Vel’Koz could be a Watcher

The “Eye is the Void” was released in the weird limbo of lore that existed in proximity to the Retcon, he lacks extensive lore in the form of an updated long bio and short story.

He does have an updated short bio that makes mention of Vel’Koz perhaps being one of the first Voidborn to emerge into Runeterra.

Referring to his origin in this way leads me to believe that Vel’Koz is very, very old. While potentially all of the void champions are timeless, Vel’Koz could be the one with the longest rap sheet.

What we know about the Watchers is that they are the masters of the Void. How this is accomplished or to what ends are unclear, but as of writing, the Freljord lore of the early relationship between Iceborn and Watchers ended with the battle on the Howling Abyss. The Watchers were Imprisoned by a magical bridge built by Ornn.

Art in concepts related to the Watchers can be seen as reminiscent of Vel’Koz’ design, large eyes, and tentacles.

So I believe that when the Void is revisited in the future, Vel’Koz will take a level in Badass and ascend the hierarchies of the Void.

My other question, could the ancient Iceborn be somehow similar to the Ascended of Shurima?

Well, even if Riot could retcon his lore and change it 180 degree, I doubt that. For reasons...

First reason, Vel'Koz with his voice lines doesn't show a strong malevolent personality. Actually, he is curious. He is a champion that wants to understand how things work but lacking morality inevitably pushes him to have terrible actions for learning. His primary goal is not destroying Runeterra, or universe. He just wants to learn, and for that, he destroys. I think he would be against the total annihilation, given his curiosity for knowledge. (Since nothingness excludes knowledge too)

His obsession for knowledge as well as not giving a damn about anything except knowledge is unique and It shouldn't be removed. And if you don't remove, you can't have a watcher.

Other reason, a watcher champion means HYPE. A hype that would be insane. And It shouldn't be wasted with Vel'Koz when it is already a risky move. You can disappoint readers and waste a potential at the same.

Last reason, even though there are similarities, Vel'Koz doesn't resemble a watcher in appearance that much. In Bard teaser, a watcher has arms, many of them, in one of watcher concepts, there are far more beasty and less alien like compare to Vel'Koz. This gives me the idea that Riot is considering watchers to be unique, rather than retconning a champion to be a watcher.

  • Watchers are much scarier and frankly much bigger.

Vel, like every league void champion, serves their terrifying pupose inna unique way

Ve'koz is hard to develop lore for as he is a creature of the void yet does not have the urge to destroy like them. Him only wanting knowledge is quite unique. He does have ties to Zilean although it's minor. As vel'koz appeared at Zileans tower after the void invaded and destroyed everything else. Chances are Ve'koz would be on the hunt for Zilean after gathering information from his tower.

Having Vel'koz interact with any other champions would be difficult because of how uncaring Vel'koz is. He wouldn't think anything of them. He would simply attempt to destroy them for more knowledge. Anyone he deems an obstacle to his knowledge gathering will result in him immediately trying to kill them. As seen from him doing so to other voidlings around Zilean's tower.

No point in making theories ... tomorrow some story designer at RIOT HQ will wake up and say:

You know Watchers where part of a Teemo dream all along ... let's quickly change his lore to make it more fitting to his new role of ruler of Runeterra!!!

BTW pretty confident we will eventually find out that Teemo is also an Ascended, a Darkin, The void Itself, The hero Poppy seek, the Ruined King and Nagakabouros

This is the first thing people speculated when Vel'Koz was released, actually, and Riot said there is no relation between him and the Watchers. However, they could always retcon it.

  1. Void spawn are purpose-built. Vel'koz is a scout. He's small, has probing tentacles, and a big, scanning eye. That is all. MAYBE you could make the argument that Vel'koz was made in the Watchers' own image.
  2. The Iceborn's power comes from the Void itself - they were essentially given their power as a gift in exchange for their servitude. By contrast, the powers of the ascended are celestial and come from the same place of origin as the aspects.

Someone correct me if any of this isn't accurate as of current lore.

Idk as much as I want to believe in the theory that Vel is a watcher and I wanna see him being one but he doesn't match the statues and the Watchers look...But he isn't mindless like the other voidborn he himself even says the voidborn is primitive kill and eat kill and eat while has a different purpose consume and learn..what if the somehow all of the stuff the voidborn consume is somehow sent to Vel (if he is a watcher) like the essence of the thing they ate is sent to him to analyze and learn and him being hungry for more and more knowledge would make sense why the void is spreading everywhere in the whole universe.

I doubt I could find it again, but a Rioter commented offhand while Kaisah was being revealed that the physical Void beasties we play as in League would find the actual Void just as inhospitable to live in as a human would. If that's accurate, I doubt the Watchers are physical beings at all. More like disembodied sapiences. Their ability to perceive defines them from the non-things that fill the Void.

And to perceive, after all, is to Watch.

I don't understand how a Watcher could be the master of hte Void floating around somewhere in space and yet be defeated by 'regular' League people and sealed behind a door.
