Is Ezreal the Champion closest to being 'Main Protagonist' in League of Legends?

Even though because Runeterra is large with many different storylines which are not focused on a specific character, Ezreal is the closest one to the role of the main character. He is an adventurer with pretty appearance who explores the world and gains knowledge and power with his adventures. He has the ideal anime protagonist theme and characteristics that appeal to most of the audience. When someone is the main protagonist it does not mean that they have to be part in all the events, a lot of things can happen without them and sometimes others taking the central role but Ezreal is so far the most ideal character as a main protagonist in Runeterra.

I don't think we should think that way. In my eyes, every champ is the protagonist.

See it like real life. Everyone is the protagonist in his own story. Therefore, for me, the protagonist is the champion I can identify with the best.

Every champ has a unique and interesting story to tell. Ezreal is that guy wandering around and finding stuff. Urgot is the tragic existence brought back to life, suffering because he lost his humanity. Vi is that girl who was once a criminal herself, now fighting for justice in Piltover and found her nemesis in Jinx.

Personally, I don't feel connected to Ezreal at all. For me, he is boring as a character. I would never consider him being the protagonist. But that is just me. Everyone choses his/her protagonist for this game.

If anything, I think Lux Lux might fill that role more now with recent changes to Demacia's lore. She definitely has some wanderlust and not gonna lie she's much more interesting as a character than Ezreal. Ezreal

Riven since she's edgy like that. It'd be a pretty shit anime, but the body pillow sales would go through the roof

I would say Ezreal Jax Ryze Taliyah come closest to this, if we're taking things on a global scale.

Ezreal is an Indiana Jones-like explorer/archaeologist who travels across the world in search of forgotten artifacts, civilizations, cultures; etc. But unlike the latter mentioned below, he does it entirely out of selfish interest - not out of good intentions or desires to help people... at least for now. This might change in the future. Jax is traveling across the world in an attempt to gather an army of skilled and elite fighters, commanders, generals, etc. who're good enough to combat a potential large-scale Void invasion. Ryze has been venturing across Rune Terra over the course of hundreds of years to in a desperate effort collect all of the potentially cataclysmic or even world-destroying runes, so that they don't fall into the wrong hands. Taliyah is on a global journey to find and contact a group of elite elemental arcane users (such as Yasuo -who masters wind. and Azir - who also masters earth, specifically the sands,) in order stop Xerath from invading Shurima with his totalitarian rule.

Now - when it comes faction-based protagonists, that's a different story entirely.

Though, with the recent animatics - I think we have a good idea of the "main" characters for 4 regional factions. MissFortune - seems fairly obvious after Burning Tides imo; doesn't really need an explanation. Darius - people are probably wondering why he would be chosen over Katarina but I think it makes perfect sense when you realize that his bio gives him so much to work with. A general who travels across Rune Terra, interacting with & fighting off a variety of armies from multiple civilizations/cultures, started from nothing in his childhood and managed to work his (and his brother's) way to the top through sheer will, has a shaky, uncertain relationship with Swain and the rest of the Noxian elite; there's so much potential going for him.
Zed - once again, he may seem like an unusual pick over someone like Shen, especially when so many see him as a villain - but Riot did state that he's actually quite a gray character and that he is fighting to better Ionia in his own way; we'll see more of this in later lore updates. Plus he's much more popular and iconic than Shen and has more ties to other Ionian champions. Lux - 3+ years ago, I would've said Garen, but it seems like Lux has been getting more attention and play over the years. And with the new lore updates regarding her secret identity as a mage and her new ties to Galio; there's too much potential going for her now.

As for the other factions: Zaun - Ekko Too much of a given. Also helps that he has so many lore ties to both Zaunite and Piltovan champions alike. Piltover - Really difficult to choose from, but I think it could go to any of the following: Jayce Vi Caitlyn. Though lore is strongly leaning towards Vi, thanks to her connections to both Zaun and Piltover. Shurima - If we take Taliyah out of the equation, then I would say Sivir for Modern Shurima and both Azir & Xerath for ancient Shurima. The Void - Before the recent lore updates, it was clearly Kassadin, but thanks to new Jax lore giving him ties to Icathia and the Void - as well as trying to stop a void invasion, I'm not so sure. I think Jax is replacing Kassadin - who will likely receive major lore retcons; becoming something entirely different. Bandle City - If we're talking about the city specifically, then Tristana seems like the best candidate. Poppy, Kled, Rumble, Gnar, Ziggs and etc have stronger ties with other factions than Bandle itself. Freljord - Tie between Ashe and Sejuani. Or maybe even both. Targon - Taric. I don't think it's Leona & Diana because they're too distracted at warring with each other. Taric seems dedicated to his goals of stopping the Void. Shadow Isles - Yorick seems like the initial given thanks to his lore and long-tern goals. The problem is, though - he isn't a very popular, appealing or relateable champ for most people. So this is why I see Lucian and overtaking the protagonist role. He seems to spend a lot of time over there since he's also obsessed with wiping out the Shadow Isles' curse. Now - ancient, pre-cursed Blessed Isles on the other hand - then it could definitely go to Yorick or even Kalista .

Gosh I hope not

Ryze Ryze is the closest to be a main protagonist of Runeterra, being suggested to have relations with a lot of champions from most of the regions indicating that there is a future masively connected story spearheaded by him.

Not to mention Ryze has always been the mascot of the game.

PermabannedGaren6/10/2017, 4:00:46 PM2 votes

There is no single protagonist. Rather, each region has an overarching story with a champion most fitting the role of protagonist.

Bandle City: Hardest one to place since nothing fucking happens there, at least as far as I recall. Teemo is probably the best choice.

Demacia: Lux overall.

Freljord: Ashe and Sejuani are both protagonists on separate sides of a conflict ala Light and L, or Blondie and Tuco, with Lissandra as the main antagonist. Tryndamere is sort of the protagonist of his own side story, which is far less important to the setting overall but more deeply personal to the character.

Mount Targon: Taric Leona Diana All these protagonists. Leona and Diana more than Taric.

Noxus: Katarina and Darius

Piltover: Caitlyn Vi The ultimate yuri Piltover protagonist team. Ezreal doesn't really fit because as far as I know he has no real story connecting him to anything or anyone of note.

Shurima: Taliyah and Azir

The Void: Kassadin

Zaun: Viktor Ekko

Bilgewater: MissFortune Gangplank

Ionia: There is no one big overarching story of Ionia so it's hard to say. I guess Xayah comes closest with her shitty rebellion, along with Shen as the vanguard against Zed's raging metrosexuality.

Shadow Isles: Yorick, with Mordekaiser as a particularly dark villain protagonist.

Not even close. Ezreal's story revolves around him trying to be an overachiever to block out the depression from his parental abandonment. Compare that to some champs who are genuinely trying to save the world, like Ryze, Shen, Kassadin and Bard. Or champs that are just nice people with no malicious motive, like Braum, Janna or Ivern.

Or champs who live in hardship but are trying to make the world a better place for everyone: Ashe ,Ekko, Viktor, MissFortune.

Ezreal does not feature in any storylines but his own. He's not involved in the major conflicts of Shurima, Piltover or Zaun. He is just a kid who likes vacations.

There is no "main protagonist" of league, because there is no main story of league. There are dozens of stories, each with their own protagonists, and Ezreal's story is a rather minor one.

Sharjo6/10/2017, 11:55:15 AM2 votes

Ezreal, Nami and Ryze are pretty good contenders for main protagonist of League, if such a role could ever truly exist.

mkyner6/10/2017, 2:37:49 PM2 votes

Well, one of the main characteristics of the protagonist is "the character making the decisions that move the storyline forward". Ezreal might be a main point of view, but I don't see him as a protagonist. The major political leaders like Swain, Ashe and Jarvan are probably the ones making the decisions with the biggest impact on Runeterra's overall story (such as it is). But like others here have said: every Champion has his/her own story going. They are their own protagonist in that story, and also might serve as supporting characters or antagonists in another Champion's story.

I would say, there can be no main character of Runeterra just as there is no main character of Earth. There happens to be many great historical figures throughout Earth's history. Each of whom are protagonists of their own individual stories. I feel the same about Runeterra. The story of Runeterra is a really an ensemble piece. Although some characters are going to have more impact on Runeterra than others, each character has their own importance.

A good example of an ensemble piece is The Wire. There's really no main character other than Baltimore. Cedric Daniels, James McNulty, Omar Little, Stringer Bell, Avon Barksdale, Reginald "Bubbles" Cousins, Marlo Stanfield etc. are all important characters, but the show isn't about or driven by just one of them.

I think a better comparison would be with George R Martin's world . There's no "main character of Planetos". In the story of "A Song of Ice and Fire", the three main characters are obviously Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow. But that's just a fraction of the history of Westeros let alone the whole world. 20 years before the events of ASOIAF the "main characters" would be Robert Baratheon, Ned Stark and Rhaeger Targeryan. 300 years before that, it would be Aegon Targaryen. Across the Narrow Sea, there could be countless more great historical figures, events or "main characters" in Ashai, Yi Ti, The Dothraki Sea, Ancient Ghis, Ancient Valyria etc. Not to mention the southern continents of Ulthos and Sothoryos.

I'd rather have Lux as the main protagonist (for Demacia, at least). The "handsome man" trope fills the protagonist slot too often.

Ahri Rom com anime?

Unpaladin6/10/2017, 12:09:49 PM1 votes

Ekko has this feel as well. If Ezreal is the closest, Ekko is definitely a runner up.

EROTIC RAID BOSS6/10/2017, 6:52:38 PM1 votes

Ezreal isn't even the main character in Piltover.

I think right now, the closest champions to that role are more like main characters in their region-

Lux, for Demacia for sure.

Ahri for the Vestaya? Maybe, she had an extra short story and she's got a lot of room to grow into that story

Sivir or Taliyah in Shurima, feel like they have the most central story about coming between Azir and Xerath.

Vi is probably being set up to be the biggest player in Piltover/Zaun. Ashe is likely the main character of the Freljord.

And of course Miss Fortune is the main character in Bilgewater lore.

Girl Power I guess lol

Ezreal has a lot of tropey main anime protagonist stuff going on, but his story is super unimportant to runeterra. He's gotta be one of the less important characters right now.
