Why the Darkin is Named Varus

So a lot of people have been complaining for various reasons about the new Varus short form lore. The biggest complaint I’ve seen is that Riot has somehow “killed” old Varus. This is an exaggeration.

Riot clearly wanted Varus’ corruption to be of Darkin influence, but Varus isn’t Kayn so the Darkin power has to be the one in the driver’s seat. This means that the player is controlling a Darkin, and it would be really fucking weird if the Darkin, the character itself, was named something else while the champion continued to be named Varus.

So what I believe Riot did is change the name. Varus is no longer the name of the man being corrupted, but the corruption itself. And since the Darkin is in control, it doesn’t really make a ton of sense for the name of the champion to correspond only with some inner conscience of some kind.

So we know going forward that two Ionian hunters are involved in the creation of Varus, what we do not know is if these hunters acted at the same time.

Think about it, if the first hunter, say his name was Pallas, took up the Darkin bow, saw his looming corruption, and sacrificied himself. Only the Darkin are some tough stuff so he couldn’t completely destroy the Darkin (Varus) or himself. Rather they both became trapped in the bow or whatever.

Now along comes a chap formerly named Varus, the new lore can play out on the exact same beats as the old one, only now Varus the Darkin has completed his corruption, albeit with two Ionians inside of him telling him what he’s doing is wrong.

The only reason I can think about behind such a change, is probably because someone in Riot thought the name "Varus" isn't Asian enough or something, given Varus is (or was...) an Ionian bowman.

A needless and mostly stupid change nonetheless and produces more problems than it solves imo, if this leak is true.

It would make more sense for the man to be in the driver's seat, perhaps because he made a deal with Pallus in order to take revenge, knowing he'd eventually lose his body.

Varus doesn't fit the naming scheme for darkin. (Having two a's in arow in the name) unless they start calling him Vaarus.

I think it would be more interesting of they were a symbiosis. The Darkin gives Varus power, and it's slowly transforming him into The darkin.

haven't read the new lore or anything but I believe that overall we are seeing the three stages of the darkin cycle, Aatrox is fully darkin, there is no trace of the person he once was or anything, Kayn is allowing us to see both sides of the coin, he can take control or be taken control of the two choices change how you play him. if varus is going to be a darkin he would be an unusual case of intentional corruption, while he is slowing becoming a darkin he is allowed to remain in control to exact his revenge, upon completion of his revenge he would likely be utterly consumed by the darkin leading to a possible gameplay and visual update to reflect this (if this is indeed the case) otherwise any new lore would require new VO to account for the darkin being in control rather than varus himself
