My Problem WIth RetconTerra Is That It Creates Stagnant Champions That Don't Develop!

To be honest, the retcon decision still does not sit right with me, so I feel the need to post about its downfalls.

I'll agree that I might do it a bit too often, but please try to understand that I'm one of the players that got really invested in the old Runeterra, and that I have issues with it being retconned out of existence.

The new lore format doesn't seem to allow for much character devolopment/flavour in champions. We don't hear about their day to day shenanigans in the new lore, it's just summarized concepts.

Champions don't have any way to develop anymore! They are becoming stagnant!

It feels like Riot want to set each champion up with a cool theme, and then leave them stagnant in a never changing position. (lore-wise)

There is no Journal of Justice to tell us about how champions are interacting with one another, or Runeterra, and their effects on that world.

Riot's new lore direction doesn't seem to have any outlet for change in Runeterra outside of Retcons.

To me at least, the new lore removes the personality that champions had built in the old lore, through removing the events that no longer happened in cannon.

Based on the new lore release format, nothing ever happens in Runeterra....just stuff that used to be there that you didn't know about is there now. It's kinda lame.

Also, I think we can all agree, the revised lore backstories kinda suck.

Now all we actually know about most champions are a few sentences.

What you are complaining about however hasn't really anything to do with the retcon itself. Even if they didn't do the retcon,the lore would be still stangant,they wouldn't be able to suddenly push out tons of lore just because of a different lore direction.

If they wanted to they could do something like the JoJ again,but the thing is that they simply don't want to do that and instead choose different types of lore tellings.

I disagree.

Pre-retcon Riot had a system in place to develop Runeterra's lore, keeping it from becoming stagnant. Things would actually happen in Runeterra, and things would actually change.

It was called The Journal of Justice!

Through it, champions could actually have development outside of their origin story.

It was the means Riot used to develop preexisting champions.

Is it a suprise that champion lore is no longer developed past the origin story state now that Riot gave up on the JoJ? I don't think so.

If I have to the anti-Riot downvoted guy in order to help Riot fix the glaring problems with their new lore direction, I don't care.

Although I will admit it is an abstract concept (as often happens in art) the old lore of Runeterra seemed to have much more heart, while the new lore seems devoid of soul, to me at least.

And that is exactly the point. The JoJ was over even before the ret-con. The story was frozen anyway.

You make it sound like the JoJ advanced everyone. In fact, very few champions got any relevant expanded lore. Oh sure, we learned some fun tidbits like TF x Eve, Morg's innate desire to bake, and the Battle of Kathmandu. But it also left out even more champions BECAUSE they just couldn't be placed in. Morde, Cho, Hec, Brand, Anivia, etc.

Some champions never developed even with the JoJ though. Amumu got one portion of development that barely mentioned him and was about two paragraphs long. The JoJ was inherently flawed because it literally couldn't develop everyone in a meaningful way. I mean think about it, how are the struggles of Yasuo and Riven dealt with in a newspaper when a global crisis is going on between nations? They're sidelined to being small articles that barely deliver.

I'd go as far to say that the JoJ was bad at developing anything anyway because it was both a retelling and extremely broad. We didn't see how champions were dealing with stuff, we were told they did X and said Y. Nothing happened through the JoJ, stuff happened and we were told after the fact that it happened.

Please read what I write before posting again.

Yes the JoJ was a way to develop some champions outside of their origin story(if it was good or not is another question),but how does that have to do with the retcon?

It is utterly illogical to see a connection here because there is nothing about the retcon that would prevent them from doing something like the JoJ again(maybe they had to rename it though).

I mean what would prevent them from doing something like the JoJ again now that the league is gone?

Not to mention that the JoJ stopped a long time before they actually announced the retcon.

The decisions to stop with the JoJ and to retcon the league were completely sepearte.

It first real problem of the retcon is the complete silence from the devs. When they should be the most active answering any questions about the retcon, they are mute to the lore fans. This only makes it even worse for people to understand their decision, like yourself.
