Changes to champion lore and why they're bad
So this is just my little rage from finally reading poppy's reworked lore and story. And frankly, Riot, as someone who values the storylines in 99% of the games I play, I am appalled by the fact that it was completely and utterly changed.
Why?
Does anyone remember the original Poppy's lore? First, it gave a reason for her name. Second, it created an interaction between her and another character in the game that is entirely destroyed by the change in her rework.
Short version: Poppy was born as the daughter of a blacksmith, named because the sound that the sparks from the furnace. Her father was commissioned to craft a helm, "glorious beyond comparison", for one of the generals of Demacia. He did, and on the trip to Demacia to deliver the helm, the two were attacked by Noxian assassins, to prevent the helm from reaching Demacia. Poppy's father hid her and tried to fend them off, only to fall with Poppy in hiding, watching her father killed. She continued to deliver the helm, refusing payment for it, saying nothing could make up for her father's death. She then took her father's forging hammer, Whomper, and began to wield it as her weapon, with a big grudge against Noxus. She was also made Bandle City's Ambassador to Demacia.
So not only did you essentially strip her of her title of "Ambassador to Demacia" that she held before, but something else broke entirely.
Now, after the ambush of her father, and before arriving at Demacia, there was a key interaction that took place between her and another champion... the interaction is the only thing that aligns this other champion to Demacia... and in fact without this interaction... this champion wouldn't have joined the League of Legends.
The Sentinel's Sorrow,
As Durand crossed the Howling Marsh with his masterwork in tow, he was set upon by Noxian assassins in force. Outnumbered and overwhelmed, Galio looked on in horror as the murderers cut down his charge, executing him swiftly before vanishing back into the mists. Stripped of his reason for being, Galio despaired. For years he remained in solitude, standing vigil over the bones of the master he had failed to protect... a literal monument to his own everlasting shame.
Then, on one nondescript day, a sad but determined yordle girl carrying a mighty Demacian crown stopped in the shadow of a great statue to rest. Hidden in plain sight from his unsuspecting visitor, Galio studied the forlorn yordle. She looked as though she too shouldered a tremendous burden. As quietly and as stoically as she had arrived, she departed in the direction of Demacia. This encounter lit a spark in Galio's eye. Remembering the cause that his master had died defending, Galio arose from his silent purgatory and followed in the wake of this brave creature. He had a new reason to live: to fight for the will of Demacia
Now sure, you can argue that he is already tied to Demacia, as Durand is Demacian. But Galio had no actual attachment to Demacia himself, only to his creator. He was solely devoted to his creator, as that was the entire reason he himself was created. Were it not for the interaction with the old Poppy, Galio would still be wallowing in his own despair in the Howling Marsh, forever frozen in time.
I'm not saying the new story is bad. In fact, the new story has a lot more depth to it, and I believe is better overall. But it's also not impossible to simply enhance and improve old backstories/lore either. The old Poppy's lore could have easily been improved, without destroying the interactions between her and other champions.
Granted, I'm sure this is entirely a moot point, as the Journal of Justice and Judgements are gone entirely(which I believe was a bad decision), but it still upsets me when even something small in lore get changed that it breaks apart other lore.
And that, is my gigantic wall of text rant about changing lore.
