Cool idea and execution. Wish you would have done it on a new champion though, instead of deleting one I liked from the lore for it. Doesn't seem like that was necessary at all.
lame music and character assassination all rolled up into one? rito you done it again!
Yea, no. To hell with this.
How about we retcon
as a straight man.
Oh wait that's right, that'd be a terrible idea.
I'm confused by those who see this as a radical reworking of Varus's lore. Yes, the change from a single "dude corrupted by badness" to "two dudes corrupted by Darkin badness and all sharing a body" is, in some ways, a huge alteration of the character's essence. But what was there previously has been kept - Ionian guardian who, in desperation, gives himself over to an ancient dark power to fight off/get revenge against Noxian invaders. The changes have taken nothing away, and added a TON of depth to the character, making him (or them) something pretty unique in the world of Runeterra, with a firm grounding in emotion and history. I think the execution of the comic and video was, by and large, very strong. I found the writing and art in the Act I comic, and the visual direction of the music video, quite compelling. A lot of work and care was put into developing this story, and while I totally understand people not loving every aspect of its execution and detail, I'm incredibly impressed with the overall effort taken to develop the game world and explore narrative dimensions. Keep that shit up, Rito.
SUCH good music, I hope we can get it sometime.
The video was also well done.
Narrative nailed this new emotional struggle and conflict triangle perfectly. Since I never really cared for Varus until today, this peaked my interest and ended up being quite the satisfying reboot.
Jesus I hate this community. You're all so negative about everything that Riot Changes or Updates, speaking of which I don't see why you care about the Varus changes when I can guarantee that 90% don't even play him.
I loved it, the video sandwiched between the comics was a nice surprise. Love watching all of these homophobes have a meltdown. Anyways Varus himself isn't even human, let alone gay. The story is more complex than they seem to be able to wrap their one braincell around.
Incredible! I hope to see more lore stories come to life with animation like this! Gave me chills.
It's amazing the homophobes who refuse to acknowledge the artistic value, detail, and overall depth of this new story-line and simply write it off as "Guess they wanted an openly gay Champion". To the poster below who talks of unnecessarily updating an old champ as opposed to introducing a new champion, look at the re-work list.... Was Varus on there? No his name has been floated constantly among the ADC's who are getting a rework, this new lore update is actually quite the contrary to your "slapdash" comment; in which traditionally they release full visual and game mechanic updates then once everyone gets excited, oh yea we changed the lore too... This is quite the opposite and actually builds the hype and opens the door for all the possible ability reworks.
Finally, you keep focusing on the "Gay champion" thing instead of introducing a new champion, when in reality they opened the door for two new possible champions. The "Darkin" we all know Kayn is one, as is Aatrox, now we have confirmation that Varus is one; which means we have the possibility of two new characters to join this unique race of characters.
It's laughable that you try to circumvent your obvious homophobic opinions by masking it with "if it's not broke don't fix it" and attacking Rito for "screwing the pooch again" but fail to look behind all of the "gay context" and see the lore for what it is, a deepening story that adds value, and hopefully after a re-work, abilities and look that match said story. Yes they could have easily "made it a woman" but would that have made the story any better? This was a bond shared between two warriors, and just being statistically realistic, in all of the splash art, graphic novels, videos, etc that Rito have produced how many females have you seen in the masses of "Background soldiers" during fighting scenes?
Dear Riot, If you haven't noticed already boards are not happy with this, not in the slightest. What i see your employees bringing up seems to be a constant theme of - but look at the quality of the video and the comics. Let me ask you this - do you judge a bestselling novel on the quality of the Coverart or the quality of the story ? I think you get my point.
The salt is strong xD
What incarnation of vengeance? All I see is a genocidal monster released by two idiots who happen to be gay.
