League Judgments Should Come Back In Some Way, They Told Us So Much About Champions.

A few minutes ago, on a whim, I decided to check out some of the old League of Legends Judgments.

They are so freaking awesomely written, and I think Riot should consider finding a way to bring them back. Here's one that told me way more about a champion than any random event. Please,** actually read** it before commenting on it. It's pretty engaging.

"Candidate: Lux Date: October 17, 20 CLE

OBSERVATION Lux runs briskly into the hallway, almost bursting with excitement. The light plays off the young girl’s golden hair, emitting a brightness that almost gives her an ethereal air. Her colorful attire and disarming smile would fool any ignorant passerby, but the ease with which she wears her battle armor would give any seasoned warrior pause.

She pauses for a moment to take in the scenery, her intelligent eyes darting around. An intricate baton darts rapidly between her fingers, conveying her impatience.

The truest opponent lies within.

An unimpressed “hmph” spills out of her lips. Striding forward, she pushes firmly with a gloved hand to open the marble doors before her. With an effortless spin of her baton, her body is enveloped in a bright aura. She runs inside, undaunted by the complete darkness that swallows her up.

REFLECTION Garen, the Might of Demacia, her long-lost brother, stood before her. His face was stern, yet kind, and exactly how she had imagined he would look in real life, having only seen him in the League match broadcasts since he had been taken away. “Why do you want to join the League?”

Lux allowed herself a smile, trying to not seem smug. While anyone who had been subject to a League judgment was forbidden to discuss the trial, Lux had done her research, and she knew that they summoned illusions to extract their answers. It was mere child’s play for her; she could see right through it, and she knew what they wanted to hear.

She straightened and looked the illusion of her brother straight in the eye. “To fight for justice in the name of Demacia.”

“What is the real reason, Luxanna?”

“Victory for our allies, defeat for our enemies, and justice for all.” They were both quotes from The Measured Tread, the handbook that any self-respecting Demacian could recite on command, but they did not make them any less true for her own purposes.

Her brother frowned, and that was the last thing Lux saw before an explosion of light consumed them.

It was happening again. Sometimes, the light would bounce off the glass hall of the Demacian Royal Academy, casting a bewitching display of prisms in every direction. Lux’s skin would shimmer, as if composed from the dust of crystals. Her mood lifted and she let the light envelop her, rendering her invisible in plain sight.

She hadn’t yet gained control over the odd occurrence, which was unfortunate as it would happen at random intervals during the most inopportune of moments. Lux ran off in the direction of her home, heart racing in the hopes that the illusion would stick around long enough for her to show her parents. There was only a fleeting twinge of guilt that struck her for leaving school, but her teacher would count her as absent anyway.

Lux burst into the Crownguard residence. To her delight, she heard familiar voices speaking quietly in the kitchen. She found three military officials standing at attention, speaking to her parents. Her heart skipped a beat as she started to retreat back into the living room; they were discussing important business, and she had been taught better than to interrupt. She would have left the house entirely, except at that one dreadful moment, she heard her name.

She froze.

“It is the greatest honor you could bestow upon our household to take Luxanna. She will serve you well, just as Garen has before her.” A chair scraped along the floor as her mother stood.

“You are sure, Lilia? Your daughter is at the age where she needs her parents the most, especially after taking her older brother away.”

“It is all in the King’s name. You will provide all the parenting that she will need.” Her father’s tone was dismissive.

“Very well. It is done.”

Lux fell to the ground, the repressed memories unforgivingly rushing back into her mind. Her parents delivering the news. Lux barricading herself in her room. The pain in her arms as they forcibly dragged her away from her home. Her hair draped across her face as she refused to look at her parents. The burn of her tears as she cried herself to sleep every night. The booming voices yelling at her to focus. Her screams as she cursed her family for doing this to her.

Then, her own voice echoing back at her, reciting the Justice Pledge alongside her fellow recruits. The comfort of re-reading The Measured Tread cover to cover countless times. The indoctrination of the new incoming class, led by Lux herself. The pride swelling in her heart as she marched forth under Demacia’s shining banner. The accolades in praise of her exemplary work. The absolute love for her country. The emptiness of realization of what she had willingly grown to love.

The assault of memories subsided, and she was left slumped in the darkness. She knew the League had retreated from her mind, but the test wasn’t over yet. Someone was standing before her, and she didn’t even have to look up to know who it was.

“Will you admit the real reason why you want to join the League now?”

Her labored breaths caught in her throat just long enough for her to whisper, “Because I have nothing else…”

The darkness shattered around her, falling to the ground in shards. She crumpled to the ground, heaving sobs racking her body.

Garen remained standing, his normally kind face gruff and unreadable as the illusion dissolved around them. “You have just shared your mind with me. To become a champion of the League, you must allow others into your mind, and they will know your true conviction and purpose better than you yourself. If you are prepared, you know what you must do.”

Her brother turned and strode through the hallway that stretched before them to another set of double doors. He did not stop to lend her a hand, nor did he glance backwards to see if she would follow.

He didn’t need to. Lux remained on the floor, composing herself. For a moment, she considered calling out to her brother or running back into the Great Hallway, out of the League’s penetrative gaze. This was the first challenge that ever daunted her, even moreso than when she was being tested by Demacia’s top magicians or sneaking through Noxus’s innermost tunnels. But she was a Crownguard, and she knew that she would overcome this challenge, just as she had overcome all other challenges in her life.

She stood, clutching the baton deftly in her hand. She would prove that her dedication to her city-state was true, and that she had not been lying when she first answered their question."

This judgment not only tells us a lot about Lux's character, but also gives us a brief view of Demacian society.

I hope we see more lore of this quality from RIot in the future.

In a way, the League Judgments were spiritually succeeded by the newer parts of lore which detailed story situations they were in, such as Pantheon engaging in against the band of mercenaries.

To be honest, we kind of get an incite on how champions think purely with the flavor text they receive such as the stories of them in action like in the League Judgements.

It's not that LJs provided more or had a better story process. It's the concept of how it was happening (this isn't real but a mind trick to reveal your hidden feelings and thoughts). It's nice, but then that means adding either an extra story part purely for a Judgement or pretty much stealing them from the universe to do a non-canon (but with plenty of canon information) pull into a pocket dimension to have it happen.

Sorry to be a stickler, but the word you're trying to spell is "insight" and not "incite"...they may sound similar, but they mean very different things.

That being said, I disagree with the notion that Riot can produce the lore at the same kind of quality "purely with flavor text", as you seem to imply. If I'm misinterpreting your post, please set me straight.

Although I must disagree with you when you say "It's not that LJs (League Judgements) provided more or had a better story process. It's the concept of how it was happening" I feel that the League Judgments provided much more insight into each champion's character than anything we're getting now.

I used to feel that Riot really cared about producing quality lore content on a frequent basis (Bi-weekly). It was clear that Riot wanted to advance Runeterra's narrative on a consistent and frequent basis. They achieved that during Season 2. Since then, they've slowly downgraded their lore production process to the point where they only release a couple lore events, and a couple champions, per year...which is far less then it used to be...which wouldn't be a problem if there was enough lore releases to support their retcon decision...which there isn't. Half the game's lore still doesn't make sense with itself, and Riot doesn't seem like it's in a hurry to fix that.

I'll be the first to admit that the gameplay of League of Legends is topnotch, but Riot's got some major work to do when it comes to it's lore...assuming that Riot still cares about enough to give produce more content for it than the 3-5 token events, and the 3-5 champions, per year.

1.) Thanks for the spellcheck (no sarcasm). XD I don't use the word often, so I guess I just overlooked that.

2.) By what Rito says (you may take this with a grain of salt. People seem to not trust Rito, even when they do finally bring forth what they say they would), they are actually trying to produce more. Their problem is they don't want to go "quantity over quality." As in, they do may just have the capacity to go bi-weekly with the lore; however, doing so may mean that what they write are more likely to have plotholes and lesser quality writing. On top of that, they also want to make sure that each story has the potential to lead into another and be conjoined with other storylines.

Jaredan said they're trying to increase their "bandwidth", so going bi-weekly would be an easier thing to do. The more skilled writers they have, the more things they can produce.

Bi-weekly means they won't have as much time for planning the future lore with what they have now, so if they mess up on one piece, they're stuck with it. I mean, they could retcon their little story they posted 2 weeks ago, but uh...we saw how lore fans get over retcons.

Even if you don't necessarily agree with whether or not Riot cares or that Riot is just making an excuse to produce lore at their own pace, I rather know that when I get a new piece of lore, they took their time and actually dug into it as opposed to "We gotta meet this deadline! Go! Go! Go!"

3.) No, flavor text alone can't build a story. The Flavor text is an excerpt of a moment in their lives or what they can randomly do or interact with things. Kindred's flavor text shows them out reaping the souls on a battlefield. Diana's FT shows her fighting Void creatures (again) on a nightly basis. Leona's showcases her thought process on how to deal with raiders. (apparently, she puts thought into whether or not she should kill someone. Most of the Rakkor would just kill them all right then and there and be done with it.)

The LJs go into the minds of the characters and (at times more often than not) yank out their most heart-wrenching moment. Now, I read Lux's judgement. Went over it twice. It looks like the information we got would naturally appear in her full background when League ever reaches it. Yes, we know about a bit of Demacian society due to her LJ as well as a bit of her personality. Same thing with Fiora's background. Tells us what happened to her as well as showcase the environment she's in. an LJ would take her background, trim off a bit of the edges, make sure she's walking through the corridors, and mind fuck her with memories of the event in the background.

We know Fiora trained under her brother to learn Fencing. We know Fiora had to kill her father to restore honor. And we know that Fiora is now head of the household.

What the LJ would provide, for the most part, is her feelings and thoughts of what occurred. That's it (with the added bonus of her admittance into the League of Legends!)

4.) Also, this isn't for the sake of argument or prove my point. This is just a personal opinion that may just be me in my mind. By what I read and just the structure, it almost feel as though Lux's judgement was somewhat lesser quality than what I've been reading of the FT and Backgrounds. This isn't to say it's horrible or that it wasn't good, but it didn't feel like it was put through that high of a quality check. It may just be the stylistic difference I'm looking at? Also, to give you a better understanding of how i feel, it seems like it's about the same quality tier as Jhin's background.

Um... I'm not to sure how to respond to you. Everything you say just comes across as incoherent nonsense. Could you explain your point in a simpler way?

Just ignore me. I'm a person who tends to ramble. Even if what I'm saying or is logical, I lack the ability to properly put it into a coherent order for the consumption of other people.

What I'm saying is, I...don't know how. XD Sorry. Just go ahead and ignore me. I'm not the best at extended discussions.

ummm.......k?

At the very least, I respect your passion. You were at least motivated enough to make a post voicing your opinion, and that isn't nothing. Thanks for posting in my thread.

edit: Btw, I think I kinda like your spirit Valaran Nara. If I might ask, how did you come up with your name? It's pretty awesome and sounds like it is rooted in some kind of fictional lore, like mine is.

I use to write a lot in my free time and do RPs when I was still in high school. I noticed a lot of my character names started with the letter N (Naomi, Neolin, Null Void, Nathaniel). Proper naming when doing stories and whatnot can't allow for too many names with the same starting letter. Doing so can get confusing for the reader at times. So, I randomly went through the alphabet and chose V.

The character's original name is Valaran Naralav (same name forward and backwards), but whenever I said his name, my friends thought I said "Never laugh" and kept making jokes about how he never laughed until they saw me right it down. Got sick of the nonsensical joke, so I just shortened it to Nara. I've since trashed the character (a not-so bright, forest dwelling humanoid with horns, armor, and a mouth guard.) Oh, before I forget, I also had it to where he was super big and imposing til he took off the mouth piece. Then he suddenly looked femboy with lady fingers if he took off the gauntlets.

LoL, that's actually a decent story for your name. I think it's kinda cool to hear how usernames are made in online communities theses days. Thanks for sharing.
