As a fencer, and someone considering Fiora, I love the proposed walk cycle update.

For those of you who may not know, a bunch of champs are expecting updates to their walk/run cycles. I would just like to voice my thoughts one one of them.

Here is a video primarily showcasing Fiora's update: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c_ZuNjf7fo

I've seen people say "too similar to X" or "it doesn't look natural." However, many people won't realize the many subtle techniques used in actual fencing seen in the cycle that weren't in the old one:

  1. Her body is upright, such that her chest is not a target.
  2. Her non-weapon arm is held back to prevent attacks to it.
  3. She is more maneuverable on the balls of her feet.
  4. She keeps her blade facing straight forward at all times to stay on target.
  5. Her hips are kept at a steady height for balance.
  6. Her left foot is at an angle for stability.

Fiora now uses form more fit for a professional duelist of the highest skill. It may seem strange to some, but this cycle is actually more authentic to her character. I love it.

As a person who walks, I love the proposed walk cycle updates of all the champions... Except those who dont walk

I have an idea! Why not use old for the out of combat and new for in combat similar to aatrox's animations when he is just walking around. The only reason for her to move with that new walk logically would be in combat.

As a... different type of fencer. Technically, I guess.

I, too, like the animation. Though I do think it seems a bit odd that someone would walk about in stance while just walking about the place and not in a fight. It'd be neat if we could get animations of characters moving more naturally, then shifting into a battle stance when getting close to an enemy.

Probably too much work for a benefit only a handful of people will even notice, though.

When I first saw the new Fiora walk, I was a bit turned off. I found it so strange that people would walk like that! Oddly enough, it's grown on me. What you listed made a lot of sense and I think I'm ready to welcome it with open arms.

(No experience in fencing)

Since everyone is coming out, as a fencer (saber, much like fiora) I like it but eh, I feel like that should be an in combat walk. Her previous walk/run was silly but that update isn’t practical out of combat. There are proper stances for runningas well, which I assume someone like Fiora would know (people with combat experience outside tournaments and duels).

On that topic, wouldn’t it be more logical for her to not keep her rapier out at all times? While travelling it would only be logical for her to sheath it. It is also silly that she uses what looks like a rapier as a saber. Rapier goes stabby stabby saber goes slashy slashy.

I know this might not sit well with some people but I felt like it had to be said.

The only problem I have is that I just can't see a character walking like that over long distances. If it was an in-combat or near enemy animation it would be perfect.

She looks a little bit goofy in the new walk

Goodness gracious, I recognize the fencer movement ("Have at thee!", and all that), but it looks like she's strutting more than Miss Fortune!

Quinn's isn't looking so bad, but...isn't she technically carrying an automatic crossbow? I get confused with Vayne on this. Because it looks like her old walking animation (haven't even thought of this before) is pretty much the exact same as carrying a machine gun in a combat scenario, which I would consider fairly appropriate when scouting out enemy territory.

Both things are probably just about getting used to it, so unless this is another change for the sake of change, then I'm game for it.

So as someone who is also did quite a bit of fencing, though it has been a few years, my thought is that her foot movement is way too large. You want both feet on the ground as much as possible. On the other hand her walk has her doing the absolute opposite, each step would completely lock her into that forward movement until her front foot hits the ground. A big part of fencing is practicing your footwork so that there isn't that opening.

If they kept her foot movements smaller and lower to the ground it would be a lot better imo. I wouldn't have her feet cross each other either, that is really only ever done in fencing when trying to cross large distances quickly to attack or retreat, and thus it doesn't make sense for it to be part of her walk.

As a fencer (sabre, epee, and foil), I agree completely.
