@Riot, I'm Hearing Things That Are Making Me Worry About LoL's Longevity

In a discussions with some awesome Rioters who actually care about the community enough to interact with us on controversial issues, I read some stuff that is pretty unsettling.

Riot Bioluminescence was awesome enough to talk to us about Riot's current structure...It's has been way too long since a Rioter has been intimate enough with the playerbase to actually talk about that kind of stuff. Riot Bioluminescence, you and your fellow RIoters who actually take the time to talk to us make this game so much better, just in knowing that our opinions are being heard.

That being said, the logistics of how Riot currently operates as described in this Rioter post really upsets me:

_"Here's a bit of insight into how Riot works on the organizational side of things.

Riot is a pretty big company, and that's awesome for a lot of reasons. It's less awesome for other reasons. For example, some companies like Riot spin up teams devoted to creating something - some tangible result at the end, instead of a fuzzy goal. These are called 'products', even though sometimes that 'product' might not be something you buy. It's like a quest objective - an achievable target that you can say is finished, so you can start the next thing. Very useful in a living game development.

So everything that Riot releases has a 'product team' behind it. What product is planned determines what Rioters are assigned to make it happen - if there's no 'product', then there's no-one assigned to it, and there's no work done on it. I.e. if you don't have a product, then it doesn't get made. Even if you made something in your own personal spare time, it couldn't go up on the website or anything official, unless a product was generated so that it could be translated/localized, announced, given the proper web support, properly integrated into the release schedule, etc.

(There are no one-man jobs, though coming up with an idea for a future product (new champ idea, or skin idea, or event idea) is totally exciting and open to input from anyone.)" _ It makes it clear that Riot only invests it's time into certain projects that can be labelled as "products". Whether they be champions, or maps, or reworks, it seems like everything needs to be a "product". When any kind of effort to improve Runeterra is made, there must be a clear direct goal in mind.

I think this is an effective way to create most aspects of a game...but not lore!

If you want to high quality game lore, then it CAN'T be done this way!!!!

Champions can't and shouldn't be developed in a vacuum. Other champions and the world they exist in should matter.

The Current lore doesn't feel like it takes this into account.

Lore sometimes consists of the silly random stuff that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but helps to develop the personality of champions. Under this current model, I don't see how RIot will ever produce that kind of stuff again!

To create quality lore, you need to plan things from the start so that all of the pieces will fit together as snuggly as possible.

In order for the League of Legends lore to be at a high quality there has to be someone who oversees all new content releases and unifies them to fit into the same world!

You can't just take the approach of "Make one thing at a time, and then throw them all into the lore together and be vague enough so that it works!" - which seems to be the way RIot is starting to go. I feel that is bad for the longevity of LoL to have champions that exist in a vague world.

Riot, you have shown that you can do better...Why are you taking the easy, generic, and boring direction with your lore?

Riot Please! Start Making Intricate Lore That Develops Runeterra Again!

The game isn't going to die or truly be affected by the lack of lore, not that it wouldn't make people happy.

Lore is nice and all but I agree with Jamaree; even complete lack of it will unlikely affect the longevity of LoL (the fact that lore is nearly nonexistent atm but LoL remains to be literally the most popular PC game is an indicator of that). Lore happens outside of the game, and is inconsequential when it comes to gameplay. We aren't playing an RPG.

People are leaving WoW in droves, but the lore there is as strong as ever; people are leaving because of the gameplay and the age.
