Wishlist of lore advancements/improvements I want to see for 2020
I decided before the lore video for the new season that Riot comes out with sometime soon (similar to last year's at the start of season 9) I should put some of my own hopes for each region in the lore out here. Some regions are in need of more love than others (Bandle City lul), but IF each region is going to get a major expansion or progression in 2020, these are some of my top wishes for each. Keep in mind that some regions may be as simple as expanding on a cool idea, while others have entire plotlines which are either in limbo or have never made sense and need to be expanded upon. These are just my opinions of course. Alphabetical order to make it easy, it's going to be a long one so that will make it easier to find your favorite region if you don't care as much. :)
Bandle City: https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/6/68/Bandle_City_Crest.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/340?cb=20190415230719 I don't think it's controversial to say that Bandle City needs a massive amount of work. If yordles are supposed to be the fae of this world, why do so many of them use tech? Why do they become so obsessed with the first thing they lay eyes on in Runeterra (Kled with Noxus expansion, Kennen consumed with being a stone faced master, Poppy becoming obsessed with Demacia and Orlon's hammer, etc.) My wish for this region isn't a singular request: we really need Riot to come at Bandle City from multiple angles to really flesh out the region and make it feel like more than a cool easter egg that gets stuffed in the back of books and forgotten about. The recent Lulu and Tristana story DID seem to introduce Bandlewoods being destroyed as a central conflict of the region, but we really need a lot more content here. Mass yordle VU coupled with lore when?
Bilgewater: https://universe-meeps.leagueoflegends.com/v1/assets/images/factions/bilgewater_splash.jpg Ahh, the first region in the new lore that felt like an actual place. My wish for Bilgewater is this: progression. After Shadow and Fortune, we haven't really heard much from this region. We know Miss Fortune is trying to gain power. We know Gangplank is being sneaky. We know the natives worship sea monsters. We know Pyke was brought back by a sea god (allegedly, it's not technically in the lore but his voice lines were clearly written under the pretext that people knew). While I really do want some more explorations into the fantastical world of the sea monsters that exist in this world, perhaps with a sea monster champion, a longer story about Pyke's resurrection, or an explanation into the ancient religion of the indigenous people, if a single wish must be fulfilled it's that the MF/Gangplank/criminal overlord of Bilgewater plot needs to be moved forward. It's basically been in limbo for 5 years at this point, minus some teasers here and there. It could even make a cool comic, Bilgewater doesn't have one of those yet.
Demacia: https://universe-meeps.leagueoflegends.com/v1/assets/images/factions/demacia_splash.jpg Demacia is arguably the region with the best upkeep, although that could just be recency bias since the release of Sylas at the start of last year. We already know a Demacia book is being written and we already have lots of potential stories set up. My biggest wish is that the story will be cleaned up and made more cohesive. We still have pre-Sylas lore with Lux and Garen battling Nocturne, Lux meeting Galio, Jarvan's interactions with Shyvana, and other stories that are all confirmed as canon yet don't fit into the timeline anymore. The Nocturne story shows Lux with her staff being sent by the Illuminators to handle a threat, yet still trying to be sneaky with her magic around Garen. Jarvan told Sylas he loved a special magical someone once, who is probably Shyvana, yet that story being set before the mage revolution feels disjointed. The Illuminators are in canon stories but haven't shown themselves in more recent stuff. Is the Nocturne story just set after the current arc is finished and Lux comes back home? That seems anticlimactic having plot points set after the current major conflict. Just some cleanup would be nice, I'm also excited to see the story moving forward but we already knew that would happen.
Frejlord: https://www.mobafire.com/images/champion/skins/landscape/rammus-freljord.jpg Frejlord could arguably be broken down into three subregions. It is a massive place with a huge breadth of people, similar to Ionia, but unlike Ionia all these subregions have a massive depth of lore already written for them. Winter's Claw alone has a similar amount of lore to other major regions which Riot has kept up with pretty well. For this region I have two big wishes: one for progression and one for backstory. For progression I simply mean that I'm digging the stories and want them to move forward (hopefully without one subregion falling behind the others). For backstory I mean I would love some insight into why the Frejlord is such a different place from the other regions. What are the origins of the demigods like Ornn and Volibear? What are the massive Watcher-esque creatures from the card game? Why are most magically inclined people Iceborne or Stormborne where on the rest of Runeterra there is a giant rainbow of possible abilities? What is north of the Frejlord? There is a Riot man named Odin somewhere who is largely responsible for Frejlord having such awesome lore. He nailed not only the delivery of information about the region, but made the old gods feel like an old folktale. In this world however, the old gods are real and actively interact with the world, and I just want more information about them because they are so cool.
Ionia: https://cdnb.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/010/260/459/large/joon-ahn-ionia-graveyard-2400.jpg?1523464683 Ionia is a vast region with tons of interlinked storylines. Yet my wish for this one is pretty simple because something was introduced that I don't remember reading about until somewhat recently when I checked out the Realms of Runeterra book: a war with titans. It seems that in the distant past, Ionians battled with celestial titans and came out victorious. In some places of Ionia, the corpses and ancient weapons of these beings still exist. This is awesome. I must know more.
Ixtal https://universe-meeps.leagueoflegends.com/v1/assets/images/ixtal_splash.jpg Ixtal is another region like Bandle City which is going to need quite a bit of work to get up to the bar of quality set by other regions. I actually think Qiyana introduced before her region as a source for future chaos was a good thing, but there is also an issue with the only character in your region only talking about herself. I know some other champions were retrofitted into the jungles around Ixtal, but only Qiyana and possibly Malphite (who may get a VGU and have his lore changed in the future anyways) exist currently. Simply put: more content. Interesting characters in the state of politics, a look into what an elemental mage nation must do to stay safe, civil wars if they've happened, connections with the dragons, etc. This region has a lot of potential, it just isn't quite there yet.
Noxus https://universe-meeps.leagueoflegends.com/v1/assets/images/factions/noxus_splash.jpg Noxus has more vectors for potential future stories than perhaps any other region. I know that may be a stretch due to the size of Ionia and Frejlord, but there really is a lot going on. Kingdoms being annexed, a second war with Ionia, potential rebellions in outer kingdoms, a war with Demacia, a war with the Winter's Claw, internal conspiracies to overthrow the Trifarix, the Black Rose's obsession with powerful magical artifacts, and many more stories that are interesting enough to be the sole focus for the region exist. Similarly to my wish for the Frejlord, I hope we can get at least a little lore progression on each of these plot points without any falling too far in the rear mirror. I would also really like to know how Swain captured his demon, that seems like an important part of the story and I've written before how it's lame it was brushed over.
Piltover https://universe-meeps.leagueoflegends.com/v1/assets/images/factions/image-gallery/piltover-zindeloruneterra.jpg I considered combining Piltover and Zaun because they are now more connected than ever. It's been this way since Camille with them sharing a section in Realms of Runeterra and sharing most of the recent long-form stories. I decided there's more than enough to go around, however. Firstly a wish for both regions: please make more long form stories that include characters and locations from each city within them. Seeing the contrast is just really cool and these feel like actual places. For Piltover specifically: more stories about how they interact with other regions would actually be really cool. Piltover and Zaun feel like this place completely cut off from the rest of the fantasy world. Even Bandle City feels more connected to the greater fantasy world of Runeterra than these regions. We do know Piltover is cutting down trees which is cool, but I'd also like to see how they trade with other nations. Do other places even understand the technology Piltover can export? Has Noxus tried to annex the cities, seeing as how they have taken over places all around northern Shurima? Are the massive sea monsters/ocean dwelling gods angry with the massive canal that has been constructed? Can people even be born with magical abilities in this place separated entirely from nature? Piltover is one of my personal favorite regions, so seeing it be more integrated into the crazy stuff that happens in the rest of Runeterra would be cool.
Shadow Isles https://universe-meeps.leagueoflegends.com/v1/assets/images/factions/shadow-isles_splash.jpg The Shadow Isles are an interesting place. At the start of the 2019 I would've said the region was abandoned by Riot similarly to Bandle City, as no lore had come out since Yorick's 2016 rework. The Echoes Left Behind, Senna, and Realms of Runeterra have largely helped the region become a more fleshed out place however, and I've been pretty happy with everything. My wish here is easy: I want more information on the Ruined King and I'd love him to finally be added to the game. I know some of it has been on purpose to build mystery, but the amount of information on the Ruined King has been so little that most people just assumed he wasn't important to the current lore. I myself had a theory that Mordekaiser (when he was on the Isles instead of in Noxus) kept the depressed Ruined King in a prison and tortured him to use his power, but apparently I misread the situation. Not only is the Ruined King still an important part of the story, he actually is the king of sorts on the Shadow Isles despite there being literally nothing about him explained for years in both the current lore and old retconned lore. Hopefully the new Ruined King game will expand on him further, and I'm expecting him to be released in League as cross-promotion around the same time that game comes out. I'd love to know more about this dude that always seemed to be more of a teaser or interesting lore factoid than an actual character in the universe.
Shurima https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/6/65/Azir_RiseoftheAscended_Concept_02.png/revision/latest?cb=20181130204702 Ahh, the image above may stir something in you, correct? If you're an old League fan you must surely remember the insane hype of Azir's return and the massive lore event surrounding it. Cinematics, a game mode, a new champion release, old champion VU's (Nasus), future plans hinted at, etc. The problem is this: literally nothing is happening in this god damn region. The story took a tiny baby step forward when Taliyah was released, but ultimately the battle lines were drawn over half a decade ago and we're still waiting for something to happen. My wish is this: for something to happen. We've recently had Darkins reemerging, we have the Void in southern Shurima, Setaka was quote "cocooned" by the Void in Where Icathia Once Stood and may return as a Void corrupted Ascended champion one day, and many other recent Shuriman stories have been set up. It's hard to care about any of this new stuff however, when the war for Shurima's throne has been on the verge of beginning for 6 years. Azir released in 2014. Please Riot, bring some progression to this story.
Targon https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/f/fc/Aurelion_Sol_He_Has_Returned.png/revision/latest?cb=20170325053123 Targon has always been an amazing region to me. It always borders on being my favorite region, but isn't updated quite enough and doesn't have quite the level of detail I want to fully cross that line. For example: the Realms of Runeterra book doesn't have a Targon story despite it being a fully featured region in every other way (rather than a one page teaser like Bandle City, Ixtal, and the Void). With recent Aphelios and Soraka stories along with the great Taric lore previously, the human side of Targon is actually feeling pretty good and I'm digging the direction it's going. My wish is this though: I really do want to learn more about the celestial race in the heavens above the mountain and why they even care about Runeterra. Aurelion called them a spacefaring race so they likely didn't start on Runeterra, so why do they care so much about managing the life here? Are they the ones who created the planet? Are they trying to claim the World Runes after another race died while building the planet (something hinted at in unofficial channels but not in any story)? Were they the same faction as the celestial titans the Ionians fought, or did they fight the titans with Ionia? Why do they merge with humans to influence the world rather than just orbital striking the evil in question with their cosmic magic? In Twilight of the Gods, Ta'anari describes physically going to the holy city in the sky and riding dragons around, so we know there is a physical place where the gods live somewhere. I am so fascinated by the celestial half of Targon and I just wish we knew more about their society and motivations. Additionally, I'd love to see more primordial celestials who aren't connected to Targon like Aurelion Sol, we know they exist out there.
The Void https://universe-meeps.leagueoflegends.com/v1/assets/images/kassadin-color-story-bg.jpg The Void is a weird place. It seems extremely fleshed out and has connections in tons of places in the League universe, but doesn't get a lot of lore directly. Part of this is because most Void stuff boils down to monsters that want to destroy everything, with the brains being the Watchers whose motivations we already fully understand. Another part is that even Void-related champions like Kassadin and Kai'sa feel more like Shuriman champions because physical beings can't really cross to the "real" Void. My wish for this is oddly specific and probably the least likely to happen out of this whole list, but I would be interested to see a Void monster who abandons his directive to destroy everything. We know Vel'koz is aware that he will be destroyed along with the rest of reality once the Watchers complete their mission, but imagine a new voidling champion who also realizes this fact but isn't okay with it? Not that this monster would become a good guy, but just that it would defect and go off into the woods to become part of the ecosystem or something. I dunno, sounds interesting to me at least but I could be off on this one.
Zaun https://lolstatic-a.akamaihd.net/frontpage/apps/prod/piltover/en_US/0d65273e55685b53b82f4f0ead52fc167a27f911/assets/img/share/zaun_1200x630.jpg Finally, Zaun. I already shared one half of my wish in Piltover's section (basically just that I want more stories where both cities play a big part) but Zaun has a lot going on that I would love to be explored. Firstly, I have no doubt after the recent story and cinematic that the cult of Urgot is still alive and well and I would love to see more of this group of people. Secondly, I'd be interested to see hextech crystals get sent to Zaun and essentially have a chembaron with access to a superweapon making demands of Piltover. Chemtech allows body augmentation and extreme strength, but hextech seems to be able to do literally anything including break time in some instances. It is far more powerful and has the x factor of magic, and I'd love to see some actual magic make its way down to this depressing undercity. Something else I'd be interested to learn more about is the prison mines below the Sump. I'm wondering if the Malphite story was a teaser for the fact that there may be a Void invasion that comes from under Zaun at some point, forcing the economic elite in Piltover to join forces with chembarons to repel the threat while simultaneously using the destruction as a means of jockeying for more control. Also, Ekko game hype. Action platformers are pretty cool.
