We know a lot more about the Iceborn

Specifically what sets them apart from other empowered humans. We know that the ritual isn’t a transformative one, Iceborn don’t get to stand under a sundisc or anything.

It seems more likely that the Iceborn are now the members of a warrior caste of the Freljord. We see that the religious identity of the Iceborn is heavily tied to both the Freljord and Lissandra herself. She being the one who founded the Iceborn/Frostguard.

I think it puts the Iceborn in a more interesting. Position than when compared to what we knew before. While originally the Iceborn were theorized to be the Freljordian answer to the Ascended of Shurima, we know can understand how the Iceborn comprise more of a holy order than a higher race.

I’m interested to see more of the tenants of Iceborn tradition, but what we’ve seen so far from the color story already illuminated a great deal more.

They're clearly more than just a warrior caste. This is made apparent in the new story where we're told that only an Iceborn could withstand the temperatures deep in the Howling Abyss, among other statements to their strength and durability. They're definitely more than just a holy order.

The ORIGINAL Iceborn may have undergone a ritual similar to the Sun Disc ritual. It's just that all current Iceborn are Iceborn by blood and the Ascended/Sunborn probably can't reproduce on account of being animals (Maybe a Rioter can enlighten us on what happens to Nasus' ... anatomy)
