What draws you to a character?

Hotarµ·1/18/2020, 6:47:17 AM·18 votes·18,515 views

I was playing a Pantheon game earlier today and started thinking about some of his voice lines, more specifically these two:

  • "Brother to warriors resting beneath wheat. Son of battles a thousand times lost. I know who I am, and I will show the gods what I can become!"

  • "The best climbers know how to fall."

It got me thinking, what do you guys enjoy the most about your champion's character or quotes? What draws you to them? Do you feel empathy or sympathy for them? Is there a certain voice line or piece of lore that elevates them above the rest of the roster? Let me know because I'd love to hear what makes your champion stand out above the rest.

I myself love tragic, flawed, and mysterious characters. I'm really drawn to Pyke and Pantheon for those reasons. Pyke (naturally) has a lot of voice lines surrounding his descent into the mouth of the jaull-fish and his exposure to whatever was down there.

While those voice lines appear to be simple on the surface they paint a much more vivid and sympathetic image of his character. Lines like "Heard a lot of 'last words'... Forgot 'em all." portray the angry, vengeful revenant that terrorizes Bilgewater whereas lines like "Went too deep, part of me is still down there... swimming..." and "We're already drownin', all we gotta do is open our mouths and let the water in..." show us in stark contrast how he genuinely believes he's been inducted into something bigger, that what he's doing is justified and he's welcoming us to bask in that glory as well.

Maybe there's a part of him that wants to escape... but it's far more likely that he's so far gone, so irreversibly corrupted and his mind has been warped and distorted into a fragment of what it once was. He's just... _lost. _

Atreus (Pantheon) ascended Mount Targon and witnessed the death of someone he called his brother, Pylas, only to be cast aside and used as a mere vessel for the Aspect of War. Yet even after being impaled on a blade and left for dead beneath a murder of crows Atreus rose up, forsook his own name and became the new Pantheon to fight against those who would use their powers to destroy the world he nearly lost. The voice actor for Pantheon did a fantastic job, he's got so much character packed into every quote and the delivery is just spot on, I can't get enough of it.

skarner really gets me thinking when he says "skar-skar-skarner!" while sitting in a bush. really is deep and connects with me mentally and physically.

Jhin really appeals to me. Not only is the voice acting phenomenal, but the eloquent and articulate way he describes his macabre art really drives home the serial killer vibe. The contrast between soft whispers and victorious shouts, the music, the sounds of gunfire... It makes you feel like Jhin.

As a character, he's a clash of opposites. Passionate, yet restrained. Calculating, yet compelled by obsession. He does not what is best for him or for others, but for the performance. The mixture of wild madness and simmering intellect is fascinating.

They have to look good. My top 5 most played champs. Xayah: Cute. Sona: Boobs. Kayn: Sexy. "Edit* Very funny voice lines when in base form." Varus: Sexy (from the waist up) Rakan: Sexy (But cringe voice lines) [sg-jinx]

I'm a shallow old woman. [sg-miss-fortune]

At this point? Not being reworked or "upgraded".

I find the dark and "serious" champions appealing to me, or the straight up the "creepy" champions are really cool to me too. Thresh is a good example of a "creepy" champion, I love his personality, wish It was explored better in game. Others I like are Swain and Jhin for very similar reasons - visuals, expensive animations, lore, VO, gameplay, personality... And there are some light hearted champions I also like like Rakan and Lulu, but I mostly like them because of their personality, character and gameplay.

Shandrake1/18/2020, 7:59:29 AM5 votes

Jhin Everything about Jhin.

His lore, his VO, his kit... just the way he moves and acts.

I like badass champions like Sett and Mordekaiser They have one single goal and will do anything to achieve it But their actions and motives are completely different Sett does it for those he loves because of the people he hates Mordekaiser does it for himself because of his obsessions

Sett loves his mother and hates breaking her heart, thus he keeps his fighting career a secret, and hopes that one day he can get revenge on his father for abandoning his mother and him. His fists powered by sheer force of will and a big heart made him into what he is now. Quite a simple yet touching story that made me fall in love with the character. Meanwhile Mordekaiser was a man so motivated with victory and slaughter, thinking it might please the Gods and make them accept him as one of their own kind in the afterlife, but upon dying his disappointment of finding the afterlife being a bland wasteland of withering souls only pushed his ambitions further and made him into a god of death/underworld. Kind of a: "Fine. I'll do it myself" type of person. And boy did he do it himself. He not only became a god but built a kingdom using the very souls of the ones he kills.

My fav quotes from the 2: Sett : Love you ma, see ya tomorrow. Sett : Tell ma... they started it... Sett : A wise master once said: "Be like water"... Guess I'm kind of a tsunami. Mordekaiser : In the world beyond blackened ichor filled a crumbling sky, as souls withered to nothing, but I refused to fade. Mordekaiser : Enter the crucible of anguish. Mordekaiser : Enter and abandon hope.

A combination of Theme and playstyle/gameplay.

Mordekaiser is a great example of a champion that I love thematically and playing. He feels heavy, he feels powerful. It's wonderful, I've always liked the all-powerful evil overlord style of character and Mordekaiser wears it like a glove. Kayle is a champion that I've always secretly loved. The angel design always delighted me and her hypercarry potential pre-rework was great. Her rework drew me in further and I've stayed ever since.

Wrathof3001/18/2020, 9:07:16 AM5 votes

I main Pantheon and I 100% understand where you're coming from. Atreus is an amazingly compelling character, his determination and willpower greater than anyone else. I am glad Pantheon's rework did not turn him into a vengeful god-slaying berserker due to having his body possessed by the Aspect of War, but instead chose to focus on his innate character as someone who always gets back up when you knock them down, and that, this, is what makes him mortal.

Pantheon: "Vengeance is cold. I do not need it on the mountain." Pantheon: "It is not why I fight, but who I fight for."

Contrast with Aatrox who I actually love because he is a vengeful god-slaying berserker. Aatrox has an amazing VO, everything he says has some level of passion, deeper meaning or loathing behind it. He really sells the concept that the Darkin were once Shuriman Ascended. A lot of people mourned the lost of old Aatrox being a great tactician of war inspiring bloodlust into armies, but I look at it as, that version of him being his old Sunborn self and now he has fallen from grace and become Darkin. He makes some jokes in his interactions which people were also not fond of, but as I said before, I see it as remnants of his Ascended warrior persona pre-imprisonment.

Aatrox: "I touched the stars, and saw the glorious light of a thousand suns! Now, blinded by this elegance, how could my purpose be anything... but dark..."

Finally Rakan I love his personality and animations, the animations really sell his personality. He is annoying, yet annoyingly fun, he does a spin in his walk cycle that just feels right. His VO has a few deep lines, but not Aatrox and Pantheon tier in my opinion.

Wow that's a big question. Usually, I don't look for specific archetypes since I enjoy a wide range of different character types. Some of my favs in league include Ezreal Nunu Zed Evelynn Swain Warwick Mordekaiser Azir Illaoi Kled Poppy Kayle and now Sett .

Generally, I like characters that have a well developed theme but most importantly, I love it when their theme, design, and gameplay are consistent with eachother, creating a more immersive experience. When the champion you play as feels like they are supposed to feel, it's just that much more compelling.

I like Warwick for his lore and designs, so now I'm obsessed with drawing him. Currently have an unfinished digital paint on him.

Kalista Everything about her. Her voice lines. Her model. (I think she's one of the older champs who still looks so good that she won't need a VU soon) (Although I would like her to be in a more healthy state when it comes to her gameplay.)

My favourite lol story is "The Echoes Left Behind". It's so tragic for Kalista and Ledros... I still hope one day we will get back the non-"Spirit of Vengance" Kalista. Maybe if we ever get Ledros as a league champion. (Although idk what's up with the necklace now that Thresh's lantern broke. Did he go back just to get it back?)

Harleqynn1/18/2020, 5:15:34 PM3 votes

Honestly Fiora’s aristocraticly smug point of view “Submit- you have already lost,” Camille’s cold Mary Poppins’ demeanor “Humanity is not black or white...but a delicious shade of grey,” and Qiyana’s outright arrogance “I’m not arrogant- I’m right” just don’t show up in the real world and make them such fun characters... but also Sett has such a great character caught in the middle of loving his mom and punching people. “My momma don’t need to know anything about this...‘kay?” I could go on and on about Jhin and Akali and many more characters but am going to stop here. Have a great day!

Linna Excel1/18/2020, 4:11:18 PM3 votes

I main Sona, so I guess anime tiddy.

Seriously though, how a champ looks is how I notice them and on free weeks I'll give them a try to see how I like their kits.

Larriet1/18/2020, 7:11:53 PM3 votes

I like characters I admire as people. In other words, a character I aspire to be. Generally, that means some of the following: kind, generous, earnest, patient, noble, optimistic, energetic, honest, curious, and noble. Bonus points if they aren't sure of themselves, and they have to "grow up" in a way.

My FAVORITE characters are Lux Taliyah Orianna because they are all quite kind, and their kindness is an important aspect of their character development. Compare that to Soraka, who is probably the most overtly "good" character in the game, but doesn't exactly have a character arc.

Other characters I like, for one or more of the aspects above: Caitlyn Ashe Diana Leona Kayle Morgana Galio Janna Kaisa Karma Braum Lulu Nami Poppy Neeko Senna Zoe Nunu

I generally don't like characters with harsh personalities (Lucian, Diana, Kayle) but sometimes there are things about them that makes me like them better (I like Kayle and Morgana a lot as a pair). I also like pretty much all the characters in League because they're cool characters with interesting designs, but obviously I'm not gonna talk about ALL of them right here. I also don't think it's a coincidence that most of my favorite Champions are women; these types of characters don't get written as men nearly as frequently, which is kind of a shame. I hope we see more wholesome guys in the future.

ModAcademy Kayn1/18/2020, 1:44:29 PM3 votes

What really draws me to a character is their ability to be put into a school like environment and have a comic written about that one particular idea.

RyzeTheSmurfMage1/18/2020, 7:27:50 AM3 votes
  1. Their aesthethic
  2. Their theme, especially the old powerful and knowledgable archmage theme
  3. Their power set (I'm one of those people that are rly into power scaling and analisation of one's powers)
  4. Their overall character
BioticFlux1/20/2020, 3:13:25 PM3 votes

The most important aspect for me is a champion's lore. If I like their lore and the personality/character traits portrayed by it, I'll take the time to learn their kit. If I don't like their lore (and with extension their personality/character) then I generally have less interest in them.

Wrathful Chicken1/18/2020, 9:24:56 PM3 votes

When I get drawn into a character its usually for two reasons. The character is compelling or adorable.

So, the compelling part is what people usually expect when connecting to someone that is interesting. Some champions have quotes that really makes me reevaluate life. Braum Braum is a good example of this since his positivity is represented in both good times and bad times.

Braum "The darker the night, the brighter the stars."

Other champions are better represented in their lore to give insight into their motives. Darius Darius is one example of this as his in game personality is essentially just a meathead. Yet his lore shows how he has to confront some painful situations due to the ideal of strength. Viktor Viktor is another example of this as his story is formed much like a villain from Batman. His motives start completely genuine and for the aid of mankind, but bureaucracy and unfairness of having his works stolen from him has caused him to lose faith in humanity and rely on mechanical means.

Then there is the kawaii, uguu~, sugoi champions. [slayer-jinx-catface] [sg-kiko] [sg-lux] [sg-jinx] This doesn't necessarily only mean the cutesy types, though cutesy champions do fall under this. It's simply champions where some part of them makes me really happy.

  • Corny jokes. Zilean "Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like banana."
  • Very 乇乂ㄒ尺卂 Kled "CHHAAAAAARRGE!!"
  • Emote spams Garen "He- H- H- Hey- He- H- Hey- He- Hey look! I'm holding the wo- Hey- Hey-"

These kinds of champions are fun to play with, because they are hilarious. I look forward to playing them cause of the memes. It just makes me happy to play this Pillsbury Doughboy.

Iron Phantom1/18/2020, 11:01:06 PM2 votes

I tend to gravitate towards champions like Mordekaiser Aatrox Volibear

I just really like the aesthetic of those 3 champions, and all 3 are fun to play in my opinion.

Plus the voice of Mordekaiser is to die for, the second the announcer pack becomes purchasable for Mordekaiser it's an insta buy

Dearg Doom1/18/2020, 11:35:31 PM2 votes

Some I enjoy because they are fun to listen to while playing, especially if they have good quotes: Yorick Jhin Swain Other I just like their overall designs, or just plain like them in general: Veigar Xerath Bard

AFilthyCaitMain1/19/2020, 3:17:05 AM2 votes

Caitlyn Camille really appeal to me because the idea of mixing steampunk with high class but ALSO being deadly is just cool. Also their aesthetics are just uhg yes, Their voice acting is superb (for Caitlyn it's her pulsefire skin), and they're both just classy badasses. Vi is also cool because even though she has huge gauntlets, she can still beat people up without them. Didn't really feel much towards Vi till they gave her some lore love. Her sarcasm and brashness is also funny.

Im drawn to Illaoi because I don't think I've seen any character like her. she's so unique and cool.

I play Caitlyn, Camille, and Illaoi because their gameplay is also really satisfying in one way or another.

GreenLore1/19/2020, 8:34:30 PM2 votes

I'm usually drawn to champs with really outstanding and over-the top personalities and am generally a big fan of champs with more unique designs.

Elrond Peredhel1/22/2020, 10:56:55 AM2 votes

Literally every word uttered by Jhin.

But seriously, to this day Jhin has been the only champion to absolutely enrapture me upon my discovery of him. The teaser, his theme, the immaculate manner in which his character and playstyle mesh together so well. I truly believe Jhin to be a crowning jewel of Rito's character design, I have always felt that he is a canvas of infinite possibilities, this was proven with Dark Cosmic Jhin which imo is the best legendary skin ever made. Every. Single. Line he utters is so absolutely true to his original conception, but also different enough to be as an exotic dish, unique and tantalizing the senses, but with enough familiarity that it does not feel alien.

I am certainly biased in a way because I have always been drawn to the 'calculated psychopath/sociopath' type of characters, I always love exploring the depths of their madness, because it is as if you are looking into the mind of something human but also inhuman at the same time. What others see as horrid carnage, Jhin sees as the pinnacle of artistic beauty, this is the very part that draws me in. I am fascinated by the inner workings of these kinds of characters and I wish to understand how it is they see things so.

AuntRhody1/18/2020, 5:24:27 PM2 votes

The thing that draws me to champions if they look badass and sound badass. I main Darius, Kayn, and Yas and I was drawn to them by just there looks. Same with Sett, I plan on getting m7 with him because everything about him is fucking cool. his punching and body slamming immediately caught me.

HonestJohnTheCon1/18/2020, 6:26:32 PM2 votes

Kled

He's such an insane character that it's hilarious. Almost everything that comes out of his mouth is ridiculous.

"Was that you talkin'? Or was it the voices again?" "Mushroom juice is healthy. Once you get used to madness and the paranoia..." "Sure, invade Ionia, you said. It'll be fine, ya said. FINE, YA SAID!" "THE BADGERS COMMAND IT!"

Which makes it oddly nice when he says one of his more lucid lines, like this one:

"The sky's my roof, the open plains are my bed, and this lizard is the only company I need."

PinkPowerCoin1/18/2020, 6:31:09 PM2 votes

I really like a lot of champs, but a couple of examples:

Lux When I started back in season 3, I only really liked her because of her kit. Her play style was right up my alley. Poke them down until i think I can one shot. Plus she was a mage, and I LOVE magic/super powers. The lore back then (with the summoners and what-not) was meh. I liked her design (well, at least the splash art, the actual base model is still kinda garbo). Her personality from the voice lines was cute, and I liked that she had a brother in Garen. Seasons have come and gone and I only love her more. Her kit is still great, and her lore is 100000+% better. She's very much the archetype i like to play in RPGs. A powerful mage new to their abilities, with a naive and kind heart who just wants to help. Then she rebelled against not only her people (Demacia) but also her family to help her fellow mages who are being brutalized. She's your quintessential protagonist, and I love her. And the fact that she gets at least a little attention EVERY year is a bonus!

Taliyah On the flip side, Taliyah gets little to no love from Riot. But I still love her, even though I'm not the best on her lmao. Her design is amazing (reminds me of Avatar the Last Airbender). I like that she's not the stereotypical beauty that League likes to make their women (same face syndrome). Her lore is super interesting to me. Like Lux, a novice in her abilities, but goes under the tutelage of Yasuo to hone her skills. Her connection to Shurima, and the potential stories that can come from Azir's resurrection, and how she'll fit into that could be really interesting. Her voice lines are nice, I often catch myself saying some of them when i play her without thinking (THROW ANOTHER ROCK lol). She also has this voice line that implies she has a crush on Ekko and I low key ship it.

PaladinNO1/18/2020, 7:41:50 PM2 votes

"Fun gameplay." No brute force/hard engage/yolo stuff - just...fun. Being a Support main, I prefer champions with some protective ability, a disengage/hard cc and whatever offensive ability he/she needs to compliment the kit.

Some really cheesy emotes and in some way a funny voice also helps.

For me, Lulu fit all criteria. Ability wise, as does Nami. Bard, Soraka and Janna too to a certain extent.

Jinx One of my two favorite champions (the other being Urgot). Besides simply enjoying playing her, I love Jinx because on the surface she appears to be this manic, fun loving psychopath who possibly has a split personality. But if you dig deeper, you see she wasn't always like that, and had some horrible thing, or series of things, happen to drive her insane. So on the outside, she's fun and lovable (despite being a terrorist), but at the same time I feel sorry for the girl she once was. Can't wait for Arcane to see what really happen to her.

As for Urgot, I really like his aesthetic and find his philosophy to be interesting. Plus I think there could be tons of great in lore interactions between him and other champions.

Chromatic Eagle1/18/2020, 1:52:17 PM1 votes

Sylas I never thought that I would identify with him so much. At the least, sympathize. I believe that a lot of people can put themselves in his place: a person who is mistreated for reasons outside of your control. Despite your efforts to fit in, all it takes is one moment to have everyone turn against you.

hhaavviikk1/19/2020, 10:46:07 AM1 votes

90% gameplay and 10% visuals, lore/story is completely irrelevant to me, gameplay is almost the only thing that matters, visuals only 10% because I care allot about going into a war in attire that makes sense, tryndamere chest exposed, braum chest exposed, allot of female champions looking the same except for a halloween costume, leona wearing heels, allot of that nonsense annoys me but if the gameplay is good enough then I could look past it.
