When Riot said they were going to redo all the old splashes, this isn't what I thought they meant.

Just lazily taking the Chinese art that ALSO looks out-dated and doesn't match the current art style isn't what I call a solution.

EDIT: Apparently they are just place-holders. I was not aware of that. I suppose that's not so bad, as long as they deliver on what they said they would do. I'll still leave this thread like this though because I don't mean to give people the impression that I was whining for whining's sake: I just didn't understand what they were doing.

From http://www.surrenderat20.net/2016/03/325-pbe-update.html#more

[PBE] Global Splash Updates Over the next two patches (6.7 and 6.8), several older skin and champion splash arts are going to be receiving small tweaks or be replaced with versions of splash art from different regions in an effort to unify assets across all regions.

NOTE: Just to be clear, this is NOT the same as splash art updates for champion updates. Ququroon posted a reminder of that over on twitter with a handy image to explain the differences (and a teaser for Lil Slugger Trundle's updated splash art!!)

also

Here's Riot JXE with context on these changes: "Hey folks, As many of you (especially fans of the Chinese LoL scene) may know, some of our older skin and champion splash arts are different across the world. This is a big deal - splash art is one of most important tools we have for conveying a champion's fantasy and personality in League. We want players to have a global, unified experience - it's confusing when (ex.) Taric or Goth Annie have vastly divergent representations of their power and feel depending on which region you play League in. Splashes are used everywhere: from champ select to the loading screen, portrait icons, the store, and more recently Hextech Crafting. With that in mind, we'll be updating a large number of our older splash arts to unify them across all regions. You should be seeing the first batch in today's PBE (and onward throughout the patch 6.7 PBE cycle), with another batch coming later in patch 6.8!" Edit: Thanks for the feedback everyone. We won't be making any reverts or changes during this round, but this feedback will help our splash artists prioritize what to upgrade when they get the chance. I mentioned this in a comment, the benefit of making these changes is to eliminate a pipeline that has been causing us internal pain. We know some of these aren't as nice and the art style is off, but choosing one splash or the other was the fastest way to kill this pipeline. We want to focus on new content and features, not firefighting and changes like this help us do that.

I am a bit disappointed as well, especially with some of the choices they picked to over each other, like the Ammumu classic skin. I hope they don't use the Taric Chinese splash arts. Those are just blatant lies and don't do him justice.

This is just a temporary fix for now Like Duct Tape to fix a hole in the boat

I am not going to be able to find the source, but about a year ago, Riot said they were going to redo all the old splashes eventually, but in the meantime, they were going to use the Chinese splashes as placeholders.

Good thing that this really isn't what they meant.

They are going to update the old skin splashes with real updates. The chinese ones are more like a short time solution for now, simply because it takes a lot of time to update so many splash arts.

Its just like the texture rebalances which weren't considered real VUs.

The new splash is mostly awful. Some of it's okay (like the Akali stuff or Ahri's face being updated) but then some of it's just brutal. Fallen Morgana or Nightraven Fiora, for example, are pitifully ugly. As a Morgana main who mostly plays with the Fallen Morgana skin, I'm not pleased at all. I'll play with the silly Victorious one instead so I don't have to look at that brutal splash when I play.

Those Morgana ones are fucking tragic lmao

Fiora's Nightraven splash makes me cry...
