Reborn is Great! Shurima is okay... but these still don't address some underlying issues.
Seeing
get a lot of the love he finally deserves is great and seeing some history and somethings from Darkwill (Icon Please) and
has me all sorts of excited. I can't tell you enough how happy I've been with seeing part I and part II of this so far. I'm ecstatic over this, even if it's coming in small portions but it's coming consistently and brings the promise of something more.
With Shurima I feel very torn. It was great to see
and
fleshed out well and redefined in a way that not only made sense but was interesting to read. Nasus narrating and the comic strip and video tying together felt great to see. I sincerely want to see more about how this dilemma develops between them.
was introduced in an eventful way and to
who went from being "That lady with the money" to being a character who has the blood line of an emperor in her blood but not just that, but someone who tied pretty well into Noxus and Shurima as a mercenary from the desert. Even then she's clearly the leader of some sort of tribe.
However with more antagonistic characters like
and
we don't see more the picture beyond painting them in a light that isn't fully fleshed out or well defined. One's ties to their family was left so unsure that people had to repeatedly question if she was in fact a Du Couteau and Xerath's reasoning for his actions has been stripped from pretty much everything for later retelling. It feels like they are just there to be jerks rather than fully fleshed out characters with their own motivations. I feel a bit more disconnected from these characters because their biographies are being dumbed down a bit for future story telling.
weren't even touched upon during the event and were given the briefest of mentions. Their three sentence biographies stand and literally nothing was done with it during a Shuriman event. These are characters that shouldn't be simply slapped onto an event if they're not going to be touched upon at all.
As for
. There's no light way to say it but he got a worse treatment than
did during Freljord. The creative team didn't do him any justice. He went from being one of the most fleshed out characters in the setting that had this wonderful tie in to the crystal scar and journal of justice to being... a three sentence summary about how he's a malicious monster guarding **something. **.
So just like
, he's just kind of there in this event with a voice over that makes no reference to anything else occurring around him or in
case no longer makes any sense with his current character.
I don't understand what's going on with these current three line biographies, especially now that after the Shuriman event is over that they don't exactly link to anything at all and just sort of stand there as a void.
But I also feel that these events stand well on their own. But more importantly work in a setting where the Institute of War works. We still are seeing imagery of summoners being used or references to them and yet they're not there in the setting? I feel like it would stop creating a disconnect for those who have been deeply invested in the games lore if the team would sincerely try to work with incorporating these elements into the story in some way that was not overshadowing. I've seen it done in the fan community so why can't it be done by the creative team? As it stands none of these events contradict anything in place.
TLDR: I hate putting these up because you should read the thread but.
**Reborn: **
Darkwill. Pretty awesome. It's a good way to give more insight and is small enough to do a lot with and tell a story right. I'm legitimately excited for this.
Shurima:
All are getting some good expansions to their backgrounds or retellings. I like how these characters are developing. I want to see more.
Hurts to see that these characters have seemingly become more linear. I don't like how they're being portrayed in this story telling way because there is more to them than well... antagonistic qualities.
: Biography change. No tie in to the event. Pointless change. Hurts to see. Stop tying in characters that serve no purpose in the story telling.
: I hate this. Above but so much worse because it kills the character. I doubt we'll see him get anything just like
did when relating him to Freljord. (He got a nice *Ionian *skin though didn't he.)
**Biography abridgements are pretty bad and if there's no follow up to linking to anything than they shouldn't serve as the introductory to the character, especially if there's no link or other material. ** ** Institute of War can exist with both of these matters and doesn't need to be incorporated with the event. It wasn't with Freljord. It wasn't with the Shadow Isles. It does with Shurima. And it does with reborn. While it doesn't need to be the focus it can still exist as an entity that can later have its own touch upon that can add rather than take away from a story. **
