They're from beyond the stars and want to bring darkness to the world?

Probably because of a lack of a proper rival skin series to Star Guardians, facilitating the need for enemies who could pass for the enemies of magical girls. Hence Void champions.

Aren't the Dark Star skins supposed to rival them? Or at least implied?

Dark Star is its own thing and is more rivaled by the already in universe celestial champs anyway, at least as far as I remember.

The dark star skins are likely waaaay above the star-guardian power level. I mean look at their splash arts,Thresh and varus are far bigger than entire planets.

Cuz Void champions are the best group we have to rival the Star Guardians so far. Perhaps when another skin line (Dark Star?) is expanded we'll see some more about the Star Guardians.
