Dark Cosmic Jhin Final Verdict

This will be a long post, as I'm giving freedback on everything besides the lore, which I don't believe is out yet. Now then, let us begin.

The Splashart

https://i.imgur.com/u1TnNMU.jpg[] It shows the skin in all its glory, as it should. Jhin wading through a pool of universal energy, admiring the annihilation of a world in the palm of his hand. He calls himself a god, and in this splash, he certainly comes off as one. And, on top of it all, its beautiful. What more can I really say?

The Skin

  • Color wise, I feel that it is very similar to Blood Moon.

  • The effects are very nice. The galaxy on the inside of his cloak, the stars on his skin. Its very pleasing to look at. Very... Soothing. I also love the distortion around his right shoulder due to the black hole. Very nice.

  • It looks smooth. To me, at least. The cloak flows, his motions are fluid. Nothing appears to be stiff.

  • The abilities are nice. I love the constellations and the crystal flowers. More than anything, though, I love his ultimate. A mix of an aurora, a black hole, and constellations. Truly breathtaking. Its a shame only I can see it, really.

  • The abilities look nice, as does Whisper.

  • No face reveal!

The Animations

  • The Joke: Could use a few more lines, honestly. I love the ones that are here, though. Very amusing.

  • The Taunt: Again, needs more lines. Very nice, though.

  • The Dance: Wasn't a fan at first, honestly, but it grew on me.

  • The Laugh: Not as sinister as I would have liked, but still nice. I do like his clapping as well.

  • The Crits: Okay so, guys, I noticed something. When Jhin crits, the barrel(aka his cane) is attached to Whisper. I love this little detail. I also love his twirl, and I will definitely run multi-IE with this skin because of that.

  • The Q: What can I say? He throws it. It was brought to my attention that he launches his Q from the black hole on his shoulder, and that he doesn't throw it. That's a nice detail.

  • The W: The cane just appearing out of nowhere and then disappearing is a bit odd, but I'm glad its there.

  • The E: The throw is a bit odd, honestly. He went from looking like he was blowing us a kiss to just tossing the thing on the ground.

  • The R: Whisper is not fully assembled for this skin. Instead, Jhin unleashed his true form and fires the shots from his hand instead. Its an odd choice, honestly, but it looks amazing.

  • The Recall: Like I said, its dramatic. I'd expect nothing less.

  • The Death: Oh... Oh no... Its so pretty. I'm not supposed to want him to die, Riot. What the fuck. That bow, though, and him becoming a constellation? Amazing.

  • The Respawn: Damn, that's cool as fuck.

  • The Idle: There are a few idle animations. In one, Jhin conjures up a star, looks at it, then flicks it away. In another, he looks around, tilting his head, as if he's curious or observing something. In another, he sits down, again tilting his head seemingly in curiosity before standing back up with a twirl. Very nice.

  • The Walks: Homeguard looks nice, very powerful looking. His fast walk and normal walk are both nice.

Didn't think Jhin could be anymore of an asshole, but damn. "Cosmic garbage" is my new favorite insult.

The VO

  • Quinton Flynn returns! Yes!

  • Gives some incite into the lore of the Cosmic universe, as well as for Dark Cosmic Jhin.

  • Like I said, his joke and taunt could use more lines.

  • The effects on his voice are nice. I especially love the haunting chorus for this skin in particular.

  • The song that sometimes plays on his first move is very nice as well.

  • His signature Haiku is present, "In darkness, I dream, of a cold and silent world".

  • "A single bullet... To shatter the mirror of my own godhood" is I believe a reference to his classic splash art.

  • Overall, very terrifying.

Other

  • The icon and boarder are both nice.

  • It feels great to play. To me, at least. Especially with the crit animations on every shot, just twirling around without a care in the world. It feels nice.

  • The sound affects are nice.

What Can Be Improved

  • Sometimes, in the idle animation with the star, the star doesn't appear, so he's just playing with/flicking away nothing.

  • His arm(s) clip through his cloak sometimes, mainly the left one(s).

The Final Verdict

I've waited a few months for this skin. You all knew how afraid I was. Would it have a face reveal? Would it be disappointing? There were so many concerns I had. Now that its here, I'm honestly relieved and overjoyed.

My initial reaction to the reveal was just "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA". I wanted to let out an excited scream, I really did, but my family was asleep, so all I could really do was that. I was overcome by emotion seeing that beautiful ultimate. Moved to tears, really.

I can say with every degree of honesty that this skin is beyond what I was expecting for him. The skins team really did a good job with this, and I can not thank them enough for it.

I started playing League 2 years ago. My first time playing Jhin was an experience, to say the very least. I got chills. To this day, I still do. But I've wanted to feel that feeling I got when I first heard his voice and first played him again. For 2 years I've been chasing that dragon, and I finally caught it. Dark Cosmic Jhin really reignited the passion I had for this character. I love it beyond words, and I don't think any of what I said here can really do how I feel justice.

I feel like I'm missing some things, though. If you noticed anything I didn't, feel free to point it out. Also, you can ask me questions if you need me to elaborate on any of the things I said, since I'll admit, I was a bit vague.

I love Jhin and I love the Dark Star skin line and I do not love this skin. I feel very different about it than you do it seems. There's a LOT wrong with it to me and I honestly feel like most of it should be scrapped (despite knowing full well there's absolutely no chance of that happening).

My biggest issue is the voice over. Jhin just isn't Jhin without certain subtle details in his voice that are very lacking with this skin. There's no hint of the beast lying in wait under a calm exterior. It's dull, drab, and disappointing. Some of it might be the acting but I think most of it is the processing and the writing. Too much turning the pitch up at the end of sentences that just takes all the weight out of so many lines. A lot of straight up poor writing (so many obtuse lines!). The echo in his voice is far too airy and light (just like Project). Some of the passionate lines are devoid of the breathy whisps and bestial snarls that clue you into the level of psychotic killer lurking within.

The jokes aren't funny. The lack of whimsy on the few occasions it should exist is painful. Some of his lines are straight up cringey. Most of the pretentious lines are completely devoid of subtly. So many lines are boring, egotistical, nonsense which feels so out of place for Jhin. And throughout his emphatic lines the emphasis or the line as a whole often doesn't match up with either the trigger or purpose of the line. For example, his pentakill line is great, except that it's far too tame for a pentakill. Jhin passionately revels in the heights of his artistry. That line would be much better used for a less dramatic moment.

In particular his most common lines when just moving around, killing minions, and casting his basic abilities are such a let down. They're dull at best. And as you said, there are too few common lines (his interactions with other skins seem to have eaten up a lot of his VO). Occasional whispers of madness and poetry are a hallmark of what makes Jhin aesthetically pleasing to play. But when a few lines are repeated so often and many of his better lines are an interaction with another skin that feeling is severely lacking. To be fair there are a few diamonds in the rough among his lines, but far too few.

The next biggest issue I have with the skin is the entire tone of the visuals, particularly the colors. It's too bright! This is supposed to be DARK Cosmic Jhin, not Pastel Purple Jhin. His outfit is a slew of different colors but they are nearly all brighter than even the splash art shows, which itself I feel is a little too bright. The lack of darkness both literal and metaphorical is an issue not only with the model but the effects as well. So many pretty sparkly stars... This is Dark Cosmic Jhin! This skin should be so edgy you can split hairs with it.

Also, why four arms? Is it really just because "4"? The other arms seem to serve no interesting purpose and they screw up his silhouette, making him look oddly bulky yet scrawny at the same time. It'd be better if he just had two but those two left visual trails sometimes that look like his current two extra ghostly arms.

The splash art barely even features destruction, something that should be a key theme for this skin, yet is nearly entirely absent. It should make you feel like Dark Star Thresh's splash art does at least. The 4 pointed star on his forehead should just be deleted along with his ghostly arms. The thing on his shoulder is a little too big. Why is he wading through a glowy oil spill and turning a lone grey lump of a planet into a ring instead bringing oblivion to stars and more?

As a whole the skin reminds me heavily of the Morgana visual update and I mean that in the most, "please throw it in the trash, light it on fire, and start over" way possible.

My only problem with the skin is in the mask spalsh art vs in game. In game you have it look like some sort of plague doctor mask, where in the splash art the bottom part of the mask is more wider (personally better looking).

Yo that splash got me both fearing and admiring Jhin. JUST AS IT SHOULD DO.

This skin reminds me of why I love Jhin as a character, even if I have a few gripes about his attacking.

The one thing that I think you forgot to mention as a whole is the music with this skin. Jhin has always been about the performance, and with all his skins comes an inclusion of music. What do you think about his first-move song? His ultimate song?

You might've mentioned it and I missed it lol

i want to see the morde rework and cosmic jhin to get one shot by karthus ult just to imitate the snap with their death animations. i guess brand could be in there too.

Not a Jhin player or fan but this skin really looks AMAZING! I like the creepy mask and the cloak alot and the effects are stunning. While I felt that some Dark Star skins were pretty much fillers (looking at you Jarvan), they really outdid themselves on this batch of skins. I would not habe thought that Dark Star Chromas would wirk, but all of Karmas variations look wonderful (especially the blue ones). GJ art team!

I enjoy this skin but the detachment when he fires is really keeping me away. I'd be basically not enjoying the champ until I get some crit. But effects, the voice over... Perfection as always Jhin.

Dunno about you all but I'm a little miffed that this Jhin skin got almost twice as much in special interactions than the Morde rework did, why riot? Are we not worth the effort

Well... How to start ? Hmm, my username ? Of course, no other skin than the Dark Cosmic Jhin could please more to a Parisian artist. Virtuosity combined with the "infinity" of the galaxy (just like the artistic inspiration) make nothing else but perfection. I wanna say that a looot of people from the community shared their ideas and some concept arts, such as Pulsefire Jhin, but Riot always surprises me when it’s release time ! I’ve been waiting for so long, and I’ve been so demanding... But this skin is just as good as I wished. Some of you may dislike some points, but to me, the Dark Cosmic skin is actually a meaningful choice according to the artistic domain.

the W needs to be fixed it appears out of nowhere and has a strange shape as his ult animation even though we dont see it when the zoomed in the showed that he only moved one hand and my opinion is if u gonna animate for one might as well do it for all of them since you are showing them in the game dont make it half assed for a legendary skin

Love the skin and LOVE the verdict hahaha. just thought i'd mention that in the login animation you can see all 4 bullets (as comets) flying around the black hole in whisper. Just thought that was an amazing tiny detail.

I love this skin so much. Although I wish his E was a universe in orbit and once it was stepped on, the universe spun faster and exploded into a black hole. Just a thought.
