@Riot, Your Lore Retcon Isn't Working...You Haven't Even Managed To Complete It Yet! Just Undo It!

Impetual··7 votes·784 views

After Many, Many Months... The lore retcon is still happening. Riot still hasn't gotten their ducks in a row and figured out how they want to proceed with things, and the lore is still a mess.

Runeterra is still in a state where it can't exist! Lore can't happen in Runeterra until this retcon is resolved, and despite starting the whole thing, Riot seems to lack the resolve and resources to make sense of the lore a timely manner....heck even if they fixed things now it would be pretty late.

Riot, this Retcon failed. Get out while you can. Undo the retcon and go back to focusing on creating good lore like you did before!

Agreed.

Please Riot, don't abandon innovation. Don't tear out the league.

Please let your game have lore, instead of a side-universe.

So far you've only claimed to be doing a retcon, you still haven't gone there.

Meaning...

It's not to late to abandon ship and swim back to the huge continent of stuff that we want to continue hearing more of. (mostly because that metaphorical ship is still in dry-dock).

Hey Impetual,

Many members of the community, like yourself, are upset about the retcon going on with lore. It was never Riot's intention to upset players, as storytellers, their goal is ultimately to be able to tell more stories, and create a universe that both makes sense, and is interesting. Riot has admitted that there have been some bumps in the road, parts of their plan ultimately fell out of place. But ultimately, I believe that when the smoke finally clears, the story of Runeterra will be one that everyone can enjoy, and be fascinated by. It's a bumpy road to get to the ideal point, but the best thing you can do is hold on tight, and wait for our arrival to The Promise Lore (TM).

((Disclaimer: I do not work at Riot, and The Promise Lore isn't actually trademarked. Yet.))

Can I join you on your train of optimism? There's so much pessimism on the boards (well deserved pessimism of course) that it's comments like this. :)

I recently bought MonteCristo's hype train, and gave it a new coat of paid, so feel free to hop aboard!

Mky feelings are that in order for Riot to be truly successful, it needs to hear the opinions of its fans. Blind optimism (upvotes) doesn't help them decide their direction, constructive criticism does!

I want Riot to be better! I think they Want to be better too! That means holding them to a higher standard in terms of games!

And you definitely have a great point here. If this was a county fair, it would win first prize. Riot has taken into consideration the opinions of it fans, but in certain cases with the types of champions/characters they want to make, and the stories they want to tell (the awesome ones), the old lore doesn't provide the sandbox needed to make this Shangri-La.

I'll give you a specific example. Rek'Sai is this huge, ultimate predator gal. Her lore is more or less made up of a series of journal entries from an inspiring entrepreneur-turned-philosopher (more or less) to a girl he fancies about how he plans to get rich quick in Shurima. He gets this funny idea from his uncle to try to catch a worthy Xer'Sai specimen for 300 big ones (some fancy Shurima currency), and thinks that Rek'Sai would be worth about 2000. However, he eventually finds one of her burrows, and realizes Rek'Sai is too powerful to be contained, too large and too monstrous to be messed with (this is where he gets smart and realizes Noxians are like children with their pride).

Now, this format of lore is very interesting, and engaging, I would think. However, something like Rek'Sai couldn't exist in the old lore. She's a beast (of sorts), so no political bop-shoo-op, and she's suppose to be unable to be caught, meaning the Institute of War wouldn't have her. But she's still a cool champion, right? Huge monster Void Queen is something we can get a little excited about, especially viewing it from a first-ish person perspective through the journal entries.

Riot ultimately wants to create awesome stories about awesome champions doing awesome things. But champions who have no reason for joining to IoW, and are too powerful to be caught, shouldn't not be champions for those reasons (apologies for the double negative). And making summoners into obscure magic/political puppet masters who dangle summoners on some string for the sake of the homeland isn't all that cool. It may seem cool for the players (because we're the summoners, and being op is great), but ultimately it makes champions feel a little expendable, in my opinion at least.

Impetual, you seem like a nice guy/gal/variation-there-upon (person would be the right word here), so I will offer you a 1st class ticket onto the Korean Lore Hype Train (recently bought from MonteCristo and re-purposed), because ultimately stories like Rek'Sai's are the kind that champions and legends deserve, and by extension, the kind that are engaging, and exciting. Feel free to jump aboard when you're ready! :D

idk why you even care so much... I didnt even see a post where they statet that the league was removed out of the lore all i saw was that skarner got rewritten into a douchbag monster that guards some chamber. The only time i cared about the judgement was on lee sin because he used to be a summoner thats all. And now that the judgement and the league seems just un attended i cant help but feel pity for guys that actually care about moba lore. Take dota 2 for example... No character there makes any sense... It never did because they where based on warcraft 3 models and skillsets. so i dont know maybe write lore of your own or move on.
