The thing that bugs me most about the lore right now.

That fact that anything and everything cannot be talked about by narrative right now because spoilers.

Let me be clear. I can understand not talking about the next up and coming champion because of spoilers. I understand not being able to expand on recently released champs because of spoilers. What I hate is that narrative wont talk about champions that have been in the game for years, with an established back story that lore fans have come to love.

Like... what's that about? How is that fair to want to know what in the name of Gepetto is going on with certain champions right now who used to have an established set of lore can suddenly not be talked about because it would "spoil the surprise"?

If we want to know what is happening with Jax right now you can't tell us no. He is essentially deleted from the game because of the retcon and has nothing. There is no surprise that should be at risk of spoiling. He HAD lore. Give it back. He had an established story that readers and fans knew. You can't take that away and leave fans in the dark because it's going to spoil the fun for you, the narrative team.

It's absurd. It's like if suddenly CBS decided that they should just relaunch the entire Star Trek timeline but this time without the Federation. All those rules and morals and regulations are really getting in the way of all those super duper cool stories a bunch of new, freshly graduated writers wanna make badly narrated videos about. So the whole series is relaunched and all the characters, races and key storylines are invalidated.

Basically it's this: "Is Spock still a Vulcan? Riot Narrative: "WELL GOLLY GEE WE WOULDN'T WANNA SPOIL THAT!"

"... Is Picard still a character?" Riot Narrative: "HMMMMMM... I guess you'll have to wait and see! TEE HEE!"

"...Why is the Federation gone?" Riot Narrative: "Having a unique Government entity that upheld peace and diversity, that introduced a set of rules that were morally well-intentioned but not fully universal that created for interesting, dramatic story-telling, and was still flawed and possibly corrupt was WAAYYYYY to restricting. How could we write a coherent story with that in place?"

"When will all these new episodes come out? Riot Narrative: "No idea. We're having tech issues."

TL;DR: You can't spoil established lore. Give us that. Save your spoiler excuse for new content, not what should have been replaced the minute the retcon was announced.

So what you are saying is Riot's Narrative team announced an unexpected, despite being subtly foreshadowed by the gradual removal of all references to the Institute of War, change that substantially impacts the entire setting without offering any consultation in addition to being entirely unprepared to deliver the expectations they created?

At this point they need to start discussing what they're working on, spoilers be damned. The lore vacuum has gone on for far too long.

There's a fine line between wanting to create suspense and surprise the playerbase, and just straight incompetence.

Your Star Trek example is so spot on that I cannot upvote you enough. I think keeping the institute but developing its imperfections further - the idea of corruption and entities striving to take it down, would have been a fantastic option.

It's not about spoilers, it's about not being creative and not wanting to predict how the future champs will fit with the lore in the present. They avoid making compromises by being as eclectic as possible.

Agreed and +1, especially for the tl;dr.

Riot has no good reason for telling us that they can't discuss champions whose lore has been decimated by this shit retcon (Morgana and Kayle anybody? Why are they here now...?) and not give us a chance to weigh in and help with direction.

Who is Narrative producing lore for? Themselves, or the players they want *consuming *it?

Ever heard of an author that writes without their audience in mind at least a little bit? No, that's because they don't get published.

Only suggestion I can give is to read fiction/stories of actually good writers.

I don't know if you watch South Park, but the narrative team reminds me of their parody of George R. R. Martin, "It's coming soon. Wait for it. It's coming, really! But let me talk about schlongs for some hours first. Bard " Or rather, years, in this case.
