How does Darkin corruption work exactly?

So I was thinking about it and how does it seem to work? I mean with Kayn he is slowly getting corrupted physically and Val and Kai had instantly gotten fused with Varus and are getting corrupted by their souls is there any way to prevent the corruption like if you just let go of the weapon would you lose the corruption after a certain time? And is the corrupting only for humans? Let's say the 4th Darkin was trapped in a dagger or some small weapon and was embedded into a bear would the Darkin be able to corrupt the bear and become some bear Darkin hybrid or would that just not work due to it not being a human or human like creature?

Most humans are taken over, physically and mentally, instantly. You need an exceptional force of will to resist a Darkin weapon. Kayn has a very strong force of will, and Kai and Val have the Power of LoveTM. So they won't get completely overtaken. I imagine the physical corruption differs from Darkin to Darkin. Aatrox and Rhaast seem to use a similar method of "spread from the weapon, pressing until you take over the host completely". Varus literally created a new body for him, Val, and Kai to all coexist in, although he's trying to oust Val and Kai from his body. While Kayn seems to have full control of his body (when he's not in Darkin Rhaast form, obviously), Varus seems to be the main leader of the body he has, with Kai and Val taking over at certain points.

Just some thoughts.
