Would Riot ever kill off a Champion?

So we know that lore and game are (mostly) separated from each other, but the implication is that all of the champions in the game are currently active/alive. I can recall during the Burning Tides event when the story had apparently killed off Gangplank and he was disabled for a few days before his rework went live.

I highly doubt that Riot would ever remove a champion from the game itself, but that doesn't mean much for the lore itself. There are still plenty of stories left to tell, but I wonder; would Riot ever kill off a champion canonically in the lore itself? It feels like we're just waiting for a lot of the more epic face-offs, and in some cases it's very likely that one of the combatants won't get out alive.

And if Riot DOES kill off someone lore-wise, who do you think would be likely to die?

If they did, I'm thinking it'd be a comic book style "death" where the character is alive again shortly thereafter.

It's also quite possible all the characters are actually dead in game, and we are just summoning their spirits over and over again for our own sadistic amusement.

Assuming comic book deaths?

All of them.

i mean if the lore were to advance in time any significant amount either kayn or rhaast would probably die, Nasus and Renekton might finally have their fight to the death, and Jhin would definitely murder a champion or 4.

I can totally see MissFortune and Gangplank facing each other for the last time in a duel. MissFortune will win but in the cost of her own life. Either by lost of blood (she wins, he's dead but MF is badly injured) or making a contract with Kalista on her dying breath to make sure Gangplank is dead (he's survives the duel but it's during The Hallowing and Kalista happen to be nearby.)

Or we can just do what they did with DB Riven and NB Yasuo and let the players choose who lives, who dies, and who tells their story.

Kalista died in her lore and Karthus is dead aswell, they are both basically ghosts wandering around for their own reasons. But Riot will never delete a champion from the game for this reason, wouldn't make much sence to put years of development into a champion and building a fanbase around it just to kill him off.

I could see for a rework that is a massive overhaul it could be possible

Jarvan also "died" in Garen lore but came back later , saved by shyvanna , so i guess not.

They will likely kill off a champion eventually, but not anytime soon. Because at the moment we simply don't have much lore for any champion(heck a lot of them don't even have a real lore),so killing anyone off would be a waste of a character at the moment(which is why I didn't think that GP was really dead,I mean we barely got to knew his post-retcon-self,so it was obvious he wouldn't die).

And yeah it is unlikely that they'd remove a champion from the game because of it. They might disable them for a short time and then let them return to the game.
