Let's be honest, Riot lore releases have been pretty rare in the last few years.

Sure, we've had the odd cool event (Bilgewater) but most of the lore players have received over the last few years have been unsatisfying retcons, lame lore.

We gotta fix that!

@Riot, I hate to be harsh here, but you are seemingly unable to productively steer lore in a direction that is desirable to a huge demographic of your fans.

@Riot, please, look to factions and what they are doing. Those people know how to produce lore one par season 1 RIot. We need that kind of skill.

@Riot, you may not like to admit this, but 3rd party people are producing better lore than you are (Factions). Do you know what the best solution is?

Make Factions Canon! Bring the people producing that awesome lore into your company, because they've proven they can produce lore better than you currently are!

Usual silence. My own thoughts are that Riven and Darius loved each other before the Ionian war. Riven then 'dies' leaving Darius distraught. Swain, who acknowledges Darius' depression is annoyed. When Riven is then revealed to be alive, Swain gets curious. Turns out that Boram Darkwill ordered Riven's death to give the position of poster girl to the Reborn Sion. This then leads to Swain's motivation to taking over Noxus.

I think that Factions is overrated because it's the only real 'faction' that is regularly producing potential lore material. Whether or not that lore is 'good' is up to the playerbase.
