Reminder That Nobody is 100% Pragmatic

A common complaint I've been seeing tossed around is about Swain's hair being long. While I am mostly indifferent to his haircut (although I do think he would rock a beard), the main reason I see given for why long hair is bad for him is that a pragmatic person wouldn't have long hair, because it makes unnecessary extra work. This is true, long flowing hair is a lot of work to maintain, which is far from pragmatic, but does it matter? Yes, Swain is supposed to be a pragmatic and focused dictator, but nobody is 100% pragmatic. Everybody does things that are unnecessary for the sake of aesthetics or personal enjoyment, or even for tradition or cultural reasons.

And Swain visibly does a few things that aren't pragmatic in his outfit alone. He wears a coat for seemingly no reason, he wears his hair long, he even put those metal feathers and the raven emblem on his back. All of those are probably just Noxian traditions he is adhering to. What use does a powerful warlock have for armor, yet he wears it because he is a Noxian military official. His coat is pointless from a pragmatic standpoint, if he wore it properly, it would be ripped to shreds when his wings came out, and even draping it over his shoulders is probably annoying and cumbersome. He could cut his hair short, it would certainly be easier to manage, but he's a powerful figure in Noxus, he can't be seen with a common soldier's haircut.

Keep in mind I'm not saying Swain should have long hair, I was a bit bummed when I first saw it too, I'm just saying it does make sense from a character and lore standpoint. Sadly, he probably can't have a beard either for the same reasons.

Also, fun drinking game: take a shot every time the word "pragmatic" comes up

Agreed!

Although i still dont think i can agree with how his face turned out. it was as if extra effort was put into it to show he is a dictator or some sort of bad guy. like face of a person can show what kind of people they are? i could be wrong though. maybe its just the Angle and the light of the main splash.

People complain over the dumbest things. I remember when they complained over Eve's eyes because it looked different than teaser. Like is swains hair really just irking peoples nerves? God...

Maybe he is so apathetic to his appearance that he throws on the first thing in his closet when he wakes up and just doesn't care about his hair. I'm not really sure someone of swains stature would be caring about what other people think about his appearance. But that is just my opinion. Idk he looks amazing and I cant wait to play him regardless.

IMO, the biggest deception is in how they hide how the current hairstyle is impractical in battle, especially with how Swain moves around.

His hair has no realistic animation (compared to say his jacket-cape), and doesn't even move when he jumps.

Because surprise, it will get in the way if he moves around like he does in-game.

In fact, this proves 2 things:

  1. Riot didn't animate the hair moving even the least bit realistically because it would prove that long hair really is more troublesome on the battlefield, especially for how Swain moves.

  2. OR that Swain uses copious amounts of the medieval equivalent of hairspray to lock his hair down in one solid block that never moves. Which means he does it every day before battles. Which means the hairstyle is not practical, is distracting, and that he is vain to keep his hair like this.

They didn't even OWN the long hair, make it swirl when he pirouettes or what's the point:

To be fair, no noble in history has had long hair

The coat actually denotes his status as a high-ranking officer (apparently), which is very important for a commander.

I dislike the hair because he looks like Lucius Malfoy now, not so much because of the hair itself.

Pragmatism vs Pride, really. And Swain seems like a guy who has more than a few ounces of pride himself.

###100% pragmatists wouldn't wear capes, either!

The fact that he wears his old captain's uniform DESPITE being a former outcast indicates the pride I was pointing out before, so... apply his pride to his theme as well.
