Ionia. A land of magic. A land of balance. A land of light. But not always a land of peace. Just as there are creatures within Ionia who seek to upset its order, so too are there those who fight to preserve it; Arrows of Protection, hunters of monsters. Valmar and Kai are two such hunters.
The Nistaram Forest, Ionia ?: Loose, damn you ?: Not yet...
?: Hey! Over here! MAAARGGHH
Valmar! Skkluutch Move swift as the wind... ....and let flesh and steel strike as one FSSSCHK I serve the great balance. With heart and steel. In thought and deed. Very poetic Kai. Now are you going to help me before I bleed to death.
Kai: The thing barely scratched you. Valmar: Trust me, it doesn't feel that way. Valmar: Risky move going for the high cut to the beast's throat. Kai: Do not talk to me about risky moves. What were you thinking leaping out of the tree like that. Valmar: I was giving you an opening. Kai: You think I needed one? Valmar: I don't know. I just reacted. Kai: That has always been your problem Val, You react with thinking...
Kai?: How much longer? Valmar: Smells like it's ready. Kai: No, I mean how much longer until we reach Pallas? Valmar: It's a day's ride to my mother's house. Assuming your stitching holds. Kai: There is not a surgeon in Ionia can match my skill with a needle. You could wrestle the spirit walker and those stitches would not split. Valmar: Feels much better now. It's not even painful. Kai: The serpent leaf poultice dulls the pain, but not the mind. Valmar?: Serpentleaf? Wait isn't that poisonous? Kai: It can be if it is not picked correctly. Valmar: And you know how to pick it correctly? Kai: Yes. It is a beautiful flower, but is a predator that lures insects with its scent and color. Kai: It paralyzes its prey, then slowly devours them. Kai?: Beautiful and lethal. The perfect hunter. Valmar?: But there are creatures that mimic the serpentleaf prey. Immune to the plant's string, they eat it from the inside when the leaves close. Kai?: The roles of the predator and prey are reversed. KaiValmar?: Just so, even the greatest hunters are not invulnerable. They can be killed and should have a care what prey they hunt. KaiValmar?: I understand. But do you remember what the seer at Shouten told us? Kai: Yes. Valmar: Tell me. Kai: He said our souls would be as one.
Kai?: You are sure? Valmar: Of course I'm sure. My mother will love you. The Hirana Academy doesn't give it's highest honor to stupid people... Kai: What is she does not like me? Valmar: Do you love me! Kai: Yes! Valmar: Then she'll like you. Kai?: Welcome to Pallas. Kai: I thought your mother was the one being honored? Valmar: She is, but the villagers are very proud of me. Mother tells anyone who'll listen of my exploits. Kai: Your exploits? Valmar: Our exploits. What do you think I put in all the letters I send her? Kai: You tell her about the monsters? Mom: That he does slayer Kai. But I often wish he'd leave out some of the gorier details. I don't really need to know how badly a gutted Carndtalin stinks. Mom: Welcome home, my son.
Kai?: I had a revered uncle who won the Jade Owl from the academy at Hirana, but I never thought to see an Amber Rose. Mom: Nor I, the final debate was hard-fought against one of Shojin's finest masters of rhetoric. Young Kid: Don't let her fool you, Kai. I've seen the scrolls. She crushed him. Made him look like a half-witted novice. (nvm above was Val) Kai: 'Modesty is a shining light,' Val 'It prepares the mind to receive knowledge, and the heart truth.' Mom: You know the Navorian Apologues? Kai: I am from Navori. My father read them to me as a child. Mom: My son has chosen his heart-light wisely! Young kid1: Is that really a Vulkodalk horn? Did you really slay an iron-back? Kid2: What about the Murk-wolf of Shon-ga? Was it really as big as they say? Kai?: Do you think we should tell them? I'm not sure their fragile little hearts could stand it. Valmar: Maybe just one...
Kai: So. How did I do? Valmar: Terrible. She hates you. Kai: Hahah. Is that what she said to you before we came upstairs? Valmar: No, she loves you. That was something else. Valmar?: She says that we have to take the beast's horn to the Aluxan Cage as an offering. Kai?: The temple of the cliff? Valmar: Yes. Every traveller brings something that shaped them. It's said to strengthen the temple's magic. ?: Uncounted aeons have I waited. x: So know this son of Ionia.. x: That sound you hear? x: It is the bliss of renewal.
Valmar?: I had forgotten how high this damn place is. Kai: We have climbed higher. Remember the Aeries of Sirin? Valmar: I'd rather not... Kai?: What's wrong? You look pale. Valmar: I slept... badly. Kai?: I only woke when you knocked over that helmet. Why do you even have that ugly thing? Valmar: It's a trophy hunted from a pair of Noxian war-scouts. Kai: What happened to the other scout? Valmar: Slippery bastard sailed back to Noxus. Kai?: We have come a long way, you and I. Valmar: Further than any could guess. Kai?: You will walk the rest of the way with me. Valmar: Always.
Kai?: Mother Kaviella told me the carvings here can move a soul to tears. Valmar: There's a lot here can do that. Priest: Welcome back slayer Valmar. Valmar: Master Kobayashi, allow me to introduce my heart-light Kai. Priest: The horn of a Vulkodalk that once terrorized the forest dwellers of Nistaram. Priest: You killed a Vulkodalk? Kai: We both did. Priest: To fight as an Arrow of Protection is noble. Kai: We serve the great balance. Priest: Present your offering before the waters that bring life to us all. Priest: I like him. Valmar: I love him. Priest: I know, and that will make this all the more painful for you. Valmar: Make what more painful? Priest: You must leave him, Valmar. Walk away from all you feel. Priest: And do it know or you will know pain like no other. Valmar: What? Why? Priest: The magic of this place is ancient. It weaves the past and the future and can renew that which is broken. Priest: Such power keeps that which is chained within slumbering and offers glimpses of things that have not yet come to pass. Valmar: What have you seen? Priest: It is what I have felt. Your soul's despair as it wanders lost and alone in darkness. The pain of unimaginable loss... Priest: The life an arrow is fleet, built of nothing but direction and intent. Valmar: I know the damn oath! Priest: Then you already know the truest arrow flies alone...
Valmar: I serve the Great Balance. With heart and steel. In thought and deed. Valmar: Noxus... AAIERGH Valmar: Kai! Kai?: Noxian dogs! You dare desecrate this holy place. (Nevermind that was Valmar)
Kai: Valmar! Kai: Valmar! GNNNNAGH! Kai: I serve the great balance... Kai: With heart and steel... Kai: In thought and deed.
Valmar: Kai! x: ... Ever is blood a call to my kind Valmar: No! Kai! x: Vengeance is the hunger... x: ... fed by slaughter. Kai: Val...
x: Grief is the key... Kai: You have to run... Go while you still can. Valmar: No. I won't leave you. Kai: You... must. More will... come. Valmar: I can't... I can't lose you! x: ... Turned by loss. x: But to walk the darkest path. Valmar: No... don't go please... Kai: You will not... I am your... heart-light... Kai: ... I will always be with... you. Valmar: No... don't go please... (Earlier was out of place) Valmar: ...Don't leave me... I'm begging you... x: ...One needs only the glimmer of hope. Priest?: Valmar... don't. You must... not! It wants you... Valmar: You said the magic here can renew that which is broken. He is my heart-light and I have to try to save him. CRAAKOOM x: That sound you hear...
?:... is an arrow of retribution.
