Any thoughts or theories on the rocks?

If there was lore around it, they might say that Ionia is overflowing with magic so sometimes it can be concentrated affecting the landscape is on ways.
But the 'star gate' idea you mention is a nice one also, a gateway to another world long since closed but the magical after effects still remain as the portal warped reality around it.
