@Riot Narrative Team: "Put Up, or Shut Up"

edit:** Wait! Please don't shut up. I'd actually really like to have a dialogue!**

Riot, is there a reason why the narrative lead at Riot remains a secret? It's starting to seem like the position doesn't even exist.

From what I see on these boards, the recent lore retcon left a pretty sour taste in the mouths of many League of Legends Fans.

Personally, I find it very disappointing that Riot would abandon Runeterra's history just because they felt it became a bit to difficult to write about. (that seems to be their position).

Personally, and from what I've seen of public opinion, I would think many players would agree with me that the new lore direction has not yielded a higher or even equal level of lore quality than what we had previously. (with the exception of the new Sion lore, which was done pretty awesomely, yet was admittedly just a re-envisioning of his old lore, with Swain coming off as a much weaker leader than he did before).

The Shurima event felt really lame to me as a player, despite the Azir hype (he didn't appeal to me as a character very much, as we didn't get to see much of his personality outside of Rioters telling us that he supposedly had a lot of pride, although he didn't really show that with any kind of action in his lore).

The Freljiord event was a bit better. I really disliked most of the retcons, but ARAM as permanent new game mode kind of saved it. Even though the new lore and the lore retcons felt awful to me.

Riot, as a humble player, nay, a proud summoner, I ask you to look back to your roots and reconsider the course that you are taking the League of Legends lore in.

If the "League of Legends" isn't even a part of the lore in the game League of Legends, then something is horribly wrong.

Don't ask "why does game play need to be tied to the narrative?", but go further and ask how can gameplay be better tied to the narrative?

Riot, it's time to "Put up or Shut Up". (Actually it's a bit late. You should have "Put Up" when you initally announced the lore retcon. You're a bit late now. But whatever, we'll forgive you if you fix things)

You've made it clear that most of the old lore is non-canon now. Put up! Show us what you have to replace it in a timely fashion, or "shut up" and give us back the Runeterra we came to know and love.

It's years overdue Riot. Many Rioters have admitted this themselves. Put up or shut up. If you aren't ready yet (for god knows what reason, after having years of a lore drought) then make it a priority.

Riot has shown it can deliver awesome quality lore on a bi-weekly pace. There isn't any excuse why we should wait months for lore updates that feel like they are of lower quality than what we had in the early days of LoL.

Aren't you trying to evolve and improve? Because I think that most players would agree that Riot has taken a BIG step backwards when it comes to both its lore quality and quantity.

And now they've gone and replaced Shadow Isles champion lores with WIP on the PBE.

They seem to have an incredible amount of faith in our patience. Or they have no concern with destroying something without replacing it properly. First it was the Journal and the Judgements, now it's this.

Instead of retconing the institute out they should of just gutted it like they did to Olaf or they nocturn.

In other words why not have a lore event where the institute basically is destroyed or removed as a strong political player because corruption (hey isn't that why the journal was shut down?). That way they can still reference it but have a reason for people like lee sin and nocturn to exist... And now people who were locked up like fiddle have an excuse to be out

Oh man ... they're not gonna do either of those things. I hope you know what you're going to do if Riot picks option 3, like they've been doing for years.

Put up: They've got a vision of a certain quality and standard that they're working towards. You might not agree with them about it. http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/story-art/YMoEEJUH-well-its-ff-from-narrative-champion-lore-updates-on-website?comment=0014

As I mentioned, we're currently hard at work on some Shurima-related stories (not to mention future content), and we want to get the first of them out to you just as soon as we can properly finalize them. If we cannot solve the tech issue within the necessary timeframe, we will get the stories to you in analternative way, perhaps even through this board.

Shut up: You can trace Riot's objective over the years. It paints a direct line to where we are now. Judgments ended, JoJ ended, Twisted Treeline moved to Shadow Isles, Proving Grounds changed into Howling Abyss, lack of Institute lore, JoJ removed from client. It doesn't look like they're turning back, not when they've been working towards this for so long.

So ... yeah. What's your point? If you're just voicing your opinion, Riot has responded, and that response was: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/story-art/YMoEEJUH-well-its-ff-from-narrative-champion-lore-updates-on-website?comment=001000030000

We need to be able to tell great stories about our champions in a really robust way. Some folks will disagree with how we approach it. That's okay. We get it. At the same time, we're excited by the possibilities. This is a journey, and we're committed to it.

So, I'd say it's time to look at option 3. What's your response to option 3?

Your commitment to letting your displeasure be heard is admirable...and a little bit disturbing. I think we get it by now, Impetual. You're not happy. You, TerraRising, Philomelle, and several others have been spearheading this vocal opposition. That's perfectly understandable. Heck, I'm not thrilled with the situation, either. But I am going to reserve judgement until we see what they're cooking in the kitchen. They know they've got a lot to prove. I'll just wait to see if they pull through. So forgive me if I don't join you in the glorious Crusade.

League was pretty unique in how it incorporated the player into the story as a summoner, and how its politics and champs tied everything together. That is why its so frustrating. They had a huge awesome point of originality in the genre, and now want to erase it. Absolutely baffling. It wasn't just their story. It was OUR story. We were part of the in game world! You can't take a novel for example, somehow make the reader the main character, then erase the whole plot and say hey don't worry its still gonna be good. You're just not a character anymore, and none of those things ever happened.

As for other games, I find myself playing Smite alot. While it is lacking the overall "Why are these people killing each other" plot point, they do keep hinting at it with increasing frequency so I'm hoping more will come about from it. Though each playable god comes with a nice narrated, semi animated story about their personal lore, and they're well known characters in various world mythologies. So, overarching theme or not yet, they're characters I can and do already deeply know what they are about.

Meanwhile League takes their characters I grew to know and care about, and guts them into standard fantasy types.

Any efforts put into writing decent lore were scrapped at the beginning of season 3 i.e the "new" Evelynn lore.

And no, they didn't take a BIG step back when it comes to lore. It's even worse. Riot took a BIG step back to the Subway around the corner, because they got tired of listening to people throw temper-tantrums and found that they needed some lunch. It may also be where they're currently getting their inspiration.

Can't you hear Phreak announcing the next champ now? "Meatball, the Five Dollar Foot-Long".

Of all the things currently wrong with this game, writing an essay on your disappointment with the lore ranks at the bottom of the totem pole. If you're not on a Korean pro-team, Riot doesn't have time for you or your problems. Sorry.

So …… I love the lore a ton, and have since I started playing league. This retcon really pissed me off at first, but then I realized that THEY HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING WITH IT WHATSOEVER. OTHER THAN THE INITIAL ANNOUNCEMENT, THERE'S NO RUBBING IT IN OUR FACES. So what I decided to do was carry on as if they hadn't ever decided to retcon all of Runeterra, the IoW and League. Helped me a lot since now I'm not getting pissed off over where jax and fiddlesticks and nocturne come from now.

You are not quiet informed on this, what riot did is get rid of the Istituite of War whichs was preventing the story to improve since due to the IoW the lore was GAMEPLAY tied meaning they couldn´t expand it on other directions other that related to IoW events.

Getting rid of IoW allowed riot to retcon the entire lore thus allowing them to improve it beyond any limitations which were imposed by the presence of IoW.

The Lore team has many and many persons the decisions are not based in a single person and they also do hear community feedback and for what i recall the lore will come in 2015 or later since we are talking about retconing over 100 champions which is a lot if you ask me.

This new lore is separated from gameplay (which i mentioned above) in this way we will see a lot of more events lore-wise instead gameplay-tied the new Sion lore opened a whole new world with so many questions (because his new lines with other champions).

Ty Philomelle. My name starts with Onyx, so if you're wondering who the hell invited you, well... it's me :)

Keeping the link. It was nice to meet you ^^

And ty for the game suggestions. Should have thought looking there first!

Keep up the good work with Factions, CCT.

I think that the retcon may not be so bad after all. Life goes on. I've come to accept that the stories I liked are no more.

So, best of luck to the new lore team! Old lore souls such as us were but a vocal minority and I know we've said some pretty mean things.

Please, forgive us.

Psst. Be more involved with the community from now on, m'kay?

Cheers! And best of luck!
