Riot has personally said they approve and love Factions.
And then they went and pissed off CupcakeTrap.
They pissed him off. It was a horrifying sight.
Why they didn't beg for mercy I do not know. By the Mothership I fear seeing the Cupcake's jimmies rustled again.
Wow. That's quite a compliment. Thank you. Realistically, there's no way that a handful of people chipping in scraps of free time can produce anything as polished and refined as what Riot's team of 30+ professional authors with a multimedia army at their beck and call can put together, but we try to make something the rest of the community can enjoy. Sometimes we feel kind of stupid, knowing that we can't possibly measure up, and your encouragement helps us hold our heads up high and keep trying.
So it's a very generous compliment, and it's a somewhat ironic compliment, too, because Factions was inspired by Riot—or rather, early Riot. The Riot that said, hmm, let's have a war between Noxus and Ionia, and who should win? Hey, let's have a big match over it, just like they're doing in-universe, and decide that way. New Riot is the polar opposite: they seem almost obsessive about controlling the story, controlling the setting, and pushing the community further and further away. Old Riot said, okay, we've got this zany MOBA, let's see if we can make a story about it. And they did! And it was zany, and a little eye-rolly at times, but it was fresh, interesting, and fun. And it welcomed the players in, and gave them a seat beside the fire to join in the storytelling. New Riot has locked us out in the cold. It's a little sad that, in this new reality, Factions is an example of community members building our own bonfire to warm ourselves, as we begin to make a new home, while Riot glares at us through their windows, scorning us as unwanted vagrants, embarrassing remnants of their garage-dev past, potential threats to their glittering new empire. As this sad chapter of League's history plays out, their glares bother me less and less, and their house seems less and less enticing. I'd rather be out here with the rest of the lore community, laughing it up and patching together our own fanon from what they discard as trash: rough around the edges, and dog-eared with love.
There's little that they could learn from us that would be compatible with their new mantra of control, standardization, and polish. Myself, I think League's lore thrives on chaos and adaptation. Factions embraces that. Not just the overall resolutions of each arc, but many of the twists and turns along the way, are the direct results of match outcomes and interactive lore events. We recognize that we're making a story based around a somewhat derpy computer game, and we delight in the opportunities that provides to get creative and, at times, a bit wacky. (Like making up stories about chronodistortion fields interrupting matches, and Demacian clerics invoking the healing ritual of controlare alteria deletus to revive catatonic Summoners.) We don't see ourselves as writing some big novel series with the game as a nuisance tagalong: the game is at the heart of Factions, as is its community.
It's kind of striking just how far Riot has diverged from this path.

Also even LolWiki is doing a more comprehensive job of keeping the lore organized.
CupcakeTrap is a cool dude. I used to enjoy playing factions a lot. I haven't played in a longass time though, last time I tried to get back into it there was literally no games for any factions let alone the one I wanted to play.
