I question the wisdom of spending so much effort on anime girls-

-when the actual Lore of the League universe is still so bare bones.

Half a dozen champions still exist in limbo as of the retcon for God's sake. Is anyone really more interested in this alt-universe stuff than getting concrete information on, say, Demacia? Or what has become of Bandle City since Riot totally altered Yordles? People still would have bought these skins one way or the other.

I have a simple answer for you. Here it goes:

These things are handled by different teams and different people. Star Guardians have no effect on the lore that's being worked on. It's that simple.

Weird.

Because as I understand it, art resources are a common bottleneck in the design process. Star Guardians certainly didn't eat up as much as, say, the the Project line did with its little movie, but this is non-negligible stuff. One way or the other, lore is being built around these alt-universe skin lines. 'n while we're on the topic of skin lines, when was the last time we got a skin that was actually connected to the story? Gangplank? More skins that tell us more about the game world wouldn't hurt.

And last I heard, the Foundations team is less their own thing and more of a collaborative unit that works with other teams to tie things together with the lore. Did we get word that Riot reorganized them again while I wasn't looking?

Actaully... I just realized this reading your statement. Where does riot get their money? Riot Points! So putting the extra effort into the skins to make them more desirable is a no brainer. Naturally they will come out with more lore in time, but it is more just for the fans, and doesn't actually get them any money what so ever. The Promotional Vid for the Project skins made me want to have them all. Without the video I can almost guarantee I wouldn't have bought any of them, except maybe Ekko. So it works.

Is there a point to that statement?

That doesn't change the fact that Riot, the company, is allocating resources to tell this alternate universe story when the main lore team need to do more work.

Riot could easily have more people working on the main lore than on this AU lore than they are now, but choose not to.

Now, I personally am not really bothered by this. I like the Star Guardian stuff. But your defense isn't a defense at all. It doesn't do anything to address the OP's point.

OP's point is why are skins getting more attention than lore, at least at its core from what I can see. And the point I'm making is that such things are worked on by different teams, to different schedules and with different goals. Why are skins getting embellished so heavily when the lore's suffering? These things aren't intrinsically linked such that the skins are taking from the lore's lifeblood.

It's like when people complain about getting skins when the game is unbalanced or servers are breaking down. The people who fix servers or do live balance don't also make skins, and neither do the people who write the lore. The teams are of course working such that they're aware of what each other is doing, so they'll adjust the schedule so that stuff gets its appropriate time in the spotlight, but it's not like the Riot executives go to the lore team and are like "Alright no lore stuff because we're making magical girls". Riot's divided in to teams and wings and shit who do various things and work on their own terms, and collaborate when they want to.

I'll tl;dr this statement: OP's question is flawed in itself by asking a question to which the answer is "that's not how it works".

It is. If Rito devotes more money to the skin team than the lore team the lore team will suffer, relatively speaking. That's how budget allocations work.

When people say "stop making skins when the game's balance is shit", what they are essentially saying is to put less money into skins and more into the balancing team.

There's also little money to actually be made with league's lore. At least that's how I see it.

Yes I would rather read about anime girls, then I would about the life of Twitch the sewer rat. Thanks for asking lol.

Skins = Money

Lore = No money = Unimportant

Its not like the narrative team just released a huge bunch of star guardian lore. Unless I missed something we pretty much only got "they are a bunch of highschoolers who are also magical girls and jinx is the rebel, janna is the veteran, poppy is the serious and lulu is the young one"

Ya but I totally wouldn't complain if they did release a bunch of lore... It actually seems pretty interesting.
