Reborn is great. So is Shurima.

The problem is, neither of them need the League (and by extension, the Summoners and Institute of War) to not exist in order for them to happen.

None of the lore stuff we've seen so far justifies the removal of the Institute of War. All of them could have happened in a universe where the League exists. Getting rid of the League feels like just a cheap copout when you continue to tell stories that would have happened EXACTLY the same way regardless of whether the League was there or not.

Retcons are an ABSOLUTE LAST RESORT for universes like the DC or Marvel universe where they've literally run out of stories to tell because of their characters' 50+ year runs. You haven't run out of stories yet; you've barely scratched the surface.

Either bring back the League or tell the story about how it fell.

To play devil's advocate, The Shurima story is based on there not being an Institute or League. Originally, Nasus and Renekton were not Ascended mortals. They were alien beings from another world. Nasus had been summoned to Runeterra by the Summoners. They plead for him to help them bring peace as Runeterra was awash in strife due to ongoing conflicts between Noxus and Demacia. Nasus had been busy saving his world from Renekton and power hungry peoples that sought the knowledge he guarded to threaten the peace, He agreed to stay on Runeterra and help because he could make a difference here where he was greater than many of the foes that threatened Valoran's peace.

Something has to change now for Nasus. If there are no Summoners, and no League. If he was born mortal in Shurima, somehow Ascended, and then Shurima fell to ruin. His job description will have changed after that. Now Shurima's ancient emperor, Azir, has resurrected and his mad brother, Renekton, has been freed from a long imprisonment. His interests will once again shift.

These are stories that are changing due to the removal of Summoners and the League.

While Nasus's old lore couldn't work with the removal of the IoW, the opposite does not hold true. The IoW did not need to be removed to make Nasus's new lore work.

The IoW is gone. Now Demacia and Noxus can go back to beating each other senseless as they always wanted. No more war-by-proxy in the League of Legends. No more pulling in interdimensional warriors to suss out their differences for them.

Yes. Yes it is gone. That in no way negates my point however.

Furthermore, considering the direction the story had been going with the IoW before it was discontinued, things were well on their way to an all-out conflict between Demacia and Noxus anyway even with the League being a thing.

Of course, the entire reason why the IoW was supposed to prevent a Demacia-Noxus war is because everyone pretty much concluded that one more Demacia-Noxus war would blow up the world, but whatever. No big loss apparently.
