Honestly I really don't understand it? Like yes he looks straight like hes out of an anime just like 80 % of the other characters in this game. Yes he has long emo hair like 80 % of the posters on this board does. The number 1 complaint i've read though is that he's an "Edgelord" Uhm does anyone on this board know what that even means? An Edgelord is literally someone on the internet who is super angsty and shit like that and usually thinks hes some tough shit. But in the game he IS tough shit, like it really just feels like people just want to bitch about anime looking characters for some reason. In game he doesn't even angst LOL. Like I just want actual concrete reasons why hes a bad character.

Those with high angst who wants to be tough. Kayn isn't one, but he garners the attraction of those who are.

Like those who see Demonblade Yasuo. They're legit the majority online. I've done enough "Vs" themed events to know that darkness and chaos always trumps light and order. It's so freaking unreal. Even if the light/order/good is objectively of higher quality, the other side will win because of edginess.

I've noticed that too. That's why is find Good vs Evil or Order vs Chaos themes boring, because they are so predictable. And I can't really blame the online community honestly, the White vs Black Morality trope is quite uninteresting overall. I'd much prefer to see a Gray vs Gray morality event. Such as Sejuani's Tribe vs Lissandra's Forces, Shadow Isles vs Chaos (i.e. Darkness vs Chaos), Void vs Noxus, Xerath and his minions vs Singed and other Zaunite scientists (i.e. Magic vs Natural Science but with a gray vs gray morality twist).

Also gray vs gray morality can work with the "good" factions aswell. The restricting faith of Demacia vs the more untamed nature of the Avarosan tribe, the Industrialism of Piltover vs the more innate magical nature of Ionia, Azir's honorable tyranny vs Nasus's wiser, more practical nature, etc.

These are events which I would look forward to.

Honestly I feel like Kayn on his own is kinda bland.

I mean if Rhaast was just a regular scythe,then what would make Kayn unique among the cast? Pretty much only the fact that he uses a scythe,which is tbh a rather weak theme.

However I have to say that Rhaast on his own isn't much better,without Kayn he'd come off as a regular demon(or more precisely darkin in this case),just with a scythe instead of a sword.Though I guess Rhaast is more liked than Kayn simply because Rhaast is such a deadpan snarker.He provides the more funny lines in their VO.

Together though?I think together they are actually well designed champ.

In kit, yes. But in personality, no. They're both bland and their trope has been done better in numerous other medias. They are just two generic, stale personalities crammed together. Overall, lackluster.

Overall I'd say that this is up to personal opinion. I think their interactions are interesting enough to make up for the fact that they aren't that interesting alone.

But thats just my personal opinion.

Granted, their interactions with each other help, but it turns listless mediocrity into barely passable. Then that all withers away once you pick Shadow Assassin or Darkin, because the opposite voice of whoever you didn't pick disappears.

I don't hate Kayn, but his entire... well, everything just sorta makes me want to roll my eyes.

The one redeeming part of the character is that his introduction means more Darkin lore, and lore makes me happy.

"Edgelord anti hero" is a character archetype that's been done to death and never had any potential to begin with. Nowadays it's best done ironically, which... this character doesn't do. I've been pining for a new humanoid character with some kind of special weapon for a good while now and we get this, which is just so absurd I can hardly believe this is a thing.

His quotes seem uninspired and the stripe in his hair looks fucking ridiculous. I know Anthony Birch works on the LoL design team but it's like he took over and made the design himself. Him and his old crew used to exclusively make characters that looked and acted almost exactly like this, and it's still embarassing to look at.

The problem is that some people for whatever reason think there is a difference between this guy's "there's a demon inside of me" and Sion's "I am a monster", because apparently the latter is good writing and the former is "anime" and bad writing.

Spoiler: The actors who play the ninjas in movies are obviously good looking, and are usually young, like pretty much any other movies. How a ninja with good face obviously means it's exclusively anime or whatever to you is just off, it's like saying a good looking swordsman is anime when it's you know, everywhere.

How is that not relevant is something that's also mind boggling, it's almost like there's problem putting two and two together. But anyway.

If they make a live-action league game mode then by all means... you get this point... but otherwise you just kinda wandered off to the side of this discussion and brought up something completely irrelevant to the discussion and then acted like it not only WAS relevant, but that it made your point somehow.

Disney is a western animation company and is far more well known than any anime studio. As we all obviously know... being larger makes you better and thus, anime is worse than western animation... if it wasn't then anime would be bigger because it would be more popular. Seeing how at least several other people also upvoted him I take it I'm not alone in thinking this. Take your aggression elsewhere :P it's not needed here.

You shouldn't bash things you don't understand, such as anime. It's as varied and diverse as American TV shows. It's a loosely collected style, or group of styles which are then used to convey all sorts of genres of storytelling.

Dragging anime and people who like anime through the mud in order to try to show how the champion sucks is like dragging classic literature through the mud to try to show how a character written in that style (even before it is settled that that character is derived from that style) is bad. It doesn't work.

Here was my ENTIRE point. Kayn seems to be an over the top anime edgelord. Specifically, he reminds me of the kind of shit you'd seen in Naruto or Bleach as a villain. Oversided weapon. Refusal to wear a shirt. Trained by a ninja master. Grinningly and unapologetically murderous. Seeking to "unlock his ~~Bankai~~ the power of his darkin weapon. Etc etc...

Now I personally freaking hate this archetype and didn't like those shows... so I dislike the new guy. More specifically, I love the idea of a fighter champion with a scythe, but was disappointed that THIS is what we got out of it.... because Riot sure as hell isn't gonna make another fighter with a scythe any time soon. This guy not only doesn't appeal to me, but he basically buried that cool concept too unless I wanna play the leering anime villain archetype.

So I express as much, calling Kayn an "anime edgelord" and stating that this is why I am disappointed with him... and BOOM. Dozens of people like the jerkoff I am arguing with float out of the woodwork to flame me and tell me that I am wrong (... with my opinion, somehow) that I am an idiot... that I am ignorant... that OBVIOUSLY since anime is always 110% awesome and every anime series is the greatest thing every made that me disliking him for being "anime" is proof that I have some sort of mental illness. The flamers only care that I don't like him and have been flaming me and "correcting" my "prejudiced opinion" or explaining to me what anime "really" is for days now.

So pardon me if I'm a tad salty and my responses by now have mostly turned into telling them to go @#$% themselves, but I have NEVER been flamed, harassed or abused so much over something as simple as my god damned opinion. People have acted like it is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE that I not like something because it reminds me of god-damned Bleach... a show that I hated and thought was dumb as all hell. Fuck, I don't even dislike anime in general... not that these jerkoffs have seemed to care. They like him so I deserve to be flamed and insulted for NOT liking him, or for feeling he'd have been cooler with a more gothic aesthetic.

And to top it all off... I'm the minority. The anime fan crowd is immense, so even if some relatively sane person happens by and reads things, they'll likely side with and coddle the jerks flaming me because they ALSO enjoy anime and listening to the wild, unfounded garbage these jerks have been accusing me of I am somehow an illiterate racist that hates everything asian and personally beats up poor, innocent anime fans and throws them down flights of stairs. Y'know... like you did.

And odds are you won't even care. Because I don't like something that you like I must DESERVE to be mocked, flamed, harassed and bullied. Ironic really, seeing as at least one of the people flaming me has flat out told me that he's being so aggressive because he got picked on in school for likeing anime and manga and "feels the need to defend himself"... as if me not liking the champ is a personal attack against him or something.

But whatever. I'm done. I don't care anymore. I'm tired of ranting at stubborn kids who will just keep making up ever more absurd shit to try and paint me as a cackling bully, a racist and a villain.... just because I don't enjoy something out of a freaking cartoon. And when I stop fighting they'll all cheer and smile and claim that they won... because they were able to harass me into submission... and they'll feel good and tell themselves they've won something and done something good, because they verbally abused someone into the fucking ground over a petty disagreement. And none of them will see the irony of it at all, or stop for even a second to think that maybe I'm a person or something. People overreacted to you, and they were unreasonable. However I think a lot of that could have been avoided if you had been clearer and calmer in expressing your point. Maybe I didn't see enough to properly understand the discussion, but from what I could tell you reacted to them with rage rather than with calm remarks or explanations.

And still is spewing out. And will CONTINUE to spew out. Believe it or not, I was pretty damned calm the first five or six posts of attempting to explain to this guy why flaming someone for their opinion is kinda dickish. But y'know... three days of "you don't like a video game character because you hate ASIAN PEOPLE!" and nonsensical rants about how "purple chocolate" and I just may be legally insane... and have been reacting as such.

It's not that people can't like the style of the new champ but if they're going to mention that they don't like it, then it shouldn't be for some nonsense reason, you know? Not saying you can't post that you don't have a proper explanation for something. Also as for your definition i'm sure you're not wrong but words change over time, considering the majority of people call characters like him, shadow the hedgehog, Reaper, etc edgy characters can follow and edgy theme and their definition is fine.

Why the boards don't love him idk, i guess his appearance is just too edgy compared to jhin who just acts like he's an edgelord on drugs. However as jhin words his BS in such a way it sounds philosophical people would love to get on their knees for him. He does have an overloaded kit tho.

And i mean his appearance srsly pushes me away from him, the whole discount sasuke animu edgelord thing kinda wore off on me. I DO like Reaper in overwatch for example, not like my favourite character but i do like his for of Edgy. And even going back to the anime example Sasuke is just an edgy lil bitch while itachi is certainly edgy but still cool.

Also saying 80% of the champs are anime thropes is a bit much. I think we're past the point where 80% here have long emo hair. The ones that are fine with kayn don't care, those who have complaints make themselves heard.

You can be shooting rainbows ingame, if your lore is edgy you are edgy. I your looks are this edgy tho, your lore won't even matter.

tldr Edge isn't bad if handled correctly and even then it's personal preference. Vocal minority, words' definitions change over time, lore/looks is/are often what defines a character.

I dont think he is bad, gameplay or art design, but im not gonna play him. I dont enjoy that as a theme that i want to explore. He is "edgy" in that "I am an assasian struggling with the soul of my weapon" Its in lots of things, not just eastern anime/manga. Ive never particually enjoyed it. you can explore the themes in other more stimulating ways in my opinion by making a good character forced to make blood decisions to save a greater good. Then they have to say themselves, am i becoming the monsters i hate ect. Have an acutally monster that trying to take your character over instead, isnt all that interesting to me

The "Edgelord" thing is a meme, but he is an Edgelord in lore, I can feel it. he's the kind of character gonna attack Shen and get styled on, and Zed's gonna be like "lul, told you so." I think he's a great addition, especially since there where ppl that wanted a Zed apprentice as a champion and those that wanted a scythe champ, 2 birds one stone.

Funny thing is: Back in the old forum, around season 3 or so, I actually made a champion concept with an ability that allowed you to walk through terrain, but instead of healing you, it got you a disadvantage so that you took more magic damage while you could walk through terrain...

Back then everyone called the ability stupidly broken and the thread was downvoted hard...

Now we get a champion who cant just walk through terrain, it als HEALS him...

My reason for disliking him is this. I'm not an anime fan.

BAM! Simple as that. I'm kinda not into all the anime shit that is all the fuck over this game. And that in and of itself isn't THAT bad... but I REALLY like the idea of a fighter-type hero who uses a Scythe. Scythes are fucking badass. In particular, I'd have loved to see a gothic-style character with a scythe... like something out of Bloodborne or Darkest Dungeon. I love that shit.

But because this animu douchebag has it, they're never gonna make that cool gothic champion I'd love to see. They're not gonna make a second scythe guy... so I've gotta play the anime edgelord weeb-bait dude or nothing. And that blows. I know all you guys love his ass, but to me he's a freakin' let down... because he took an idea I DID like, and turned it into something I have little to no interest in.

That is why I personally hate on the edgy son of a bitch. Well that and his personality is bland as all fuck.... but that's a pretty common issue with Riot's characters.
