Varus's videos on Youtube, what happened?
I dont understand why can't we see these comments, only 6oo available. And I can't add more comment either, even I did, only me can see mines. I think it is over-reacted.[slayer-jinx-unamused]

Had a discussion with my friend earlier comparing the old lore to the new lore. He is one of those in favor of the old lore. When I asked him to imagine Kai being replaced by a female, and then asking him if he thinks the new lore is better he got quiet and conceded. People are so focused on the "2 gay dudes and a darkin" theme that they're missing the beauty of the story.
I actually think that would just make things worse. It's not about them being a couple, it's because Varus (or whoever freed the Darkin) didn't lose his family and chose then to have vengeance, they actually lost nothing.

Ouch. You didn't read everything did you? Valmar lost Kai, that is where his vengeance theme is coming from. Kai's body fused with Valmar's to form Varus host body, but Kai is very much dead. His soul is what is pleading with Valmar to keep himself, not to give in to hate. Varus is the one most in control, but his power seems to stem from Valmar's desire for vengeance. If Valmar does not give in to it, Varus appears to be unable to act whilst when he does give in, Varus kills everything. Just spend 20 minutes and read the comic fully.
Ouch. I freakin' did. Kai isn't lost, he's there in varus, alive, with Val. Ofc he was going to die if they didn't jump but they did, problem solved, there is no need to be vengeful because the only thing that Noxus stole from you is now part of you and you just lost your bodies so no fun under the sheets.
Varus isn't even killing Ionians, it's just Val and Kai being "holier than you" that makes them care so much of ppl they never have met or creatures their culture doesn't care much if not for specific cases. There is nothing so terrible about their condition if not that they are going to be slowly consumed by the Darkin (that if Riot doesn't come up with a way to have Val control Varus and lead him in a magical place where they can be revived).
But like you said, both of them are going to die eventually. So while Kai is still alive,he probably has only a few months, maybe a year left until he and Val are going to disappear.
Anyway I think K9s point was mostly that some people are so hung up about the "gay couple"-thing that they dislike the new lore just because of that.If you don't like the new story for other reasons, then that is fine.
That is still an assumption I make and can be thrown away from Riot anytime in the future.
What I don't condone about ppl defending this new lore is when they say things like: "but there is tragedy in this story". No, there isn't. Old Varus lost all that he cared for, forever and this was the reason that drove him to embrace the shadows of the Pit. This new lore is just an unfortunate event that led to the rebirth of a Darkin and the tragedy was just pumped in by a really well made music video that would have made an even better piece of art with the old lore.
I'd argue that there is tragedy in it,just not as much as the old lore.
Sure they might find a way to survive, but in the same way you could argue that it would have been possible in the old lore for Varus to find a way to revive his family.
Its like in the old lore, the family of Varus died, wheras in the new lore,Val and Kai got cancer that is considered to be incurable
I mean don't get me wrong,I don't think that the new lore is better than the old on,but saying that there is no tragedy involved in it at all,is just false, the tragedy just happened on a smaller scale with a bigger hopespot.
You didn't even pay attention to the new lore...

Do I need to screencap every part of the comic to make my point or can you just go read it without skimming through the artwork?

Reminder that in the old Lore Varus chose DUTY over the safety of his family. He was hardly sympathetic in losing his family when he chose that path. Had he attempted to save them I'd be inclined to favor the old lore like you two do but the fact stands he made his bed. At least in the new lore you can pity all three of them.

So you acknowledge that the new lore is nothing at all like the old lore meaning Riot's lore team has failed on a massive scale?

If the old lore was good, there would have been no reason to change it. As it stands, even the gay ghost buster triangle is better than the dude who is upset that HE let his family die. I've yet to see a retcon that I think isn't superior to the old lore in fact.

If the old lore was good
The Rioters who worked on the lore admitted the old one was good in interviews. You have no idea what you're talking about.
The issue is that the poowers of the pit left running free or in the hand of Noxus would be the demise of everything, his family too. He hopes for the villagers toe scape or whatever he can while he fulfills his duty like a real guardian would do (not like Val) and after losing all he decides to fall.
The fact that he had a strict sense of duty is a major part of his personality, the emotions > duty that teenagers like so much from the time of Twilight books is incredibly bad.
Why would waste this tragedy and potential instantly and not use it in future arcs?
Kal losing Val or vise versa or both dying in detail would be far more emotional than unknown characters dying in a single sentence.
I think at least one of them should die, so we can feel the real tragedy.
Varus as a whole used to be a tragic character by its origin, new Varus lost that (even if we don't know about the Darkins' story). Riot even showed that Val cna fully control Varus and that there might be hope for them, if this turns out to be just a dream and we witness the constant demise of the 2 trapped souls then it's going to have some tragedy.
But was there a reason (except personal preferences) to erase the old Varus tragedy which was hopeless and would give the Darkin host a lot of fuel and maybe see a slow merge of dientities instead of having 2 characters that offer nothing outside one being the lover of the other?
They did lose their families though. They can't interact with their families anymore due to fear that the Darkin will kill them. Imagine the feeling of isolation that comes from that. The sad thing is the Darkin might actually relate with this feeling of isolation since he is one of the remaining survivors of his people.
But they are alive and fine. And there is no sign of Varus wanting to kill them or he would have done it in the comic.
Also they are not traveling because they can’t come home, they are trying to see if there is a place where Varus can be sealed again and them getting back their bodies (even if most of the time it’s Varus controlling the body and thus they are actually going after other Darkins).
That's because Valmar and Kai had control in that moment, but we both know that who's in control switches between the humans and Varus. Yes they are trying to seal away the Darkin, but they still have to compete with the Darkin for control which is why Varus himself is searching for his sister in Shurima despite Valmar and Kai wanting to seal him away. If the Darkin can take control then why would they want to stay close to their families and make it easier for the Darkin to kill them? The reason Valmar and Kai want to seal him away is because he wants reunite with his remaining Darkin kin to terrorize humanity including but not limited to their families.
Unless Val and Kai are forever gone, Varus won't harm Val family for the simple reason that he is intelligent enough not to give their souls the strenght to suppress his will again.
As I said, there is space for a tragic ending and I really wish for it because the real character here is Varus, not the 2 Ionians. I just hope Riot doesn't throw a curve ball and tries to make them survive the longest possible because "if we kill the gay couple we'll be attacked by the fans and the media".
theres nothing to be confused about
Probably because of all the backlash the new Varus lore received they decided to limit the comments to the few most voted ones, leaving both sides of the argument but "hiding" the massive flame storm that the change caused.
His (their?) update is controversial, and YouTube is known for being.....YouTube.
It's funny because Riot referenced the lack of negative feedback on sites like Youtube as a reason that the Varus rewrite went well, when places like Youtube make it virtually impossible for dissenting opinions to exist.
