirely evil and sinister though, moving characters into grayer areas has been great for the lore but Mordekaiser is THE evil ruler. Not only is he evil, he enjoys his cruelty which makes him more malicious than something like the Watchers which just want to have nappy time without reality intruding.

I hope this isn't foreshadowing that they're going to fuck something up.

I think his lore is fine as it is. He's an influential character with potential for numerous interactions with other champions, and a place in the storylines of both the Shadow Isles and Runeterra as a whole. There's no need to change any part of him.

Wait... Didn't Mordekaiser already have a post-retcon lore already?

Are they redoing that? I am more scared than hyped to be honest. Mordekaiser post-retcon lore is perfect right now, he is a warlord that created a massive empire by himself after the Darkin wars and no1 could withstand his might, he then proceeded in becoming this specter that even when killed could resurrect and after the LB ordeal he is now conquering the Shadow Isles while not only being a superior form of undeath, and thus immune to the Mist control, but he can also control it.

He's still going to be an evil warlord that subjucated tribes in Valoran. Noxus lore surrounding the Immortal Bastion, Leblanc lore and more recently Veigar updated lore will root him in that.

Everything else including his relationship with the Shadow Isles is subject to change. He doesn't fit the Shadow Isles aesthetic as he stands (pale green blue ghostly apparition like features) That could be what changes.

I’m okay if he was like Gul’dan: sympathetic backstory, but turns into a horrible person.

I think they will keep Morde evil. The Swain soul fragment quote from Hecarim makes me think there will be a sort of internal conflict or even civil war among the Shadow Isles champions. Not necessarily a good vs evil plot. But one where there are champions who embrace undeath vs the ones who try and retain their humanity.

With Morde trying to spread the mists over Runeterra and the Ruined King trying to keep it confined to just the Shadow Isles.
