Jhin's Humanity

During the Q&A on Tuesday, WAAARGHbobo was answering a question explaining Illaoi's opinion of Jhin.

"She would not approve. For the same reasons she would be bothered by a compulsive gambler or alcoholic. He is doing the same thing over and over -- because he can't help himself. Hidden in Jhin's lines you can find the hints that he knows he's a monster and want's to stop...but can't."

This...is just awesome. My fear after seeing Jhin was that he would be a one-dimensional guy who just loves killing for the sake of some perverted passion, kind of like Shaco. But after paying due attention to his VO, I noticed a trend:

"I swear each performance is the last, but I lie every time." - he wants to stop, but he finds himself unable to break the cycle; he feels trapped "I am a slave to this passion." - captivity within killing; inability to escape "There is nothing for me but this." - futility in trying to do something else; again, captivity "My work asks questions, it never has answers." - futility in pursuing this passion; he will never get any answers by killing, and he knows this "I want to feel everything. The gun makes it so I do." - euphoria in killing; a desire to experience euphoria and happiness "It is only when the gun fires that I am alive." - euphoric emotions when killing; indicates this is the only place where he gets this "I envy silence... because I must be loud." - silence often means peace; Jhin can never have this because he feels forced to be loud, i.e. chaotic "Bliss comes only in the moment before I fire." - killing/his art is his only source of happiness "This... passion... compels me." - he feels forced to follow his passion; a lighter sense of enslavement

Jhin always seems to be trapped within his own passion for creating this art in killing. He's not in any way ignorant of it though, as WAAARGHbobo said. It's evident that Jhin feels alive (or enters a state akin to some type of extreme euphoria) when he is killing and equates it to artwork. Jhin finds his identity in this and thus feels trapped within it, compulsively following this passion because it's the only thing that gives him any sense of being alive. Jhin finds himself enslaved by his art and has been doing it for so long, he knows of no way to free himself from it; it's all he's known for so long. When someone lives in a cage for a long enough time, they can't leave even if they want to. This is Jhin's mentality. He know's what he does is wrong, that he should stop, and that he wants to stop, but he can't.

In this, we have a dynamic character who feels a sense of depression in that he can't escape his art, but at the same time it gives him enough satisfaction that he is able to lose touch with reality during his artwork. In the same manner as a drunkard who escapes the pains of his life through inebriation, Jhin escapes his feeling of captivity and the futility of his passion in the euphoria he gets from killing. This aspect of his character is so amazing and dynamic that it creates a fully rounded character that has multiple facets of personality, which is way cool for me. I personally love these types of characters who have a crazy side but still try to cling to humanity as much as possible.

Everyone has hardships in life, and everyone tries to escape them through something. Some have religion, some have alcohol, some have art, and some have murder.

And others have video games.

ThanX!. And you're spot on. Champ team has been actively trying to make our characters have more depth. Still stylized and exaggerated enough to fit in our game... but with more layers to uncover as you play them or play against them. As guy who had struggled with the transition from TV, ( i.e. "How the F do I write characters for a moba?!!") this warms my heart. Your observation and appreciation of Jhin really made my day. Thanx!item 3070 item 3070

I feel it is important to note Jhin does not want to stop out of any moral objections, he very much believes there is nothing wrong with his work. Maybe he is interested in pursuing a less volatile form of art, or simply tired of doing the same thing over and over, but I sincerely doubt he wishes to stop because killing is socially unacceptable.

Jhin is insane, at least from the perspective of the general population, and it manifests most clearly in his lack of empathy. He feels nothing for others outside of how he can use them to create art. WAAARGHbobo noted that Jhin is "kill-sexual" or "gun-sexual" implying his only interest rests with his work, which in turn provides evidence of an asocial or anti-social attitude.

He may be human, but any humanity Jhin might retain is nearly incompatible with our own conception of the concept; less than a man, more than a monster.

What you did there; I see it.

Jhin has no humanity, I see him in ranked, watch him get destroyed, he never apologizes for being unprepared.

Whenever I play Urgot I feel the same way but in the sense that Urgot just wants to die. "Eternal Life...Eternal Torture." "Death Is The Only Escape." "Endless Misery." "Existence is Torment." "Cannot...Rest..." Yet he hides this Under The Flabs Of Meat He Gets After Skinning The Corpses Of The Champions He Kills under his jerky "Revenge" attitude. "I detect the prescence of scum." I guess there's a reason why Urgot builds Tear first. Urgot item 3070

One of my favorite little aspects about Jhin is that I noticed that at the start of a match, like when in fountain or on the way to lane he can at times be heard breathing quite heavily. I was not sure why, until he references that fact that he has stage fright. He is trying to deal with his nerves at the start of each match :)

Now that I think about it ... when you kill Jihn, he'll hold his face while laughing hysterically.

I used to think that was just him being psychotic because he's a serial killer so it made sense, but now it makes me think he's losing it with depression finally flourishing, that he died as a broken man and couldn't escape his fate, so he's laughing it off while his life slips away. Makes his death all the more dramatic now ... :(

Riot is really putting work into their characters. Kindred, Jhin, Illaoi, Kench, reoworked Poppy, all of them were very well designed (thematically) and all of them have distinct personalities that really set them apart.

Also idk who guys got to do Jhin's voice, but spot on. His voice is amazing.

Also kudos to you Riot <3

Very well put. Perhaps so, his mask may be a symbol of his personality being consumed by the art of killing, making the man he once was completely covered by his volatile passion.

I would put his lore as my second favorite after Lux.

I was thinking of this while I was playing Jhin and caught him saying

"I swear each performance is the last, but I lie every time."

"I am a slave to this passion."

and

"My work asks questions, it never has answers." (Which I feel is one of the best lines in his VO in terms of introspective ideas. What he does, makes him questions why he does it, but he can never find a reason, he just does it).

This champion is beautiful

I wonder if the VU team will incorporate a similar concept in Vladimirs rework and/or VU (I think his kit does not need to change much, similar to my opinions of Galio, but whatever happens, happens) as Vladimir did not wish to kill innocent people as a young man and was no doubt selective about who he practiced blood magic on, but also has a compulsion to kill.

KING OF MASKS2/5/2016, 9:00:57 AM1 votes

Maybe it's just me, but Jhin kind of runs the risk of coming across as a relatively generic instance of the "I'm being controlled by my magically mystically malicious artifact" trope (in this case, the mask). Not that there's anything wrong with that, but combined with the equally tired "psycho artist" theme, I personally find him not particularly interesting.

But that's just, like, my opinion, man.

It's an interesting way to look at the character. He's apparently quite intelligent and polite even when he can't kill as we heard from his captors in Ionia. And yet he still doesn't feel complete unless he stages his horrible performances. This kind of disparity in character is something you often hear about people with unhealthy obsessions.

If he didn't kill people, he would be really likable.

Jhin's slight remorse is self-serving but at the same time. elects some sympathy, I do actually feel a little sorry for Jhin being so addicted to his passion. Hell it's to the point where Illaoi is like " whoa whoa chill out and use your passion for something better" that is saying something about Jhin.
