Hi, I speak Armenian and Swedish and I've noticed some of the Champion names mean something in those languages that portraits the Champs. Is this coincidental or intentional?
Ahri - Means "come here" in Armenian. Ahri is a seductress, so hence the name?
Brand - Means "fire" or "on fire" in Swedish. Name speaks for itself.
Riven - Means "torn" in Swedish. She's broken etc.
Just thought to share. :)
Ahri's name is Korean which from where her theme is based on, the Korean version of nine-tail fox folklore.
Ari (아리) (meaning Graceful or Elegant)
That was her original pending name (1 in 6 other choices), respelled on release.
Both Brand and Riven are English, or you can also say it's other European languages it doesn't matter all that much as they share a lot of similarities between the western languages, for the most part.
I know that Sona is latin for sound (?) and Zyra is hebrew (?) for seed.
I think Riven is just a coincident, but Brand is definetely inspired from scandinavian languages. After all, Brand as a character draws a lot of inspiration from the phenomenon of Ragnarok in norse mythology.
And to be super specific, Brand kind of means "big and out of controll fire" rather than just "fire", making it even more fitting for Brand as a character. :)
Been reading an old english book as of late that uses 'riven' as if the word 'broken' doesn't even exist. But Riot definitely picks relevant names for their champions, preferably in a languange from a region from which the champions home region takes inspiration.
"Leona" is "Female Lion" in spanish, Leona is female...

Olaf the berserker is a reference to the movie Clerks, where a russian guy named olaf sings his song called ''Berserker''.
Just thought it's funny their names works with the meaning of the words, heh.
