They stripped Kassadin's story and Malzahar's story of their relationship other than vague rumors. In the old lore, Kassadin was someone Malzahar wanted to become consumed by the Void and join him, so to goad Kassadin into going to the Void, he hurled his daughter into it. Immediately that established a hate relationship between Kassadin and Malzahar, and gives us a more human reason and understanding of Kassadin.
Their new lore is vague as hell. Kassadin's spent the better part of his bio discussing his name and the fact that he collected treasures. Malzahar's talked about his visions and ability to open the Void on Runeterra. There is no cross over between the two, as Malzahar's story doesn't even have him maliciously cross paths or plan to dick with Kassadin. But then Kassadin hearing a rumor suddenly pins all his hate on Malzahar and goes on a crusade. The personal vendetta and their relationship in the old lore is non-existent, and it just feels so much more hollow and less impactful than the old lore. It'd be the same as if my dog suddenly went missing and then me going on a rampage against the CEO of Maybelline if I read a news story that they did animal testing on dogs. It's just ridiculous and not very well put together. I usually commend the direction that the lore team goes, but their storytelling lately has been collapsing and of a particularly low quality.
