Gods of Runeterra

Started this off as a comment, but developed into something large enough to be a post. The following is my interpretation and not the only way of understanding the lore:

There are many different beings of great power in the world of Runeterra. However, even among themselves, these “gods” vary massively in their individual strength. Some are world forming creation gods while others are perhaps only a few hundred times stronger than a normal human. To help create some sort of understanding, the following tiers are helpful:

Tiers of gods

  • Greater gods: Present at/before creation
  • Medium gods: Interplanetary forces
  • Lesser gods: planet bound dieties
  • Demi-gods: Gifted divinity

Greater Gods: Right now, there are very few Greater gods we are aware of, including beings such as Aurelion Sol, Bard, and the Watchers. They wield powers on the level of the cosmos and are by far the most powerful beings we know of. Able to forge stars or warp reality, there is a massive difference between them and any of the other gods. They were present from the begining, aware of it or not, and are fundamental forces of the universe.

Medium Gods: The best examples we have are the Aspects of Targon, not to be confused with their Chosen (we’ll get to them later). Aspects seem to exist separate of their various hosts, so that a chosen could die but the Aspect lives on. Their powers reach to multiple worlds, but are clearly not creation level power. The Targonians had to use trickery to control Aurelion Sol, and even then it was only the destruction of his stars that kept him in line. Two other notable traits many medium gods share are that they usually embody some universal force found everywhere life is (Death, Justice, Sun) and are usually immaterial most of the time.

Lesser Gods: Able to alter landscapes and weave divine influence over mortals, Lesser gods are still nearly incomprehensible compared to a normal human. The likes of Ornn or Volibear, these beings presence alone can alter the area around them. Though they are planet bound, they are far stronger than anything else from their world.

Demi-gods: These are the most diverse of all the ranks of gods. These beings are massively more powerful than a normal mortal (see Taric’s color story) but are beneath a Lesser God in that they could not accidentally change terrain around them in a fight. A general rule of thumb is that if the god was created (Ascended, Chosen, Avatar of Volibear) they fall into this category. Some blur the line between Demi- or Lesser god, such as Azir and Xerath, beings substantially more powerful than the other Ascended, while others are tricky to tell if they join this tier, such as some of the Land Spirits of Ionia or deamons like Nocturne.

Nagakaburos: A massive question mark in the world of the gods. With no known comparison or great demonstration of power that seemed to push it, Nagakaburos could be a Greater god for all we know. Some rioters have hinted at the idea this elder god could be slightly stronger than Aurelion Sol, a truely incredible feat. However, this is far from concrete as it is not from the Universe page. The fact it embodies the concept of moving forward is akin to Aspcets and Medium gods, but is clearly different from them, not part of the Targonian empire or creating Chosen vessels to do its will. Hopefully we learn more about this cryptic being in the future.

And there you have it. A rundown of the various gods and their rough estimations of power. While each teir of god can have vastly different amounts of power, there are usually pretty distinct “break-points” between one class and the next. Things get a little blurry the farther down you go, but I hope this helps as a starting place when understnading Runeterra and its various Dieties. Until more lore comes out, thank you for reading!

Some champions and points I'd like to bring up are:

  • Bard - probably the most cut and dry of the list. Was confirmed by several members of the lore team that he's just as powerful as Aurelion, if not slightly more so. I think the most clear example of Bard and Sol being equal is how the Aurelion seems to at the very least respect the Wandering Caretaker something he doesn't even show to the beings that have literally got him enslaved at the moment.

  • Nagakaburos - I've seen two Rioters' statements about the strength of the bearded lady. One said that Naga is massively more powerful than Sol stating that comparing the two was like comparing a dung beetle to the theory of relativity, whilst another said the difference in power likely wasn't as big as that, but still gave the edge to Naga.

  • Kindred - is a somewhat interesting case and their power is ambiguous at most. It's basically been confirmed at this point that they are the physical manifestation of death, however the extent of their reach is not know. Are there other embodiments of death on other worlds? If a celestial being died, would they meet Kindred or an even stronger form of death? Then it basically comes down to how you as an individual would rate the power of death. To some it is a creeping inevitability that eventually consumes all living beings no matter how great or small. To others it is merely the ending is simply the ending and has no direct influence on someone's life until this point and an even smaller influence on reality as a whole. Not to mention how in the LoL universe resurrection is entirely possible, whether through blood magic like Sion, rebirth like Anivia or becoming undead like Karthus.

  • TahmKench - honestly one of the more underrated "powerhouse" characters in the game. Whilst definitely not a top tier God by any means, the upper echelon of his power is quite impressive. Some of his notable feats include time travel, reviving the dead and even offered to help get Lissandra out of her deal with the watchers.

Just some of my thoughts, what do you think?

Nagakabouros is actually explicitly more powerful than ASol and currently the most powerful known lore being, Bard is at least as powerful if not more so than Asol. Zoe also potentially rivals ASol.

Also, ASol is also NOT A GOD. He is immensly powerful and able to create stars, but he's just a Star Dragon.

Volibear Anivia and Or not are all Demigods.

Zoe is also probably as if not more powerful than Xerath Azir.

Ascension is essentially a shortcut to having been merged with an Aspect for a long period of time, making Zoe a 'natural' ascended whereas Xerath and Azir are 'artificial'.

Nagakaborous slightly stronger than Aurelion Sol?

According to the only quote of a Rioter we have in that matter, Nagakaborous is massively stronger than Aurelion Sol, actually so much stronger that he can't even fully grasp the difference of power between them. Nagakaborous should probably have a tier all for herself/himself/itself? above all of these you mentioned.

In general, people here in the boards tend to massively overestimate Aurelion Sol. For example, Zoe, which represents an aspect (which in your list would be a lower tier than Aurelion Sol) got stated to be on the same power level like him.

Just a quick reminder to everyone still reading the comments: please be respectful and kind. The lore is extremely ambiguous right now, and there are many interpretations of it, which was Riots entire design philosophy for it. People may have vastly different opinions on what they use as Cannon or how strong a given individual is.

I think you overestimate the power of demigods like Ornn, Volibear, and Anivia. They are weaker than strong Ascended/Darkin. Here's a comment from WAAARGHbobo from the Aatrox AMA:

But yeah-- he is a badass capable of killing "gods" like Orrn etc... And has in the past (even before being a darkin)

There are weaker Ascended/Darkin out there, but Azir, Nasus, Renekton, and Aatrox are all close to "perfect", while Xerath is able to keep up with them because of his raw power. Since Aspects (the humans ones) are weaker or more powerful than Ascended/Darkin on a case by case basis, I think they are generally above the Freljordian demigods as well.

Tbh most of our Aspect host champs aren't demigod tier in powerlevel and are just empowered humans (they arent old enough to be powerfull enough. The only one who is old enough is Zoe).

Am I confused by something? I don't consider Aurelion that strong at all. First of all he's not dimensional the same way Zoe and Bard are, second of all he's easily trapped. I wouldn't consider him a greater god. Not to mention I don't think he considers himself a god and he speaks of things way more terrifying than himself. I think the targon aspects are stronger tbh.
