Hello Story and Arts Boards. This is a Comprehensive Zaun Dictionary/Field Guide. I have made this because in the midst of writing a story I found myself constantly looking for words/ terms and phrases from Zaun that I knew I had see before but had trouble finding them again. Here you will find most of the locations, groups, words, and phrases that give Zaun its character. I’ve made this for myself and for anyone else interested in getting to know more about Zaun. As always I appreciate any additions of suggested updates/changes to this Field Guide/Dictionary. The more we work together the better and more expansive this can be. I believe that every region deserves one of these tho. Having to make this makes me wonder if Riot has anything this developed for their writers, it really helps you keep track of everything. Here’s the link to the original post in which the issue was brought up: https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/story-art/cOE4UIr4-zaun-info-search-i-need-help Here's the concept and lore I'm doing this for: https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/skin-champion-concepts/FpUgUTE8-champion-concept-kaira-hopeos-endurance

The Glorious Evolved also celebrate the old Zaunite tradition of sacrificing something personal for Progress Day in the hopes the next iteration of invention would be better. They give their discarded flesh parts as offerings to a shrine dedicated to The Gray Lady wrapped in cloth or suspended in jars of fluid. Non-augmented individuals are forbidden to step foot onto their sacred grounds, but the Glorious Evolved often take in the sick, seeing the removal of dying flesh as a key to transforming a person’s life and faith through technology, Piltovan or Zaunite, the Glorious Evolved doesn’t discriminate.

The production of synthetic crystals initially created in Piltover is also rumored to be a heavy contributor to the Zaun Gray. Fatal to breathe where densely settled - It is believed to be the cause of the lung blights that afflict many Zaunites. At times when it gets thicker it becomes a constant chemical fog that makes every breath a battle. Most days, it’s thin enough to breathe deeply without coughing up something wet. Primarily originates in the Sump and disperses into plumes drifting upward. When the Zaun Gray grows thick, some say Janna blows it away. It gives off a chemical smell, like it could singe off your nose hair if inhaled too deeply. To Zaunite though air outside the city is thin and unsubstantial. 2.) Dusk

It is capable of amazing feats, from powering machinery to creating beams of light capable of cutting the strongest steel. The process of crafting hextech is a closely guarded secret, and no two artificers work to the same methodology. As such, each item of hextech is a unique artifact of rare beauty, a bespoke creation that will likely have taken years to craft.

#Questions about How Zaun works Currency? Coins: gold hexes, silver gears/cogs, and bronze washers. Zaunites may refer to any amount of money as cogs.

What are the Rites of passage for the kids of Zaun? Hitching a ride on top of the Rising Howl. Reaching the top of Old Hungry with all your limbs intact, cutpursing a baron’s man or playing knock-and-run with a stilt-walking sump-scrapper.

Accent? loose familiarity as opposed to Piltovan affectation, though accents from many other locations can be found in both cities due to the fact that many merchants pass through.

Architecture: Most of Zaun's structures are crafted from lattice ironwork, either forged in the many seething foundries or wrought from scavenged material discarded from above. Though there is brutal functionality to the bolts-and-rivets of Zaun's structures, its inhabitants still manage to craft breathtaking wonders. Many structures are build into the cliffs or extend from them. They create a lattice work building on top and around existing structures to create anchor points. Chem-lights burn in bolted sconces and through creative use of colored glass, polished steel lightweels bring light to the depths. Other forms of street lights are Arc lamps and Chem-lumens.

Attitude towards magic: Exploit

Who controls Zaun? Industrial oligarchy Chem barons are not the government, but they are in control of Zaun. There is no formal government. The powerful Chem-Barons keep a loose alliance that keep the city from falling into chaos. They are rich and influential, and if you disagree with them you might disappear. That makes them in charge, even though there is nothing official about the arrangement.

Religious Related Info? Janna, The Glorious Evolved, The Gray Lady

Awwww yisss. This is my kind of thing - I love this :D

[zombie-nunu-hearts]

Regarding your currency question, it's gold hexes, silver gears, and bronze washers, as the main coins. However, people in Zaun will often call gears, cogs, and cogs has come to stand for any amount of money - like saying "cash". So a pocket full of cogs doesn't necessarily mean silver gears, but could be any combination of coinage.

A chest full of golden gears, however, is a bit of a slip up. It's possible that it's just another term used that means a hell of a lot of money, but golden gears are not a real type of coin. It'd be like saying a fist full of diamond dollars. Doesn't make literal sense, but could still be a colloquialism.

One thing you have missing here, that I think I would have included if I were doing this, would be call outs to where these terms were from. References :) But for personal use, I could see this being exactly enough.

As a lore enthusiast...this is just... yes...[slayer-pantheon-rainbows] We really need the option to save posts.

Now that no one has looked at this post for a half a year, I can safely reveal that "plague rat's brown cough" actually means a "plague rat's fart." You're welcome, world!

All of this is amazing. Wish we had the same for the rest of the factions cause this is exactly what we need when archiving lore terms.

Hot damn this is really awesome!

I might have to bookmark this and steal it for when I'm making a D&D campaign.

This is super neat. Great work. I'd love to see other field guides on other Runeterra districts.

We needed a post like this. I'm glad to see that there are people like you who are very enthusiastic about the lore. Good job! +1

I would bet that Emberflit alley is simply a secluded corner in or just below the entresol level. Viktor left a window open. In the depths of Zaun I think this would be incredibly unlikely. In lower levels an open window is much more likely to allow unwelcome pollutants and guests into your lab.

JooshBox12/18/2017, 8:16:14 PM1 votes

Wish we had pictures to go with these, great work though!

Pretty confident Prigg's Industries is old lore canon. Since it hasn't been mentioned once in recent time, nor was it referred back to in Graves' LU. It might still exist within the prime lore, but I dont think it's fair to assume so without evidence.

Absolutely loved this! Throughly enjoyed the terminology and culture of Zaun. You should do more, shoutout if you do Targon and/or Ionia!
