Can you say the same, Riot?

Dawngate's Story Was One of the Most Engaging in MOBAs

What is the League of Legends?

Before you answer, let me ask you this instead:

Who are the League of Legends?

Is Azir an emperor that wishes only to return Shurima? and if he succeeds, what shall he do afterwards? And why does any of that involve beating the stuffing out of a six year old from Noxus?

Lissandra has lost to Ashe.... I think, your lore is still being cough changed. What shall she and Trundle do now? Trundle leads an army of Trolls, are they actually doing anything?

Your characters exist, but are they actually alive?

Do they have preferences?

Did Veigar compose music while imprisoned to retain at least some of his sanity, creating pieces such as Tiny Masterpiece of Evil?

What does Master Yi actually say to his apprentice outside of solid training?

Who wrote the legend of Amumu?

Zilean hasn't actually tried speaking with Vel'Koz, when will they, and will the scientifically prone Vel'Koz react well or try to make him explode?

Riddle me this:

Are your characters alive, or do you just want more mechanics?

Linked is the last Dawngate newspiece, for Comparison and what I mean by "alive".

I hope you'll find some glass in those ashes.

Edit: Summoners are still here, but the Institute is gone.

@Riot I swear on my life, If you tell me the summoners are acting like a group of children asking each other "who would win in a fight; Cass or Garen?", then I swear on the spirit of Ruin, I will stop playing right now.

Edit 2: 1000 views. 5 hours and 15 minutes before the Dawngate closes in Atlantic Canada.

Edit 3: 2500 views. 2 hours before the Dawngate closes. Riot, stop ignoring me.

Edit 4: 4100 views. The Dawngate has closed. It's been a day, I'm certain a Rioter has found this at least once now.

What was Zac made for? Does Warwick gain control over his powers? Does Soraka gain her place back with the stars? Does Zyra start to like humans? Does Lulu like Veigar, and does she bring him to the fields as well? Does Alister ever find any other beings like him? How does Iriela gain her powers? How was Gnar trapped in ice and why was he freed now? Where did Evelynn come from? Do Graves and TwistedFate ever make up? Does Nami help Fizz with his search for his people? How are Blitzcrank's rights as an individual going? Why does Oriana not like Victor? Does Kog'Maw ever get full? Who is the king or queen of Noxus and why are they not fighting in the League of Legends? Do we ever get to look at Jax's days with a weapon? What about Janna's sad backstory? Who shot Miss Fortune's mom and tried to kill Miss Fortune? Does Gangplank have any enemies we might need to know about? How is Teemo and Tristana's relationship going? Is Shyvana a dragon that wishes to be human, being half human she was raised to be a dragon but just always wanted to be human? Does Shen eventually side with Zed or does Zed get defeated? Has Kennen ever been thought about by the Yordle's? Who framed Yasuo for murder, was it Riven? Is Swain a good guy or a bad guy? Do Sejuani and Ashe ever make up? How is Tryndamere and Ashe's relationship? Do they even have an heir? Where is Annie from, again and why do not hear from there much? What was it that gave Rammus powers? Where did Taric become a gem knight now that he's not of another world? Does Renekton ever gain back his sanity and make amends with Nasus? Why didn't Xerath go mad? Does anyone else have powers like Sona? Or an instrument like hers?

Important questions.

Riot's lore team is by far their weakest. Indy games have better lore. The level of detail and attention given to their world and champions is on par with what you should expect of a middle school child who likes to write little stories. I truly do think this, this is no exaggeration. The lore team is utter trash.

Riot had a truly unique idea with the league, and Runtera had the most potential Ive ever seen. Don't know why they just threw it away like that. Its just sad as hell. Whenever I think of this story, ill always stick with the League pretty much regardless of whatever they add. It just makes for a more dynamic story.

Well, we used to have a Journal of Justice. I think it died for the sake of eSports...

Reymonade2/5/2015, 5:50:26 PM9 votes

A few nonths ago, Riot changed the lore at it's very base. They removed the league. So now, tell me how would it be possible to adapt many years of lore in a few months?

Bat Bot2/5/2015, 6:48:51 PM9 votes

I think the direction of the lore is that the champions no longer exist in the same time frame or same levels of power in lore anymore. Imagine Valoran having an entire vivid history, filled with historic characters (Darius, Sion, Jarvan) great folklore (Braum) and horrific stories (Twitch).

The league would be a compilation of these 'legends' taking them out of their setting and having their strengths put into the arena. Each character would have its own story, independent of the entire web, or perhaps tied to a few or many of the other characters. This model would allow for tremendous more flexibility and make it much easier to explain the wildly varied power levels of champions (Sivir compared to say, Zilean or Xerath).

I'm imagining that down the road they'll do a Noxius vs Damacia event, an Ionian event, and a Void event where they explore the lore of each area and rewrite the history and motivations of each character. In turn making the lore seem like a gaze into the history of another world.

With the regular lore being removed is this now the new canon?

Riot abandoned their lore department a long time ago when they disbanded the JoJ and practically deleted all champion bio's. They obviously put all their chips into eSports and their LCS leagues. If you are still wanting top quality lore out of this game you should probably save your time and move on.

That's my harsh but honest opinion, friend.

Jeddy0172/5/2015, 7:29:54 PM6 votes

Maybe & hopefully, one day Riot will be able to say the same.Once Riot as a company, specifically the lore team, stop dicking around with the lore. But right now,HELL NO.

Man,if Dawngate wasn't closing down I would jump off this ship just for the lore on that ship.

I Main Swain2/5/2015, 10:23:13 PM5 votes

honestly, the lore team has done a pretty bad job imo. don't get me wrong, the stories they write are well done, but when I go to see a champion bio I am not looking for a story about a single specific moment in their life, I want to know who they are and why they are who they are. also, now that they have removed the league of legends itself, there is no central tie. these are all just some random people fighting in this random, coincidentally high quality battle arena for no reason and magically come back to life after they die every time for some mysterious reason. it turned the game from being part of a story to being just a game, nothing else.

imo they should make it so that upon reaching level 30 you can either choose a nation (noxus, demacia, shadow isle, etc.) or you can take a questionnaire sort of deal and they take that and your champ pool/most played champs and use that to determine what nation you are a part of. just a rough idea, but I think the basis of it sounds frikin awesome.

I played dawngate. And I only played uhh what was her name.. Basically looked like red riding hood version of olaf honestly.. uh.. fiona? Fiora? Fieora? fuck man. so bad with my memory.. Anyway I played her alot before they went to open beta and then gutted her kit...

I only played her. Personally never cared about backstory. But I did really enjoy hearing the interactions between characters. always have. Imo thats what makes the character feel alive to me. When they interact with eachother and feed off eachothers energy. But I guess I'm really simple to please if all it takes is a 10-5 VA lines to satisfy me.

Suck Your Tilts2/5/2015, 10:07:47 PM1 votes

Just stop talking lmao, this game is fine as it is. It's a competitive game now, there is no need for lores. Mechanics>Story. You're just stuck in bronze and have no potential.

Random Task2/6/2015, 1:14:03 AM1 votes

Hmm.........one of these games, is shutting down in 4 hours PST..............the other is racking billions of dollars in.

The5lacker2/6/2015, 2:37:04 AM1 votes

First, don't go "Riot stop ignoring me" like a child. They are under no obligation to answer your inane rambling.

Second, Dawngate is shutting down. I don't think holding up as an exemplar of the genre is particularly intelligent. You're comparing League to a game that has failed.

Face it: Any perpetual multiplayer experience with constant, resetting matches cannot have the traditional narrative you so desperately crave. Stop throwing a tantrum and deal with reality. League cannot tell a story. It can have a setting. It can have characters. But by its very nature it is impossible for a story to actually develop, because stories take place over time and League exists in a sort of pseudo-stasis.

League of Legends isn't an RPG you imbecile, it's a Fighting Game. Fighting games don't do stories well: What they do well is expressions of characters.

Myrddin2/6/2015, 9:21:08 AM1 votes

because having "alive" characters really did well for dawngate
