TL;DR: I didn't like it :(

Now before you throw rotten tomatoes at me, please let me explain for I have created mini head-cannon for me.

First off I like the way the word "Darkin" has a new meaning, Ascended Shurimian warriors who were corrupted by the Void-war and ultimately betrayed, killed or enslaved by Targonians and their previous enslaved mortals Zoe Pantheon .

But I don't think that this new definition suits the appearance of Aatrox, Rhaast and Varus.
Besides of not having animal-characteristics , just like most ascended , their demonic appearance makes me think of them being from another region, or even another dimension, raiding Runeterra but not being mindless killing machines, I can imagine the darkins teaching humans about the art of war, helping them with their battles (magelords-protectorates) and even trying to defend them from a Void invasion, all concluding to them being betrayed by mortals in the same way they were exterminating the fallen Ascended...

So, in my head-cannon, the word "Darkin" has 2 meanings, the first one is used when someone is referring to the ancient Ascended guardians of Shurima, and the second one when someone is talking about the Demonic race from another world that were imprisoned when the Ascended were being exterminated...

Now you may ask, who is aware of this difference? Not the common folk, since they would combine the oblivion that Aatrox and Rhaast brought with the tyrannic nature of the corrupted Ascended, leaving the real "Darkins" a bigger mystery for our explorer Ezreal to discover.. :D

All in all, although I think the new "Darkin" lore has some potential, I believe it just makes the real Darkins, the ones we've known all these years, less unique and special....

This has been my TED-talk

The ascended used flesh magic to warp their bodies. After being sealed they could not return to their original shape. Their hosts had their flesh torn apart and reshaped, constantly decaying which is why aatrox and rhaast have such demonic features.

Good thing to point out too, the whole Magelords and Protectorate seems highly unlikely to be canon anymore.

Can't say I'll miss that aspect of connecting the Summoners Rift with any prime lore.
